.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

Impactful weather: Minimal. Rain arriving late this afternoon, and
evening.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

A shortwave trough was digging into the North Central Plains early
this morning, while sfc low pressure extended from Manitoba down
through the Plains. Moisture was rather limited at this time ahead
of this system, but the combination of DPVA, WAA and nrn and srn
stream upper jet divergence, has resulted in areas of rain across
MT/Dakotas, down through the Plains. There was a weaker shortwave
running into nrn Lake Superior, along a quasi-stationary frontal
boundary. There were some weak reflectivities across upper Michigan,
but the main batch of precipitation was in Ontario and Lake
Superior. This wave was only bringing some increased higher level
cloud to nrn Michigan, over the top of stratus, which was trapped
underneath a strong low level inversion. These clouds, along with
strengthening southerly winds just off the sfc, are keeping
temperatures fairly mild tonight. Readings were doing a good job
holding in the low to mid 30s.

The weaker shortwave trough near Lake Superior will pivot NE and
lift through eastern Ontario today, taking a deeper wedge of
moisture and associated precipitation mostly north of us. That said,
there is a chance that some light rain/snow or sprinkles/flurries
could scrape western portions of Chip/Mack counties of eastern
upper this morning.

The main feature will be the aforementioned stronger wave currently
well upstream. This wave will continue to carve it's way down
through the Plains and mid/upper Mississippi valley, before becoming
negatively-tilted and closing off as it blows through us tonight.
Forcing really increases late this afternoon and this evening, with
an impressive punch of DPVA/upper divergence and WAA. The strongest
of the forcing will be to our north, but confidence is pretty good
that a band of fairly widespread rain associated with a cold or
occluded front sweeps across all of nrn Michigan. The best chance
for this rain will be during the evening hours tonight. Behind the
front, H8 temperatures drop to -8C south and -12C north, but likely
not cold enough to spark any sort of lake effect.

Highs will be milder in WAA and increasing southerly winds. Readings
will range from the low to mid 40s in eastern upper, to the upper
40s and lower 50s in nrn lower. Lows tonight behind the cold front
will eventually get into the lower half of the 30s for most areas.
. Lows tonight will range from the upper teens in eastern upper, to
the mid and upper 20s in the GTV Bay region, and along the M-55
corridor.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday through Saturday)

High impact weather potential: Minimal, although a bit of light lake
effect possible early Friday.

Pattern synopsis/forecast: By early Friday morning, vertically
stacked low pressure that brings unsettled weather to the region
today is expected to be situated near the southern tip of James Bay
gradually pressing northeastward into Quebec early this weekend.
Locally, cooler weather is expected to be drawn in on the back side
of this departing system with the potential for a bit of lingering
light lake effect snow showers/flurries Friday morning, despite
marginal remaining synoptic support and thermal profiles. However,
expansive Canadian high pressure is expected to ooze into the region
from the northwest Friday night through the upcoming weekend aiding
to bring much drier deep layer air and little in the way of sensible
weather through this time frame.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: Lingering snow showers
possible early Friday, especially across eastern upper.

Relatively speaking, quieter weather returns by Friday morning
across the bulk of northern Michigan, although eastward progression
of aforementioned stacked low pressure slows considerably with at
least eastern upper remaining in pockets of deeper moisture rotating
around its southern periphery. Given cold temps are progged to
return through this time frame (H8 temps falling into the low teens
below zero), it's conceivable that some light lake effect snow
showers penetrate parts of Chip/Mack counties with a minor
accumulation. This chance looks less across northwest lower, but
still not zero and have continued chance PoPs across the typically
favored west-northwest flow snow belts Friday morning. High temps
considerable cooler than today, falling back closer to normal and
ranging from the mid 30s north to near 40 by Saginaw Bay.

By Friday evening, any lingering snow shower activity is expected to
have diminished area-wide with little in the way of sensible weather
anticipated through the remainder of the forecast period. Despite
partial sunshine returning for much of northern Michigan Saturday,
high temps struggle to reach much above freezing across eastern
upper and northwest lower...topping out in the mid-upper 30s near
Saginaw Bay.

High impact weather potential: Minimal for now.

Aforementioned high pressure remains in control across the Great
Lakes region through the upcoming weekend leading to continued dry
weather locally. The pattern becomes active once again heading to
the early-mid next week as latest progs suggest two pieces of
energy, one northern stream and one southern stream, may interact in
some fashion bringing a return of precip chances. However,
confidence is fairly low in any one solution at this time, but
certainly the potential for increased chances of wet/white weather
return late in the extended period.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night)

Low pressure from Manitoba through the Plains will congeal into a
strong low pressure that swings into eastern Ontario by daybreak
Friday, while swinging a cold front through nrn Michigan tonight.
Trapped low level moisture under an inversion will keep fairly
widespread MVFR stratus in the region through this morning, which
might mix out this afternoon, as southerly winds strengthen as the
low pressure starts to deepen. Moisture will also start to increase
late this afternoon, leading to a period of fairly widespread rain
that will sweep across all of nrn Michigan mainly this evening.
MVFR/IFR CIGS and VSBYS are expected with this rain. Behind the cold
front, MVFR CIGS are expected to continue in increasing overlake
instability and very gusty winds out of the west.

Low pressure from Manitoba through the Plains will congeal into a
strong low pressure that swings into eastern Ontario by daybreak
Friday, while swinging a cold front through nrn Michigan tonight.
Southerly winds ahead of this low pressure will strengthen today in
neutral to slightly stable overlake conditions. As the cold front
passes, the gradient strengthens more significantly as conditions
over the lakes go unstable. Advisory level winds for most nearshore
waters today, will turn to gale force in many nearshores behind the
cold front. This is expected late tonight through Friday, and even
into Friday night for some areas. This system will also bring fairly
widespread rain to the region late today through this evening. High
pressure and lighter winds then work into the region for the
weekend.
