Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Quiet conditions across northern Alaska continue this morning.
Lingering snow in the southeastern Alaska Range continue for
today, while northerly gap flow has subsided through the Alaska
Range passes. Light snow and flurries along the West Coast
expected to slowly dissipate ahead of another push of moisture
from the north across the West Coast, bringing higher chances for
snow through tonight. Otherwise, temperatures remain bitterly cold
along the North Slope for today before a warming trend, with
temperatures trending down in the Interior going into the end of
the week.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft, general troughing exists across the state this morning.
The parent low is located north of Banks Island, with a trough
extending into the Western Interior and down over Nunivak Island.
This trough has brought clouds and occasional snow to the West
Coast. This trough will work east across the Interior today,
before slowly sliding across the Canadian border by tomorrow
night. Beyond tomorrow night, ridging builds in across the state,
with colder air being ushered into the Interior ahead of the ridge
due to northerly flow. Going into the weekend, temperatures
warming as the flow becomes more west to east.

At the surface, low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska and extending
east into the Yukon Territory will persist going into tomorrow
afternoon. This will keep a gradient along the southern Alaska
Range, keeping northerly flow through the passes. Weak low
pressure will move south from the Siberian Coast to the West Coast
today, bringing increased chances for snow through this evening.
High pressure will then build into the Interior going into the
later portions of the week.

Central and Eastern Interior...
The main story to highlight for the next couple of days will be
well below normal temperatures. Many areas have dipped into the
middle 20s below this morning, with the Yukon Flats dipping into
the 40s below. This trend of cold temperatures will continue, with
Fairbanks expected to see another couple of nights into the 30s
below before a warming trend beginning on Friday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Bitter cold temperatures in the 30s to 40s below continuing this
morning for the North Slope. Temperatures expected to warm with
increasing clouds today, but still remain in the 20s to 30s below
ahead of a more significant warming trend for Thursday. Otherwise,
the most noteworthy weather to highlight is a weak front that is
expected to bring light snow and flurries on Thursday.

Western Interior and West Coast...
Weak low pressure will move southeast into Kotzebue Sound today,
bringing increasing chances for snow along the West Coast going
into tonight. Snow accumulations will range between one half inch
to an inch, mainly on the northern side of the Seward Peninsula.
Temperatures will be warmer along the West Coast and holding
steady going into the later portions of the week, while the
Western Interior will remain in the 20s to 30s below.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
