.SHORT TERM...The brief respite SE Alaska is enjoying between
systems will soon come to an end. Clearing skies throughout the
day combined with saturated soils to facilitate the development of
fog across much of the panhandle. This fog will linger in some
parts of the central panhandle through the evening before a
combination of strengthening winds and increasing cloud cover
encourages its dissipation.
This approaching cloud shield is the vanguard of the next system
which will impact SE. This system is developing along an old
frontal boundary South of Haida Gwaii and will move North along
the outer coast through Christmas Day. The Southern Panhandle will
see rain Thursday night through Friday, while the Icy Strait
Corridor northward will be favored to receive snow. Given the
system's overall speed, think that precipitation will not arrive
in the Icy Strait Corridor until Friday afternoon or evening.
Just how much precipitation SE will receive continues to remain a
forecast challenge. Offshore flow ahead of the system will help
dry out the atmospheric column in the central and northern
panhandle. This, in conjunction with N outflow winds, could be
sufficient to fragment the precip shield, reducing the total QPF
which would be received. Alternatively, if the system fully holds
together some areas could receive more QPF than currently
anticipated. Either way, the system does not look all that
impressive compared to some of the systems which have interacted
with the panhandle over the last few months.
Given all of this, there will still be impacts associated with the
system. Chief among these impacts will be snow and wind. The Icy
Strait Corridor will likely receive between 1-3 inches of snow
from this event. Localized areas could receive more or less snow
depending on precipitation coverage, as discussed above. Some
areas, like Juneau downtown, could also receive less snow as
downsloping winds warm temperatures at the surface. The winds in
Juneau will be the result of a mountain wave event which will see
downtown gusting as high as 45 mph, with winds in the valley
anticipated to be lighter. Elsewhere, the gradient between
Canadian high pressure and the approaching low will lead to breezy
conditions on land. Gale force and small craft winds will
dominate in the outer coastal waters and inner channels.
Beyond this, the weekend is looking increasingly likely to enjoy
a break from the active weather pattern, as ridging builds in the
Eastern gulf. This is not yet certain however, as some model
disagreement still remains, particularly in the GFS and Canadian
operational model runs. Winds will shift from N to S as the
system pushes through on Friday. Forecaster confidence is below
average.
.LONG TERM.../ Saturday through Thursday as of 10 pm Wednesday /
The long range forecast opens up with a lull in the weather
compared to much of the rest of December. High pressure to the
east and upper level ridging should provide some breaks in the
clouds Saturday through Monday. Flow around the high running
parallel to the panhandle should provide the possibility for some
isolated showers, mainly confined to the southern inner channels
and the northeast Gulf coast during this time frame as well. To
account for this, PoPs were knocked back quite a bit. The
possibility for fog Saturday night was interrogated, however,
still a bit uncertain if flow will turn more onshore limiting such
an occurrence, thus relegating it to simply a mention here for
the time being.
Monday, a front begins to move toward the region from the west.
This should bring increased winds, at the very least, to the open
Gulf and the coastal waters through the day under an increasing
pressure gradient. Precipitation chances increase Monday for Gulf
coast and northern panhandle locations, however early indications
are that this system will weaken as it encounters land.
Confidence is good in that the forecast period will begin with
mostly benign weather, but degrades significantly as we go into
the following week.
