Upper level troughing was over the Great Lakes this morning, with
mid level ridging seen from the lee of the Rockies up into central
Canada. Cold NW flow was continuing over nrn Michigan, with mainly
nuisance light snow impacting NW lower, eastern upper Michigan and
far NE lower Michigan. Strong high pressure was seen in the mid
Mississippi valley, with ridging poking up through eastern Ontario.
Very dry air was associated with this high pressure, and outside of
lake effect clouds, clear skies and chilly temperatures extended
from the central and nrn Plains up through much of central and
eastern Canada. Here in nrn Michigan, temperatures showed a wide
spread. Under lake effect clouds and light snow, readings were in
the single digits and low teens. Where skies are clear, temperatures
were below zero, with low lying protected areas as cold as the -
20s. Dress warm this morning!

Rather uneventful weather for today and tonight. The strong high
pressure will work eastward through the srn Great Lakes today, then
over to the east coast tonight. The sfc ridge axis will cross nrn
Michigan today, with winds eventually backing around out of the SW.
These SW winds pick up decently through the night, allowing for
moderating temperatures in WAA. The light snow and flurries will
swing from the NW flow snowbelts to the SW flow snowbelts over this
time, not allowing for any significant snow accumulations, as the
snow fans out over the region. Plus, inversion heights currently
around 4500 feet, will drop to 3000 feet or less through the day.
Very unimpressive for any decent snowfall. There is still enough low
level moisture for diurnal CU to develop and join the clouds in the
snowbelts, but these will fade with nightfall, resulting in clearing
skies over much of NE lower.

Highs today will be in the teens for most, with lows tonight not
allowed to get so cold due to the increasing winds. Readings will
generally be in the single digits to low teens.

.SHORT TERM...(Saturday night  through Sunday)

High impact weather potential: Possibility of some freezing drizzle
throughout Saturday. Strong wind gusts may create blowing and
drifting with reduced visibilities. These gusty winds may also
create possible lakeshore flooding along Lake Michigan and possibly
northern Lake Huron Saturday.

Gusty southwesterly winds will begin diminishing Saturday morning,
but will remain strong until the afternoon hours, especially near
the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron shorelines. High pressure centered
over the eastern seaboard will continue it's eastward movement as a
cold front stretching from near Hudson Bay to the Central Plains
approaches the forecast area. As already stated, winds will be gusty
Saturday...especially along the Lake Michigan shoreline, with gusts
up to 40 mph as the gradient between these different pressures
remains tight, but will diminish throughout the day. Warm air
advection precipitation will begin Saturday morning. Forecast
soundings show somewhat shallow moisture, barely reaching to -10C
and fairly dry above the moisture. For this reason I have the
possibilities of freezing drizzle through Saturday evening. With the
southwest winds we may also see some lake enhancement along the
coastline of Lake Michigan downwind...although lake parameters are
very marginal...so don't expect much at this time. A secondary cold
front swings through the forecast area early Sunday morning. Colder
temperatures will be filtered in with 850mb temperatures dropping
between -20 to -25C. Winds will begin to veer to northwesterly late
Saturday night and early Sunday morning. With little moisture and
flow becoming more anti-cyclonic, I believe at this time there will
only be minor accumulations through Sunday afternoon/evening.
Temperatures Saturday will be in the upper 20s to low 30s on
southwest winds and turning colder Sunday as said secondary cold
front begins it's transit through northern Michigan. Sundays highs
will be in the low to mid 20s over eastern upper, while northern
lower will be in the mid 20s to low 30s. Low temperatures Saturday
night will be in the upper teens to low 20s.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Thursday)

High impact weather potential: Another stronger system may impact
the region early next week...potentially bringing rain or a
rain/snow mix to northern Michigan.

Models are in fairly good consensus on a stronger storm system
approaching the Great Lakes region from the Central Great Plains
Monday/Tuesday...although models are differing in low pressure
track, timing, and intensity at this time...which will make all the
difference in precipitation type and amounts. Will have to continue
to monitor for more confidence and any changes that may occur.
Beyond this timeframe it appears only a few minor disturbances to
create some nuisance snow showers. Temperatures will be generally in
the upper 20s to low 30s during the daytime hours (with the
exception of Wednesday and Thursday, which will only reach into the
upper teens to mid 20s). Lows will to be cold...dropping into the
single digits to teens above zero.

High pressure centered over the mid Mississippi valley will work
it's way through the srn Great Lakes today, then over the east coast
Saturday. The pressure gradient tightens up significantly late
Friday night ahead of the next cold front approaching from the west.
LLWS is likely to become an issue late in the TAF period. In the
meantime, sporadic MVFR CIGS and VSBYS due to pesky nuisance light
snow/flurries, will continue to impact all airports into at least
daybreak. However, backing winds out of the west into this morning
ought to keep those impacts at just the NW lower airports for most
of today, and possible a good chunk of tonight as winds back out of
the SW, while we maintain shallow overlake instability. Meanwhile at
APN, skies are expected to clear late today and tonight.

High pressure centered over the mid Mississippi valley will work
it's way through the srn Great Lakes today, then over the east coast
Saturday. The pressure gradient really tightens up late tonight into
Saturday, with the approach of the next cold front set to pass late
Saturday and Saturday night.

Wind speeds are likely to ramp up into gales across many nearshore
waters late tonight into Saturday, especially Lake Michigan and from
Sturgeon Point to Alabaster. Winds fall off just a bit with the
passage of the front Saturday night into Sunday, but widespread
advisory level winds are anticipated as they veer from SW to NW.
