.DISCUSSION...
First round of freezing drizzle, sleet, snow, and thundersnow was
moving through the Panhandles early this morning in association
with a lead short wave trough moving from southwest to northeast
across the Panhandles ahead of a deepening trough over the Great
Basin. Snow, sleet and freezing drizzle will continue through the
morning hours, and then the activity is expected to decrease some,
especially southeast of U.S. Highway 60. It looks like most of
the precipitation to the northwest of Highway 60 will be of the
frozen variety ie...snow/sleet. Freezing drizzle and sleet will be
more common southeast of Highway 60.
Precipitation is then expected to pick up again later tonight as
another short wave trough moves out ahead of the parent trough which
will be digging southward through Arizona. Again, the best chance
of snow will be across the west and northwest, with a wintry mix
elsewhere.
Snow in the west, with snow, sleet and freezing rain across the east
will continue to pick up Tuesday into Tuesday nigh the large closed
low starts moving from the bootheel of New Mexico and across
southern New Mexico. This low placement will put the Panhandles in
a favorable diffluent flow aloft and will help to bring plenty of
moisture into our area.
The upper level low is then expected to move northeast and pass
across the southeast Texas Panhandle or just southeast of our area
Wednesday evening. This could keep our area in wintry precipitation
for a longer period of time, so have gone ahead and not only
upgraded the Winter Storm Watch to a Warning but also extended it in
time to 7pm on Wednesday evening. In fact there may even be some
wrap-around precipitation across the northern areas through Wednesday
night in which case we may need to extend the warning further. On
Wednesday the system will wrap some warm air into it just above the
surface, which could expand the freezing rain, especially across the
eastern half of the Panhandles. The models do not agree on the
track of the upper level low. If it moves further southeast and we
do not get under the cold core of the low, then more freezing rain
and less snow will be possible, especially on Wednesday.
At this time, have gone with basically 4 to 10 inches of snow
generally northwest of a line from Slapout, OK to Clarendon, TX with
the northwest Texas Panhandle seeing the most. Freezing rain and
sleet should keep snow amounts down to the southeast of this line.
The forecast goes dry again after Thursday morning and a warming
trend will commence.
