High impact weather potential: Minimal through the near term. May
make a run at elevated fire danger conditions Tuesday afternoon.

Pattern synopsis/forecast:

Subtropical heat dome continues to expand north and east into the
Great Lakes...spurred along by upper level height rises ahead of
unseasonably strong trough digging steadily east across the
Intermountain West and latent heat release from now Tropical
Depression "Cristobal" moving north through the lower Mississippi
Valley. Those increasing mid level heights have now forced
instabilty gradient and moisture convergence driven showers and
storms well off to our north, with even mid and upper level moisture
thinning out as evident by mostly sunny skies across the Northwoods
early this afternoon. That abundant sunshine and maturing southerly
flow on backside of retreating surface high helping temperatures
warm well into the 70s and lower 80s for most areas. Of course,
readings are a bit cooler closer to the big waters.

Upper level ridge centers itself directly overhead tonight into
Tuesday as remnants of "Cristobal" continue to race north...reaching
vicinity eastern Iowa/northeast Illinois by Tuesday evening.
Intermountain West trough keeps moving right along, emerging into
the Central Plains on Tuesday. Base of this trough deepens and
becomes negatively tilted with time, eventually driving up through
the Great Lakes later this week. Combination of "Cristobal" and this
increasingly impressive shortwave are setting the stage for a period
of very active weather just beyond this near term period (read all
about those details in the short term section to follow).

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: Temperature trends through
Tuesday.

Details:

Dry and increasingly warm conditions expected through Tuesday as
earlier mentioned ridge axis and attendant deep layer subsidence
dominate northern Michigan weather. Mostly clear skies through
tonight does give way to increasing clouds later Tuesday as remnants
of "Cristobal" approach...with any showers/storms holding off until
Tuesday evening. Maintenance of light southerly flow and a quickly
modifying overhead airmass will keep temperatures tonight pretty
mild, with readings only dropping into the 50s and lower 60s. How
warm it actually gets Tuesday remains a bit of a quandary. While
overall mixing depths remain shallow...roughly to H8
level...temperatures at the top of that layer around 20C support
inherited highs in the upper 80s into the lower 90s across interior
areas of northern lower Michigan (perhaps even a few degrees warmer
yet in favored southeast downslope areas...looking at you Traverse
City). Currently believe any increasing high clouds will arrive late
enough and remain thin enough to realize this full warming
potential. Of course, if clouds arrive quicker and are thicker than
currently anticipated, readings will remain at least few degrees
cooler. The warmer end of the spectrum does put a few June 9th high
temperature records in jeopardy. For reference, a handful of June
9th records: 89 at GLR (2005), 90 at HTL (2005), 88 at ANJ (1959),
89 at PLN (2005) and 94 at TVC (1976).

.SHORT TERM...(Tuesday night through Thursday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Extratropical remnants of Cristobal
bringing strong winds, locally heavy rainfall, and potential severe
weather across northern MI

Pattern Synopsis:

The first of two shortwaves will being across the the Midwest into
the Great Lakes at the start of the period as the extratropical
remnants of Cristobal are expected to be located near the WI/IL
border late Tuesday evening, per the latest NHC forecast.
Extratropical Cristobal is expected to ride NE along the western
side of Lake Michigan and into southern Canada into Wednesday
morning as a secondary cyclone develops behind it in the Midwest
underneath very strong forcing aloft provided by a robust shortwave -
a very impressive one for this time of year, to add. This second
cyclone is expected to follow a very similar path through
Wednesday while it continues to deepen and the shortwave ejects
overhead. These system are expected to vacate northern MI by the
end of the period.

Forecast Details/Impacts:

This expected "1-2 punch" from these two separate cyclones spawned
from complex dynamic interactions will bring several threats to
northern MI Tuesday night through Wednesday night: Strong winds,
locally heavy rainfall, and severe weather potential. A modest
amount of uncertainty still exists with the evolution of these
threats, which prevents the use of stronger wording at this time. A
detailed discussion of the threats and impacts is below:

*Strong wind gusts

Strong wind gusts are expected to impact northern MI and the
surrounding nearshore waters Tuesday night through Wednesday night.
Wind gusts of 40+ mph are possible, especially over the water. This
certainly raises concerns along the lakeshores of the area as these
strong winds could lead to lakeshore flooding, beach erosion, and
what will likely be the first high swim risk of the year. Should
higher-end wind gusts materialize over land, scattered power outages
and some downed tree limbs would be possible.

