A shortwave trough was exiting east of nrn Michigan this morning,
and was getting replaced by slowly rising mid level heights, an
approaching ridge of sfc high pressure and drier air. Inversion
heights were getting squashed, and low level warm advection was
resulting in a less and less overlake instability. Latest radar
really show this is killing the remnant light snow/flurries and
patchy freezing drizzle. Still seeing some lake cloud development
however, coming in off the Great Lakes, so skies have remained
cloudy. Upstream, there was a shallow mid level ridge working our
way, with another shallow shortwave trough and associated weak sfc
low pressure crossing the nrn Rockies/western Canada. Lots of mid
and upper level cloud was working across Montana and the Dakotas,
with just some patchy light reflectivities on regional radars.
Pretty quiet weather expected for today and tonight. The mid level
and sfc ridging will cross nrn Michigan through today, with no
precipitation expected outside of maybe some remnant flurries
hanging on a bit after daybreak. The low level warm advection and
continued squashing of inversion heights, is expected to scour out
the lake clouds through the day, while we also see some increasing
higher level clouds later today. The pressure gradient tightens up
out ahead of the aforementioned weak sfc low and parent shortwave
trough, which will make it to the central U.S. and Canadian border
by this evening. Winds will turn out of the SW and become gusty this
afternoon. WAA will mostly be above the sf, with temperatures c, so
high temperatures will not be too much warmer than yesterday,
getting into the low to mid 30s.
That weak low pressure will just drift a bit further east tonight,
with a developing warm front extending through Lake Superior. While
the main weather will just be some thickening clouds and continued
periodically gusty SW winds, fcst soundings do suggest that there is
a slight chance for some light snow across eastern upper. Wouldn't
hold my breath on that however, the total atmospheric moisture
profile isn't fantastic and forcing, outside of warm advection
aloft, is weak. Lows tonight will mostly be in the upper 20s to
lower 30s.

...Complex Forecast Through The Weekend...
Synopsis: A complex forecast is in store for late this week as
uncertainty exists in regards to how systems that may impact the
area will develop between now and then. At the beginning of the
period, an amplified trough in western Mexico will begin to lift to
the northeast into the southern CONUS by Friday morning as a jet max
rotates out of the trough's exit region over the Mississippi Valley.
A clipper system supported by a weak shortwave will propagate
from the US/Canada border in the northern Great Plains east-
northeastward into James Bay during the same timeframe.
Synoptically, two main uncertainties exist at this time. First, the
potential development of a surface cyclone in the Mississippi Valley
associated with the aforementioned jet max, and second, the
progression/location of a second shortwave across the northern Great
Plains and potentially into the Great Lakes late Friday into early
Saturday. Recent guidance offers differing solutions to both of
these, which greatly affects forecast implications. Current thoughts
are that the most favorable upper-level support provided by the jet
max will be displaced from the developing cyclone, keeping it very
weak and mainly producing an elongated area of somewhat enhanced
pressure falls along a cold front moving into the eastern CONUS
rather than fully developing a cyclone as some guidance suggests.
As for the short wave, some solutions dig it far into the southern
US Friday night into Saturday morning, essentially becoming
encompassed within the longwave trough as a speed max after losing
curvature. Current thoughts are that this shortwave won't dig as
far south as some guidance suggests. This would bring a relatively
strong shortwave trough into the upper Mississippi Valley/Great
Lakes region that is mainly separate from the previously discussed
longwave trough by late Friday/early Saturday. As stated before,
current confidence is higher in these scenarios playing out, but
changes in these details could lead to important forecast changes.
Forecast/Details: The first chance for precipitation begins Thursday
afternoon associated with the cyclone moving towards James Bay and
the weak shortwave overhead. This system could help bring enough low-
level moisture into the region to support drizzle/freezing drizzle
across some areas of northern lower and possibly light snowfall
across eastern upper with forcing for ascent given by the shortwave
and the cold front moving through. Temperatures above the surface in
the moist layer are expected to be warmer than -10 C, making ice
nucleation for snow unlikely for Thursday as very dry air should
reside above 850-700mb.
As this system departs to the east, the second shortwave approaching
from the west brings more support for precipitation. The Friday-
Saturday timeframe is the main focus of the time period, and also
comes with the most uncertainty. With the shortwave expected to take
a more northward progression, more moisture could be brought into
the region and additional precipitation could begin on Friday.
Saturated low-level profiles could struggle getting to -10 C again,
at least initially before seeder-feeder processes begin. A light
snow/freezing drizzle mix may be most likely into Saturday morning
before cloud ice formation becomes dominant. With northwest winds
behind the cold front, albeit weak, lake effect snow would be
possible across northern Michigan snowbelts should favorable
moisture hang around. In all scenarios, the heaviest QPF is expected
to be focused to our south and east into the Ohio River
Valley through Saturday.
Otherwise, high temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s on
Thursday will drop below freezing for most by Saturday with cold air
advection from the passing front. Gusty winds are also possible
during the day Thursday.

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal for now...Possible
accumulating snow Sunday
Another clipper system could have impacts in the Great Lakes to end
the weekend as a shortwave progressing over the Rockies will provide
ample support as it approaches the area by Sunday. However, too much
uncertainty exists in the time periods prior to this that specific
details are not clear. However, accumulating snow is possible as
temperatures would likely be below freezing across much of the
forecast area. An active pattern will continue to provide chances
for an additional system/precipitation early next week, but
confidence will increase as next week draws closer. High
temperatures heading into the beginning of the workweek are
expected to be below freezing across much of the area, with
overnight lows dipping into the teens.

A weak ridge of high pressure will swing across the region this
morning, while the next low pressure works across the U.S. Canadian
border later today through tonight, and then across srn Ontario
Thursday and Thursday night. Winds back out of the southwest and the
gradient tightens up for numerous advisory level winds over this
time. There is even some expected gale force speeds late today and
tonight along portions of the NW lower coast. Winds will get a
little boost there from coastal convergence, and especially from
funneling through the Manitoulin Islands.
