near the waterfront will experience shallow flooding.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be

.SYNOPSIS...
An area of high pressure will be centered across New England and
extend across the Mid-Atlantic this afternoon, bringing cooler
temperatures. Southerly flow returns for Sunday night ahead of
an approaching cold front. The front crosses the area on Monday,
followed by cooler and drier conditions Tuesday and Wednesday
as high pressure builds in from the north.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 200 PM EDT Saturday...
Latest analysis depicts ~1029mb sfc high pressure centered just
off the coast of northern New England, extending SSW into the
mid-Atlantic. A relatively moist low level flow continues
across the local area, but there has been enough drying of the
low levels for skies to avg out partly sunny to the E of I-95.
Overall, skies are still mainly cloudy W of I-95 (particularly
over the NW sections of the CWA). This has kept temperatures
only in the lower 70s there, with readings in the mid 70s to
around 80F elsewhere. Other than a sprinkle in the Piedmont,
conditions are now mainly rain-free across the region and this
should continue into the evening. It will remain breezy along
the coast in SE VA/NE NC into the early evening with gusts to
around 25 mph, with a gradual downward trend in the winds
expected tonight.
Overnight and into Sunday, the models (to a varying degree) show
some increase in moisture along the coast from a stalled
front/sfc trough off the Carolina coast. Will have clouds
increasing back to mostly cloudy all areas overnight. There
should be sufficient mixing in the SE to keep fog from
developing, but think at least patchy fog will try to develop in
the Piedmont from 06-12Z. Lows tonight will be coolest on the MD
eastern shore and over the NW where lows will avg in the lower
60s, with lows in the upper 60s to lower 70s near the coast in
SE VA/NE NC. Generally mostly cloudy Sunday morning, with
partly sunny skies by late morning or early aftn inland, while staying
mostly cloudy with some low chances for showers over the SE
portions of the CWA as some of the moisture from the sfc trough
off the coast makes it as far NW as SE VA and NE NC. The airmass
will modify and become a little more humid with aftn dew pts
into the upper 60s/lower 70s. Highs will be mainly between
80-85F.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 345 PM EDT Saturday...
Models continue in good agreement with the overall pattern as
a cold front approaches from the NW Sun night, and crosses the
area during the day Monday. Forcing and deep moisture along the
front is rather weak and as such, the models are not in
agreement on whether the front will pass through dry or not. The
12Z/12 GFS remains significantly wetter compared to the
NAM/ECWMF. For now will maintain 30-40% PoPs across the area
(mainly Mon morning NW, shifting to the S/SE by Mon aftn). Have
only minimal QPF in the gridded forecast (less than 0.10").
Monday will feature highs of 80-85F, though in the south
readings may reach highs by midday then fall into the 70s.
Behind the front, much drier and cooler air filters into the
area for Monday night and Tue. Low temperatures Tuesday morning
will range from the mid 50s NW to upper-60s SE. On Tue, strong
sfc high pressure will initially be centered over NY state and
builds S into the Delmarva by aftn. Breezy, especially along
the coast and mostly sunny with highs only in the 70s all zones.
There will likely be more clouds/Bay/Ocean streamers across far
SE VA and NE NC as cooler air flows over the warm waters of the
Bay/Ocean.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 130 PM EDT Saturday...
Latest ECMWF ENS and GEFS each depicting a rather progressive
northern stream flow through the medium range period, as a deep
trough closes off upstream in the eastern Pacific/PAC NW. At
the surface, a cool-air wedge pattern looks to evolve for the
mid to late week period over the lower Mid- Atlantic, as 1026+mb
sfc high pressure over eastern New England ridges down the
eastern seaboard into the western Carolinas. This should provide
another mild, pleasant day on Wed, with mainly dry wx
prevailing through Thu. We re-introduce slight to low-end
chance PoPs Friday and Friday night, out ahead of the upper
trough and the next attendant sfc frontal system to approach/cross
the region late Fri into next weekend. Will need to watch this
period closely, as models do show potential for additional
tropical moisture from "TD Nineteen" over the east-central Gulf
coast also potentially becoming entrained into the trough, which
could result in a rainier day on Friday than is currently
depicted in the forecast.
Highs mainly in the 70s on Wed, before moderating slightly into the
upper 70s to low 80s Thursday/Friday, cooling back down into the 70s
behind the front next weekend. Chilly early morning lows Wed
morning in the upper 40s to mid 50s inland...to low 60s along
the coast. Lows in the mid 50s to mid 60s Thu-Sat mornings.

.AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 200 PM EDT Saturday...
SCT-BKN cumulus across main terminals this aftn (and occasional
MVFR CIGs between 2000-3000 ft. A rather breezy E/NE flow
prevails near the coast with gusts to 20-25kt. Skies are mainly
overcast over the northern Piedmont but this should remain W of
the main terminals into this evening. Expect mainly VFR
conditions this evening, with some low stratus expected to
develop/move back in overnight due to the moist easterly flow
with CIGs likely to lower to MVFR levels. Some patchy fog will
be possible/mainly well inland where winds will become
light/variable. The best chance will tend to be W of I-95 and
again away from the primary terminals. Generally less wind on
Sunday, with mostly cloudy skies through midday becoming partly
sunny.
Outlook:
A cold front will move in from the NW Sun night and cross the
local area on monday. Some scattered showers will be possible,
mainly Monday morning (lasting into Mon aftn SE VA/NE NC). It
will become breezy behind the front Mon night/Tue (especially
along the coast). Mostly sunny Tue-Wed for most areas, but there
could be some periodic MVFR CIGs on Tue at ORF/ECG due cool NE
winds having a trajectory over the warm Ocean/Bay waters.

As of 330 PM EDT Saturday...
Latest Obs and buoy reports reflect E-NE flow 10-20 kt across the
waters this aftn. Ridge of strong sfc high pressure (1028+)
continues to nudge south across the region from eastern New England.
SCA have been lowered across the upper James/York/Rappahannock
earlier this aftn, and will come down early this evening for the
Ches Bay north of New Point Comfort. Extended SCA slightly over the
Sound/lower James, so these areas plus the lower Bay drop out of SCA
after 10p/1a, as gradient slowly slackens with sfc high pushing
offshore of the Mid-Atlantic coast. Longer duration SCA now in
effect through Monday night over the coastal waters, with persistent
wind wave from E-NE winds driving seas ~5-7 ft through Sunday
night.
Winds diminish and seas do briefly start to drop off tomorrow night
ahead of an approaching cold front. However, a strong, longer period
swell arrives on Monday, courtesy of TC Paulette well offshore. This
will bring strong 12-15 second period easterly swell Monday and
Monday night, even as winds veer around to the N-NW Mon aftn and
night as the strong cold front crosses the area. A stronger CAA
surge is expected late Mon night into Tue, with SCA likely needed
all waters for strong CAA surge after midnight Mon night into early
Tuesday morning.
Winds will drop below SCA for the Rivers later Tue morning, and by
evening on the lower Bay and Sound. Strong, persistent influx of E
swell energy will likely keep SCA around on the coastal waters for
Haz Seas for much of the upcoming week into next weekend.

As of 200 PM EDT Saturday...
A Flood Warning remains in effect for the Blackwater River at
Franklin. The water level continues to slowly fall but will
likely remain above flood stage through late aftn/early
evening.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 440 AM EDT Saturday...
PETSS guidance continues to show little in the way of tidal flooding
this weekend into Monday despite the onshore flow. However, building
seas and some longer period swell from distant TC Paulette well
out in the Atlantic. Expect several areas to exceed caution
stage and even approach minor flooding thresholds across the
Ches Bay as early as tomorrow evening and with high tide cycles
on Monday.
Just something to monitor at this stage, but as more powerful
12-15 second easterly swell arrives Monday, there is potential
for gradual buildup of water on several successive flood tides
early next week. This, along with persistent (if gradually
diminishing) onshore flow Tue/Wed, could lead to some elevated
flood levels and potentially some coastal flood issues for the
middle to end of the week.
Swells of 10-12 seconds and lighter winds tomorrow will be more
conducive to Rip Currents. Will therefore go with a high rip
current risk for all beaches tomorrow, and possibly on Monday as
well.
