.SHORT TERM...A low pressure center is moving north over the
eastern gulf coast ushering in more moisture and warm air through
the panhandle. Main band of the rain is across the central and
southern panhandle, expect this to reach the northern Lynn Canal
area by mid morning. Cooler temperature away from the water near
the border on the Haines Highway and higher elevations expecting 5
to 10 inches of wet snow to fall between 9 am and 9 pm. So have
issued a Winter Storm Warning for the heavy snows. The
temperatures in areas with the snow should be in the upper 20s to
lower 30s. Lower elevations and closer to Haines it seem that most
precip will fall as rain with rainfall totals about an inch.

There will be a small break after this system moves through the
area Saturday evening to late Saturday night. The incoming frontal
band will sweep into the panhandle Sunday morning and through by
end of Sunday night. This band moves through a bit faster than the
previous ones so this will limit the time for the heavier rains
and amounts or less than one inch is currently expected. This
front will have have tight pressure pattern and strong winds of
35 to 45 kt over the outer coastal zone. As the front makes
landfall Sunday a large stretch of the coast area will likely see
gusts to 40 mph on coast. Part of Baranof Island and Prince of
Wales and along Clarence Strait the gusts could reach up to 60
mph. There is some confidence issues so will let the watch persist
and have one more set of models to double check the strength of
the winds near the front as is moves into Canada.

Behind the front on Sunday, there look to be enough instability on
back ends of the front that Convective indices (CAPE and LI's)
were suggesting that isolated Thunder may be found near the coast
from Cape Suckling to near Yakutat. Have that in the forecast
from about midday into the evening hours.

.LONG TERM.../Mon through Saturday as of 10 pm Thu/ The long range
period continues to show strong indications of the active weather
pattern holding the course. Through the first half of the week a
broad area of low pressure in the Western Gulf will continue to
encourage onshore flow across the panhandle, keeping rain and
cloud cover at the forefront of the forecast. Some shortwaves
within this flow could bring chances of stronger winds and more
organized precipitation throughout the area during this time
period. Through Tuesday and Wednesday the low will slowly
dissipate. Afterwards, model agreement rapidly falls apart on the
timing and placement of the systems moving in after it.

Temperatures will be on a downward trend through the week. After
surging up with the more recent systems that have impacted the
area, CAA behind the Sunday front will begin a gradual cooling
trend which will be accelerated by cooler air moving along the
southern and western flank of the broad low in the gulf through
Wednesday. Some areas could see a return to snowfall at sea level
during this time period. Also of note is the possibility of some
periods of sun for parts of the panhandle during the second half
of the week. Though sharp disagreement remains, there are some
indications that a system on Wednesday or Thursday could track
South, which would bring Northerly flow to SE. Confidence in this
outcome remains low, and will need to be monitored.
