...Rain with some thunderstorms late today and tonight...

High Impact Weather Potential: Heavy rain at times late today/
tonight. Embedded t-storms, especially toward/after midnight. Rain
will start to turn to snow late tonight. Becoming windy toward
dawn.

A weak (1016mb) low pressure system is moving up the OH Valley, with
associated precip to our south and east. In its wake, low and mid
clouds have been thinning, especially in ne lower and eastern upper
MI. However, warm and moist air is advancing northward in the MS
Valley, with 60f+ dew point air in southern MO and se KS. Low
pressure will consolidate in the lee of the central Rockies early
today, then rapidly eject ne-ward, crossing northern MI overnight.
This ne-ward acceleration occurs due to phasing between an ejecting
piece of energy from the western US upper low, and a sharp shortwave
digging across s central Canada tonight.

Pretty quiet out there now, and the 1st half of the day should stay
that way. Deeper moisture will only just be edging toward the area
from the w and especially sw. This afternoon, an 850mb warm front
lifts into the southern lakes. Sw 850mb winds behind this front are
50-60kt. This will ramp up warm/moist advection and ascent this
afternoon, though the real surge arrives this evening. Some initial
rain showers will push into nw lower MI and eastern upper MI toward
mid and late afternoon. Heavier showers should reach eastern upper
and the nw lower coast in the 6-8pm window, and expand eastward thru
the evening. Dry slotting may reduce coverage in parts of northern
lower MI toward midnight, but redevelopment is expected overnight
along the trailing surface cold front and arrival of strong height
falls aloft. Thunder is possible in southern sections late this
afternoon/early this evening, as differential temp advection drives
a weakening area of instability north into central lower MI. A
better chance for thunder is toward and after midnight, as lapse
rates rapidly steepen with cooling temps aloft. MuCape values of
about 500j/kg are possible. This instability will not be surface
based, and appears unlikely to result in a svr threat. But 0-6km
bulk shear values are over 60kt, so if we can get enough
instability, some small hail and gusty winds may be possible.

Total rainfall amounts will average 0.5-1.0", but some higher totals
are likely where stronger convective elements can persist
(especially tonight).

P-type is not an issue (just rain) until late tonight, when cold
advection blasts in from the nw. The changeover to snow arrives in
parts of eastern upper MI toward 4-5am, and will envelop all of
eastern upper and parts of nw/n central lower by 8am. Wonder if
there might be a window for some freezing precip (light rain/
drizzle) in eastern upper MI at the very beginning of the cold
push, with some hints of drying aloft at that time (though the
better dry slot is south of the bridge). Models are hinting at the
possibility, as they did in a recent event that panned out. Snow
accums will be less than an inch.

Se surface winds today will become breezy this afternoon, especially
near the lakeshores. Those winds go variable in space and time as
the low goes overhead by late evening/early overnight. Winds ramp up
again very late tonight, with some 30-35mph gusts possible along the
Lake MI/Superior coasts by daybreak.

Max temps today from the lower 40s in eastern upper to the lower 50s
down by Gladwin. Temps will hold up thru the evening and early
overnight, before crashing down late. Min temps tonight in the 20s
in eastern upper, 30s to lower 40s in northern lower MI.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday through Saturday)

High impact weather potential: Lingering lake effect snow
showers Friday, along with gusty northwest winds likely leading to
another round of lakeshore flooding concerns.

Pattern synopsis/forecast: By Friday morning, today's strong low
pressure is expected to be centered over eastern Ontario continuing
to progress northeastward into Quebec throughout the day. The
system's attendant cold front is expected to have cleared the
entirety of the forecast area with strong cold air advection
underway. As a result, falling H8 temps will promote a continuation
of precip chances (mainly snow), most numerously downwind of Lake
Superior and Michigan before lingering deep synoptic moisture
strips away through the midday and afternoon hours, ultimately
yielding a diminishing trend to ongoing lake effect activity into
Friday evening. In addition, northwest winds will ramp up behind the
frontal passage - likely leading to another round of increased
lakeshore flooding concerns across portions of the northwest lower
Michigan coast.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: Lake effect snow chances and
amounts, along with gusty wind potential Friday.

By early Friday morning, increasingly gusty northwest winds are
expected to dominate as a transition to CAA is expected on the
backside of the system as it departs well northeast of northern MI.
H8 temps are progged to fall into the low-mid teens below
zero...enough to drum up a lake response off of both Lake Superior &
Michigan by Friday morning into the daytime hours. Initially
favorable lake effect parameters quickly diminish with the loss of
background synoptic moisture, a sinking inversion height to sub-4kft
and strong winds through the boundary layer likely to shred any
dendrites. As a result, snow totals through the day Friday in
favored WNW/NW flow snow belts look to be rather minimal...perhaps
up to two inches in a few spots across eastern upper/an inch or less
for northwest lower. However, there's certainly the possibility of
some slick roads given the rapidly cooling temperatures/wet roads,
falling snow, along with reduced visibilities at times. Have
extended localized low end PoPs across parts of eastern upper and
northwest lower into Friday evening just given that there still
should be ample over-lake instability (despite a dearth of moisture)
and the fact that we often see lingering light snow showers continue
later than guidance progs.

As was alluded to above, northwest winds will ramp up considerably
Friday morning behind the exiting cold front. Sustained 10-20 mph
with gusts 30-35 mph (gusts to around 40 near the lakeshores) will
likely lead to another round of lakeshore flood concerns on many
Lake Michigan beaches of northwest lower Michigan.

Conditions become more tranquil Friday night into Saturday as an
expansive area of high pressure encroaches on the region from the
west. However, given continued over-lake instability, wouldn't be
surprised to see a few flurries or very light snow showers dot the
map from time to time. Not foreseeing that to be widespread and with
little confidence in spatial/temporal resolution, have opted to keep
it out of the forecast at this time.

Early day high temperatures will gradually fall into the 20s for
most locations by Friday afternoon. Not much of a rebound
anticipated Saturday with highs struggle to reach much above
freezing across all of northern Michigan.

High impact weather potential: Minimal.

Continued tranquil conditions  are expected across northern Michigan
to wrap up the upcoming weekend as high pressure centered to our
north continues to make its effects felt locally. Early next week
brings additional chances for light precip (thanks to a series of
waves moving through northern stream flow), however much spatial and
temporal uncertainty in current guidance. Beyond Monday, latest
trends suggest an area of low pressure slides east across the mid-MS
Valley into the Ohio Valley...perhaps skirting parts of northern
Michigan with a round of steadier precip. Worth keeping an eye on
that one, but plenty of time to monitor as we head into next week.
