High Impact Weather Potential...Moderate.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Lakeshore flooding along portions of
the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron shorelines. Snow shower coverage
and accumulation through tonight.

A cold upper level trough moves across the area today into early
tonight leading to continued steady cold air advection. Subsequent
decent mid level instability (mean 700-500 mb lapse rates about 7
C/km) is expected to kick off scattered to numerous showers,
mainly in the form of snow. Could even see brief snow accumulations
on grassy surfaces today but this will likely be limited by the
strong incoming April insolation (solar radiation). There will be
a better chance for light snow accumulations of up to around an
inch tonight, especially across the higher terrain of northwest
lower. It will even become cold enough for northwest flow lake
effect to kick in later tonight as well. Deep layer mixing will
lead to wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph from later this morning into
tonight. Lakeshore flooding is likely downwind of portions of Lake
Michigan and Lake Huron. Highs today will only be in the upper
30s and lower 40s (which will be hard to take after highs in the
50s to lower 60s yesterday). Lows tonight in the chilly mid to
upper 20s. The gusty winds will make it feel even colder with
apparent temperatures only in the 20s today and the teens tonight.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday through Saturday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Minimal.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast and possible outcomes...850 mb
temperatures fall to around -10c and it remains that way in NW Lower
through about 21z/Fri when the 1000-850 mb layer wind ridge begins
to move in and the 850 mb temperatures start to warm, and the
instability lessens. So will have some small chances for snow/rain
after 12z/Friday but will keep them mainly along our ridge line in
NW Lower where the orographic lift tends to enhance our
precipitation. High pressure then takes over Friday night, and into
much of Saturday keeping the region dry. Saturday night we begin to
see the clouds increasing and the rain begin to move out of the
southwest, and across the forecast area overnight. The warm front
looks to warm things up overnight, so will expect light rain over
the region as things move in.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Wednesday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Monday may have accumulating
snow, but there is uncertainty with the model tracks.

Extended (Sunday through Wednesday)...The models are in better
agreement with this system tonight. The sfc lows are  on roughly the
same track, but there are some minor differences. However, looking
at the details, the warm air (850mb temperatures >0c) moves north
and wraps back into E Upper through 12z/Monday so will expect that
rain/drizzle will continue to be the main p-type. Monday, the models
agree with the 500 mb low dropping into E Lake Superior, and pushing
the colder air, and moisture over the forecast area. Models
soundings show that we should transition from rain to snow through
afternoon and at night. If this is right, then there could be
some significant amounts (plowable?) of snow with the LES going
into Tuesday morning. The models are kind of all over the place
with the wind directions, but we will continue the LES into
Wednesday night.

Rain showers temporarily ending overnight in the wake of the cold
front that passed thru our region during the evening. NW winds
will strengthen to 20 to 30 kts on Thursday with higher gusts
expected. The arrival of colder air combined with deep cyclonic
flow and plenty of wrap-around moisture behind the cold front
will kick off scattered rain and snow showers on Thursday.

Deep low pressure passing by to our north and the attendant
surge of cold air aloft will combine to increase wind speeds
substantially across the big waters today into tonight.
Increasing over-water instability will help bring some of the
stronger winds aloft to the surface, supporting frequent northwest
wind gusts in excess of 30 knots. A few gale force wind gusts are
expected across portions of the three big lakes from later this
morning through early Friday morning. Winds will remain gusty
Friday but slowly diminish through the day.

northern Great Lakes early next week. This system has the
