The high wind gusts from earlier today have calmed down and are
not expected to return. Gusts ranged as high as 70 mph at times
earlier today.

.SHORT TERM...The surface low is moving east-northeast over the
northern Gulf of Alaska while slowly weakening. The low is
expected to move onshore just south of Yakutat and then reform in
northwest Canada. The associated front to move through the
panhandle today was just offshore Yakutat early Wednesday morning.
Heavy snow started falling before midnight at Yakutat and started
every early Wednesday over northern Lynn Canal. Winter storm
warnings presently in effect are still looking good at the moment.

Rain and snow is falling across the rest of the northern and
central panhandle as expected. Visibilities to 3 miles or less in
snow and or heavy rain and ceilings vary between 700 ft and 2500
ft for much of the panhandle are being reported for the start of
Wednesday.

The atmospheric river which is supplying the moisture for the
precipitation is expected to move southeast to exit the southern
panhandle late Wednesday evening. The feature is quick moving so
QPF values will be limited with 1 to 2 inches of rain possible.
Should be some lingering showers over the central panhandle from
flow about the low near Yakuatat late Wednesday into Thursday and
then those showers will end as well with clearing from the
development of the surface ridge over the western and central gulf
into the southern central portion of the state. Continue to see
decreasing clouds through Thursday night.

.LONG TERM.../Friday through Wednesday/...As of 10 PM
Tuesday...Mid level blocking ridge that becomes established over
the AK Gulf Thursday night into Friday expected to remain in place
through at least the weekend and possibly into the start of next
week. Still fair amount of model differences as they do not handle
the timing of ridge break downs and impact of up stream waves
well. Expect the panhandle to remain dry due to surface high over
the gulf. Any waves for the weekend look to remain to the west of
the region. Northerly and weak outflow winds expected to shift
southerly Sunday into Sunday night. This flow pattern change will
usher in warmer air mass to the region. 850 mb Temp standard
deviation of +2-3 C for the weekend. Large diurnal temperature
swings for the start of the long range due to relatively clear
skies with additional day time heating and nocturnal radiational
cooling with temps. Highs low 40s to possible low 50s with lows
initially in the low 20s and possibly lower for higher elevations
and far northern areas then warming into the upper 20s to mid
30s. Break down of the ridge possible Monday into Tuesday with
next chance of precipitation moving into the Gulf followed by more
active weather pattern. Kept with ensemble solutions for the long
range with forecast confidence being low due to models having
issues with timing of ridge break down.
