Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Very complex weather affecting the region this
weekend with nearly every wx element being impactful. Saturday
starts off with widespread rain, stout southerly winds, and warm
air advection. The weather is being driven by a SWLY upper level
jet with a long fetch of moisture from the tropics. A surface low
off the coast of Yakutat will track eastward through the day,
causing a wind shift to the west and allowing the bulk of the rain
to let up in the evening (good news for trick-or-treaters).

The jet/tropical moisture stream will still be connected over the
far southern panhandle overnight, then start increasing as a new
developing low pressure system tracks northward to the south-
central gulf Sunday morning. Meanwhile, an upper level trough with
a polar connection and an artic front will be pushing into the
northern borders. While it will no longer be Halloween, this is
where things get scary. The confluence of the warm/deepening low
center and a tightening northerly pressure gradient with much
colder air will lead to north winds increasing to Storm Force by
Sunday evening for northern Lynn Canal. As the low moves into the
SE gulf, winds out of the S-SE along the southern outer coast and
Ketchikan area will increase with gusts of around +45mph likely
Sunday afternoon/evening.

Heavy rain will continue across the southern panhandle and spread
northward to the Juneau latitude in the afternoon. A flood watch
remains in effect for much of the region Sunday into Monday as
rates could push rivers to their banks and pose the rise of slides
in prone areas. For the Haines/Skagway area, CAA will set in
causing temperatures to decrease through Sunday and change
precipiation to snow in the afternoon at sea level. The heavy
precip rates from the low moving up and the increasing north
winds will result in probable blizzard conditions for
Haines/Skagway and the highways. The rain snow line will likely be
pushed south by the north winds causing Gustavus and out the road
in Juneau to possibly see snow mixing in Sunday night, but
confidence in how far south it goes is below average and will
depend on the ultimate track of the low.

.LONG TERM.../ Monday to Saturday as of 10 pm Friday/ Long wave
trough is forming over the Gulf of Alaska from Monday to the
Thursday with combination of a low moving south from Alaska to
near Prince William Sound with a short wave driving southward from
northwest of the Arctic Slope over the western part of the state
into the western gulf. By Thursday this short wave is headed
towards the Pacific Northeast and the WA/OR coastlines. A broad
ridge aloft covers the western gulf into the western part of the
state.

Monday will see SEAK dealing with the tail end of potential
Flooding (Central/Southern panhandle) plus Heavy snow and end of
a possible Blizzard (Nrn Lynn Canal) please see short term for
more info on these items. SE should wind down to chance/likely
showers from onshore flow, with a slow spread of snow vs rain as
colder air continues to spill southward. Dry / cool weather from
late Friday into the weekend.

By the End of the week most of the panhandle will be struggling to
have high temperatures top out above freezing, with Prince of
Wales Island having the better bet of that. High pressure with
central pressure in the mid 1040s is possible over NW Canada and
this will likely lead to good outflow winds headed to the weekend
and may need to watch for a potential Taku event. North winds were
increased some to reflect this idea, but will likely need to be
increased more.
