...Quiet tonight, another shot for showers Thursday...
High Impact Weather Potential: Gusty winds develop across the
region Thursday bringing gale headlines, high swim risks and some
coastal flooding.
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Broad troughing remains across the
northern Plains and Great Lakes. Embedded short-wave trough and
attendant surface low continues to roll through eastern Ontario
with breezy westerly flow in place across northern Michigan.
Morning stratus finally managed to mix into a SCT cu deck across
the region giving lots of sunshine to most areas. Cu is a bit
bubbly across interior eastern Upper Michigan and there were a few
blips on radar up that way a bit ago. But no bonafide showers as
far as I can tell. Upstream, another strong short-wave impulse is
diving through SE Alberta...tomorrows weather maker.
Low amplitude short-wave ridging and surface high pressure will
build through the region tonight. Remaining cloud cover out there
will fade this evening while gustiness subsides as well, leaving a
relatively quiet and overall mild night. Meanwhile, upstream
short-wave impulse will dig down through the northern Plains
tonight become negatively tilted and swing back through the
northern Great Lakes on Thursday. Respectable surface low pressure
spins up over the northern Plains and continues to deepen while
crossing northern Lake Superior/southern Ontario on Thursday,
driving a cold front through the region. This will bring some
showers, but more impactful, gusty winds.
Primary Forecast Concerns: Wind potential on Thursday.
Details: Overall quiet night anticipated. We lose the remaining
cloud cover heading into the evening hours and ongoing gustiness.
Wind gusts today have at times pushed the boundaries of High swim
risk in a few Lake Michigan locations and even flirted with gale
gusts. But those will subside this evening. Temperatures tonight
fall back through the 50s.
Higher impact weather arrives Thursday. As mentioned, strong
short-wave energy and a wrapped up, deepening/occluding surface
low pressure will cross northern Lake Superior Thursday morning an
into eastern Ontario, driving a cold front across the forecast
area by mid afternoon or so. Compact line of showers will accompany
the front...also swinging across the region through mid to late
afternoon with some trailing showers possible into Thursday
evening. A very narrow corridor of instability ahead of the front
could bring a thunderstorm or two, particularly across NE Lower
Michigan in the afternoon ahead of the front. But we remain in
just general thunder at this juncture.
Wind potential: Bigger impact part of this system will be the
winds, particularly on the marine side of things. Very strong axis
of low level winds is expected to develop ahead and along the
front Thursday morning, although most of that will not mix into
the more stable surface layer. But after FROPA, 30 to 40+ knot
winds aloft will readily mix into boundary layer and bring a
period of gusty winds...late morning and through the afternoon,
particularly across the northern half of the CWA and off Lake
Superior. Don't think winds will be strong enough for any land
based headlines. But gale force gusts are a good bet for
Whitefish Bay and the Lake Michigan nearshore areas, and probably
into northern Lake Huron. This will also create hazardous beach
conditions on Lake Michigan beaches and possibly some lakeshore
flooding issues into Little Traverse Bay. Plan to hoist headlines
covering all those concerns shortly.

Main Forecast Concerns...Wind speeds into Thursday evening.
The region will be on the southern edge of a deep trough centered
across north central and northeast Canada through Friday night. This
trough will then slowly lift out to the north Saturday. Disturbances
moving through the trough will bring small chances for a few showers
or sprinkles Friday (mainly north) but rising heights should lead to
precipitation free conditions Saturday. Models continue to advertise
950 mb winds of 25 to 30 knots into Thursday evening so with cold
air advection ongoing we should continue with gusty winds Thursday
night followed by breezing conditions Friday. Much cooler Friday
with highs in the mid 60s to low 70s. Temperatures rebound some
Saturday with highs in the upper 60s to mid 70s. Lows Thursday night
in the cooler upper 40s to low 50s then the chilly mid and upper 40s
Saturday night.

Main Forecast Concerns...Pops and the timing of the cool air.
A fairly fast zonal flow aloft this weekend is expected to give way
to a possibly robust long wave trough at some point next week.
Extended models unfortunately have large disagreements on when
exactly this will happen and how deep the trough will be. 850 mb
temperatures are nearly 15 degrees C different for Monday and
Tuesday with the ECMWF the warmer model. This will make for a very
difficult temperature and rain forecast starting Monday on into mid-
week. In the meantime, all models have some semblance of a short
wave moving through on Sunday which will lead to chances for
showers. All bets are off after that with anywhere from very warm
and humid conditions to cool and rainy conditions possible for Labor
Day on into Tuesday. The cooler air and showers should eventually
arrive by mid-week either way. Stay tuned to later forecasts when
models hopefully come into better agreement so we can sort out the
details.

VFR weather has returned to northern Lower Michigan with some
lingering SCT lower clouds still out there. Skies will clear out
in earnest heading into evening. Gusty westerly winds this
afternoon calm heading into the evening as well.
Thursday, another storm system will roll out of the northern
Plains and cross the northern Great Lakes, driving a cold front
through the region. Expect another round of showers and to move
through the region Thursday morning along with a brief lowering in
CIGS.
In addition, very strong winds develop just off the surface late
tonight/early Thursday and may lead to LLWS conditions through
Thursday morning prior to the passage of the front. Very gusty
winds develop behind the front Thursday afternoon with gusts of 30
to 40 knots likely.

Gustier westerly winds this afternoon will diminish heading into
the evening. But another storm system will roll out of the
northern Plains and across the northern lakes region on Thursday
driving a cold front through the region. This brings increasing/gusty
SSW winds to the lakes ahead of the front late tonight into early
Thursday morning. But after the front passes, winds turn into the
west with gusts of 30 to 40 knots likely from late morning onward,
particularly on Michigan Lake Michigan nearshores, Whitefish Bay
and the northern Lake Huron nearshore areas. Thus plan on
hoisting a gale warning for the above nearshore areas for
Thursday.
