High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal through the near term.
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Overnight composite analysis reveals a
pseudo split flow across the western/central CONUS, downstream from
sharp ridging in the eastern Pacific. Northern stream energy is
digging into the northern Rockies and a secondary piece of energy
sliding across Ontario. Strong southern stream wave is moving
through northern Mexico into Texas. Weaker surface low is across
eastern Ontario with a boundary the extends down through the
western U.P. into the central Plains to stronger organizing low
pressure in western Kansas. Strong theta-e advection is already
organizing from the Gulf coast up into the lower lakes ahead of
the boundary, with several pockets of showers/thunder ongoing...
closest of which is sliding across southern Lower Michigan/Indiana/
Ohio. But there is also a thin axis of mid level f-gen across
Wisconsin into northern Lower Michigan that has/is producing
isolated pockets of light rain/sprinkles
Large scale pattern amplification still on track to unfold across
much of the CONUS over the next 24 to 36 hours as northern/southern
stream wave phasing and attending strong surface cyclogenesis
takes shape essentially across the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley region
later tonight through Monday.
Primary Forecast Concerns: Increasing precip chances and timing
through tonight.
Details: Rain chances for a good part of the day don't look all
that promising as pocket of stronger forcing/steadier precip
slides by to our south this morning. NAM/GFS forecast
soundings/model RH guidance appear fairly overdone with their
ideas of saturated low levels and even some drizzle potential this
morning; evidenced by persistent VFR conditions across most of
the Great Lakes currently...unless things change in a hurry over
the next few hours. HRRR sounding moisture profiles appear to have
better handle in that regard. That said, weak-ish f-gen axis
extending out of Wisconsin into northern Michigan might continue
to produce some spotty light rain/sprinkles over the next several
hours. But I have cut back precip chances a bit for this morning
and into the afternoon hours.
Things change in a hurry later this afternoon and tonight as
northern/southern stream phasing and strong surface cyclogenesis
ramps up across the Midwest and into the western Great
Lakes...and a rapidly deepening surface low tracking into
northern Michigan by Monday morning. Impressively strong axis of
f-gen forcing along elevated boundary...coupled with strong upper
jet support is still expected to develop from Iowa through
Wisconsin and into eastern Upper Michigan heading into this
evening...bringing an expanding area of widespread precip pivoting
up into the region this evening and persisting throughout the
night. Precip coverage across northern Lower Michigan may be a bit
more scattered/showery in nature in the early going but should
fill in nicely overnight as phasing/deepening system pivots up
into the region.
At this point, precip type across the CWA should be all liquid
through the night, save for a brief period of rain/snow in
western Chip/Mack counties early this evening before warm air
surges into the region in earnest.

to Possibly Damaging Winds along with Lakeshore Flooding.
Forecast Concerns...Details of our strong storm system including how
high the wind gusts will be, when rain changes over to snow and snow
accumulations.
Models have come into fairly good agreement that the surface low
passes over far northwest lower Michigan at about 12z Monday.
However, the surface low is not quite as deep as previously shown
with around 986 mb the consensus surface pressure at that point. The
primary concern with this system will be strong to possibly damaging
wind gusts (isolated power outages?) in the 40 to 50 mph range. Will
continue with the high wind watch already in effect but start it a
little earlier (Monday morning) and continue it into Monday evening.
Cold air will rush into the region behind the surface low and models
have come into decent agreement that there will not be a lot of wrap
around moisture behind it. However, as temperatures quickly fall
late in the morning into early afternoon, rain should quickly turn
over to a period of snow in most spots. WPC probabilistic guidance
has dropped 4 inches or more of accumulation into the 30 to 40
percent range but it's still in the likely range for 1 to 2 inches
across northwest lower and around 2 inches across western portions
of Chippewa and Mackinac counties in eastern upper with less than an
inch elsewhere. Even a small amount of snow in combination with the
expected gusty winds would lower visibility as well as cause some
drifting. It turns cold enough Monday night for westerly flow lake
effect snow showers with drier air likely diminishing activity
Tuesday. Additional accumulations at this point are expected to be
generally in the inch or less range (perhaps locally higher
amounts?). Temperatures falling into and through the 30s Monday with
highs Tuesday in the mid and upper 30s. Lows Monday night mainly in
the 20s.

High Impact Weather...None is expected.
The unseasonably cold air will hang around through Thursday morning
with a slow modification thereafter. A short wave moving through the
flow will lead to snow shower chances Wednesday. Not a whole lot
going on weather wise after that as the flow aloft turns more zonal.
Highs Wednesday in the mid 30s to around 40, the upper 30s to low
40s Thursday, the low and mid 40s Friday then the mid 40s to low 50s
Saturday.

over the next 24 hours...reaching Northern Lower Michigan by late

Northern Lower Michigan by early Sunday morning. VFR conditions
will deteriorate to MVFR and eventually IFR as rain develops and