*Locally heavy rainfall

Locally heavy rainfall is possible across northern MI Tuesday night
through Wednesday. While the axis of heaviest, widespread rainfall
is expected to be west of Lake Michigan, heavy rain potential across
the area will come from multiple rounds of rain/convection over
localized areas. The remnants of Cristobal will bring a tropical-
like airmass into the Great Lakes that looks to be characterized by
PWAT values nearing 2" Tuesday night into Wednesday. This would be
incredibly impressive moisture and would rival some climatological
records for observed soundings in the area, regardless of time of
year. This amount of moisture present will lead to extremely
efficient rainfall that could fall in large amounts rapidly, even
though rain/storms . Given antecedent soil conditions and rainfall
thus far, flash flooding concerns are certainly there should any
area experience multiple rounds of convection.

*Severe thunderstorm potential

This portion of the forecast consists of the most uncertainty due to
the complexities in evolution and timing. To put it honestly, there
may be a strong dichotomy between how the event could play out - even
though it's only about 30 hours away. Of first concern is convection
moving northward into the forecast area Tuesday near sunset/after
dark. The warm front is expected to move through during this time,
and a major and perhaps the main question of the forecast - will be
the convective evolution of any storms behind this front and their
propensity to be surface-based in nature. Surface-based thunderstorms
are not anticipated overnight do to potential cooling behind a first
round of precipitation and low to zero instability. However...should
surface-based storms materialize into the overnight hours,
especially if they can remain semi-discrete, the chance for
tornadoes would exist overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. It is
important to re-emphasize that this is NOT the expected/most
confident solution. However, storms would be in an environment
characterized by astounding wind profiles - 40+ kts of 0-1 km bulk
shear and 300-400+ m2/s2 of 0-1 SRH - which would be incredibly rare
parameter space in the context of severe weather. The main limiting
factors here are instability - less than 500 MLCAPE - and any
convective inhibition present.

A second round of severe potential exists Wednesday as the cold
front moves through during the day. More instability is expected as
slightly steeper lapse rates are anticipated to be advected into the
area. This could bump MLCAPE above 1,000 J/kg ahead of the front in
the presence of strong shear. While hodographs are less impressive
than overnight due to nearly unidirectional southerly flow, large
amounts of low-level shear are still present. Once again,
uncertainty in severe weather Tuesday night and Wednesday remains
high, but is being closely monitored for any increases in confidence
and likelihood.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Low for now.

Broad upper-level troughing will encompass much of eastern Canada
and the norther Great Lakes heading into the weekend as the remnants
of Cristobal quickly depart the James Bay area toward the Labrador
Sea by Saturday. High pressure quickly moves in behind, building
underneath favorable subsidence aloft as amplified ridging slides
across the Great Plains over the weekend. Relatively weak northerly
winds across the region will help keep us dry through the weekend -
from both a humidity and precipitation stand point. While some
embedded, weak shortwaves/speed maxima may rotate through the main
flow, rain chances are expected to remain low heading into next
week. The aforementioned northerly winds will also keep high
temperatures below normal heading into the weekend. Highs in the low
to mid 60s are expected Friday and Saturday, which would be about 5-
10 degrees below seasonal averages. Temperatures across the area are
expected to warm back up into the mid 70s by early next week.

across Northern Michigan thru Tuesday...before the remnants of
Cristobal begin to impact our area Tuesday night. All Northern
Lower Michigan TAF sites will continue to see solid VFR conditions
for the next 24 hours...with increasing chances of precip holding
off until after 00Z Wednesday. LLWS will develop across far
Northern Lower Michigan overnight (PLN). Surface winds will be
light/variable tonight...becoming SE around 10 kts on Tuesday...
with some higher gusts possible late in the day.

Quiet conditions expected to continue through the daylight hours of
Tuesday, with increasingly warm conditions and both winds/waves
remaining below advisory criteria. Conditions expected to change

with strong system ejecting out of the Rockies/Plains. An abnormally
deep early summertime low pressure system is still anticipated to
ride up through the western lakes region Tuesday night through
Wednesday bringing gale force gust possibilities, especially across
northern Lake Michigan. Trends support gusty winds (producing at
least small craft advisory conditions) persisting through
Thursday.
