.SYNOPSIS...
Clouds will increase today ahead of a developing storm system
across the center of our nation. This storm will rapidly
intensify and bring periods of rain, perhaps a thunderstorm,
overnight into Monday. Furthermore, strong to potentially
damaging wind gusts may accompany this storm through Monday into
Monday evening. Cooler and brisk weather returns through the
middle of the week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1230 PM EDT...Have a southerly return flow occurring
about the departing ridge. Still expecting highs into the 50s
to lower 60s with any 40s limted to the highest terrain of the
southern Adirondacks, eastern Catskills and southern Green
Mountains. Clouds will continue to increase across the region.
Still looking at a dry day with warm advection and isentropic
lift going toward moistening up the mid levels of the atmosphere.
Low pressure system evolving across the Southern Plains in
response to a potent southern stream short wave and jet.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY/...
High Wind Watch expanded to include the Capital Region,
Schoharie Valley and Mohawk Valley. High Wind Watch continues
for the mid-Hudson Valley, Taconics, northwest CT and
Berkshires...

The aforementioned southern stream jet and approaching short
wave will result in an evolving negatively tilted trough through
the mid-lower Mississippi River Valley into the Great Lakes
region tonight into Monday. Impressive downstream low level jet
magnitudes, moisture transport magnitudes, southerly wind
anomalies and high PWATs to advect into the region from south
to north. Rain showers, or periods of rain, will develop around
or shortly after midnight. Temperatures overnight will likely
drop around 10 degrees or so from the daytime highs before
steady or slowly rising values toward sunrise.

Monday, potential for moderate to heavy rainfall from higher
anomalous PWATs of 3-4 standard deviations above, moisture flux
anomalies above 6 standard deviations and south facing slopes
of the Catskills, Dacks and southern Greens. This is before any
convective elements (more on that shortly). See the hydro
section below for potential impacts from rainfall. As for
convective potential, we are in coordination with SPC and
surrounding offices to update the previously issued SWODY2
outlook (issued at 0521Z). UPDATE, per the 0820Z the 'marginal
risk' was adjusted northward to include areas west and south of
Albany. HREF MUCAPES are a little higher than previous runs with
values around 500 J/kg in the wake of the rainfall and along
the cold front. A few low top convective cells may develop if we
get some breaks of April sunshine and this leads to the wind
potential. Winds at or above 2k feet are progged to climb in
excess of 60kts (peak values into the 80kt range around 5k feet
per NAM/GFS). So high potential for damaging wind gusts to
either mix down with increasing mixing layer heights and/or
convective elements able to transport those magnitudes to the
surface. As strong cold front, associated with ~980mb low in the
vicinity of Sault Ste Marie late Monday afternoon, pushes
through the region, another wind potential appears to be
unfolding. Portions of the Catskills, Mohawk Valley into the
Capital Region may see a quick increase in mixing layer heights
for a period of damaging wind gusts. Per close coordination with
our neighboring forecast offices, we will expand that watch
westward. Of course, this is all dependent if we are able to
break the stratus deck across the region, hence a watch at this
time. As for temperatures on Monday, generally well into the 60s
for the region (ECMWF MOS is the coolest compared to the
NAM/GFS values which was blended at this time).

Monday night, in the wake of the fropa, modest cold advection
will commence with a decrease in the precipitation coverage and
a slow diminishing trend in the wind magnitudes across the
region. Due to the cold advection across the open waters of Lake
Ontario, wind trajectories are generally from the WSW where some
lake effect rain/snow showers will be possible into portions of
northern Herkimer County and maybe as far inland as western
Hamilton County. Under partly cloudy to mostly clear skies,
overnight lows drop back into the 30s for most areas with around
40F for mid-Hudson Valley and Litchfield County, CT as H850
temperatures drop back below 0C with near  -10C by daybreak
Tuesday northwest of Albany.

Tuesday will remain rather brisk with tight pressure gradient in
place but lower mean layer RH fields for a dry day across the
region. A variable cloud coverage field will likely result in a
partly sunny day with a diverse temperature field. Downsloping
component into the mid-Hudson Valley into Litchfield County will
bring temperatures into the mid-upr 50s to around 40F for
portions of the Dacks.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The long term period will mainly consist of a longwave trough over
the region with several weak disturbances passing through bringing
scattered rain/snow shower activity. A stronger system may form over
next weekend with a more widespread rain/snow. Details are below.

Starting Tuesday night and Wednesday, an upper level shortwave will
pass to the south across the central Appalachians and will attempt
to form a surface low along a stalled front off the East coast. The
00z/Mon suite of models generally keep the surface low far enough to
the south and east for little if any precipitation (best chances
across the mid-Hudson Valley and NW CT). Meanwhile, another
shortwave will approach from the Midwest and tap into moisture from
the Great Lakes. This will bring a few scattered rain/snow showers
with the best snow chances in the higher elevations. Activity
gradually fizzles out Wednesday night as the shortwaves push off to
the east.

The next shortwave will follow a similar path on Thursday with
another round of scattered rain showers (with some higher elevation
snow showers). A small area of high pressure will pass by to our
south Thursday night into early Friday with a brief period of drier
weather.

Later Friday into Saturday, a stronger shortwave will track from the
Midwest toward the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Enough of a neutral
to negative tilt of the shortwave will induce cyclogenesis of a
surface low across the mid-Atlantic and/or just off the coast.
Regardless, enough of a precipitation shield may bring widespread
light to moderate precipitation to the region. Thermal profiles
remain questionable, but early indications suggest precipitation to
be all rain or a rain/snow mix for the valleys and mainly snow for
the higher elevations. Still plenty of time to monitor this feature.

Temperatures during the long term will average 4-8 degrees below
normal.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Mid level clouds will continue to thicken across the area through
this evening, as southerly flow increases ahead of a strong storm
system approaching from the south and west. Initially dry conditions
in the low levels, so will see a gradual decrease in ceiling heights
through into the overnight hours. Rain is expected to develop
between 06Z-07Z across the terminals, as the storm moves into the
Ohio Valley region. The rain will become moderate to briefly heavy
at times, prior to 12Z with conditions deteriorating to MVFR. Rain
will continue through around 18Z Monday, as the storm tracks near
the lower Great Lakes.

Low level wind shear will be prevalent starting around 06Z Monday
through the rest of the TAF period ending 18Z Monday. A strong
southerly low level jet will be moving overhead, increasing from 45
kt initially to 55 kt by early Monday morning.

Surface winds will be south-southeast around 6-12 kt, increasing to
around 10-15 kt overnight with gusts around 20-25 kt developing.
Winds will become south-southwest and increase to 13-18 kt with
gusts up to 30 kt Monday morning.

The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) continues to highlight a
'marginal risk' of excessive rainfall across the southeast
third of the forecast area for Monday. Expecting 1 to 2 inches
of rainfall across this area with the higher values into the
terrain. Otherwise general around an inch or so elsewhere.
Localized higher amounts are possible where thunderstorms occur.
Urban and poor draining flooding will be possible but river
flooding is not expected at this time. Latest MMEFS continues to
suggest a couple points, Hinckley down to Kast Bridge with the
higher probabilities of rising water levels.
