Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

Synopsis...The cold is on its way out, but not before another
cold night for the Central and Eastern Interior. Temperatures west
of Fairbanks are already rising as some clouds move through the
area. Front will spread snow up the West Coast today, with another
front spreading snow up the coast and into the Western Interior
tonight. Heavy snow expected on the Seward Peninsula. Winds
picking up in the Arctic and Brooks Range. Winds remain strong
just above the surface, so gusty winds on summits west and
northwest of Fairbanks will continue. Winds picking up in the
Delta Junction area tonight as the Tanana Valley Jet kicks in.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...Temperature battle continues, the solutions don't agree,
again, so will continue to just make minor adjustments to the
current database. Solutions do seem to be catching up, but slowly.
The 11/00Z solutions are in good agreement through the midrange
before diverging. Surface solutions initialized well against the
11/06Z surface analysis. Precipitation solutions area in good
agreement. Winds are a bit stronger in the NAM solution, so will
lean that way again today.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Ridge axis that was over the West Coast has
shifted east to lie over Sand Point to Anvik to Wainwright and
north over the Central Arctic with a 536 dam high over the Western
Arctic Plain. Troughing associated with a 504 dam low over the
Central Northwest Territories continues to dig southwest, but has
moved south over the Copper River Basin and Southcentral Alaska
this morning. A 493 dam low has moved over the Northwest Bering
Sea with a shortwave extending east over 60N, and another
extending south over 176E. As the ridge slides east to lie from
Prince William Sound to Nenana to Deadhorse and north by Sunday
morning, the shortwave over 60N will move north over the Bering
Strait by this afternoon, and over the Southwest Arctic. The low
will move slowly over the Gulf of Anadyr Sunday morning, and the
shortwave to the south will rotate to lie from the low southeast
over Nunivak Island. The ridge continues to slide east Sunday and
will be over the AlCan Border Sunday night with the high moving
over Demarcation Point at 538 dam. The ridge moving east will
allow the second shortwave to move northeast into the state to lie
from Anchorage to Galena to Shishmaref to the low over the
Northeast Gulf of Anadyr at 509 dam. The ridge will rotate east
over the Yukon Territory, while the low over the Gulf of Anadyr
will move to200 nm northwest of Utqiagvik and the shortwave will
move northeast across the state to be over the Eastern Arctic
Coast and Eastern Interior. A 518 dam low will develop over the
Noatak/Kobuk Basin Monday evening as another shortwave moves over
the West Coast and Western Interior. The low will move over the
Upper Yukon Flats Tuesday as the shortwave moves over the Central
Arctic and Interior. At 850 hpa...-20C isotherm continues to hang
on over the Upper Tanana Valley south of Chicken this morning.
The
-10C isotherm has push over the West Coast and lies from Kodiak
 City to Point Hope. The -20C isotherm will move out of the state
 Saturday night as the -10C isotherm continues to push east and
 north over the state. By Sunday morning the -10C isotherm will
 lie from Dot Lake to Livengood to Ambler, then northeast along
 the crest of the Brooks Range. By Sunday evening temperatures
 over the state will range from around -10C to around -15C.
 Temperatures will start to slowly cool Monday. At 925 hpa...A
 core of strong winds continues to the west and northwest of
 Fairbanks, but will be weakening and rotating to the northeast
 today as the first shortwave moves north up the coast to the
 Southwest Arctic. A band of stronger winds, 25 kt to 35 kt, will
 persist from the Upper Tanana Valley over Fairbanks to Ambler to
 Point Lay through Sunday afternoon before diminishing.

Surface...High pressure persists over most of mainland Alaska
with a 1039 mb high in the Upper Tanana Valley, a 1039 mb high in
the Upper Porcupine Basin, and a 1033 mb high 200 nm north of
Deadhorse. High pressure extends north into the high Arctic and
southwest over Bristol Bay and Sand Point. A 954 mb low has moved
to 300 nm north of Attu and weather front will be moving up the
West Coast today and will be near the Bering Strait this
afternoon, and across the Chukchi Sea tonight. The low will
continue to move northeast into the Gulf of Anadyr by Sunday
morning. Another weather front associated with the low will move
to the Northeast Bering Sea Sunday morning, then northeast into
the state Sunday evening and Monday. High pressure over the Arctic
will move over the Beaufort Sea, while high pressure will hold on
over the Upper Yukon Flats and the Upper Tanana Valley into
Monday morning before pulling back a bit to the east. Leeside
troughing developing over the Arctic Plain will produce some
strong gusty south winds near Brooks and Alaska Range Passes, and
as the low moves north the gradient across the Arctic will
tighten.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...As the high moves east the
gradient across the area tightens with the low moving to the
Western Arctic. Warming temperatures. South winds increasing and
becoming gusty near Brooks Range passes with some blowing and
drifting snow.

West Coast and Western Interior...Weather front will spread a
little snow up the coast today, the next front will spread even
more, especially along the Southern Seward Peninsula tonight and
Sunday. Snow will generally be along the coast today, with more
spreading inland Sunday and Monday with the second front. Winds
generally east to southeast at 15 to 25 mph gusting around 40 mph.
Strongest winds will be in the Kotzebue Sound/Chukchi Sea area.
The cold is releasing its grip in the Western Interior this
morning, and expect temperatures to continue to rise through the
day.

Central and Eastern Interior...Continued mostly clear into
Sunday, then increasing clouds by Sunday evening. Patchy ice fog
this morning, mainly in the North Pole area. Winds picking up on
the summits mainly west and northwest Eielson. Temperatures in the
hills will remain much warmer than the valleys. Strong shallow
inversion continues. Some blowing snow and Wind Chill at Ptarmigan
Pass along the Elliott Highway, and Gobblers Knob on the Dalton
Highway, as well as other summits in those areas. Temperatures
will warm a few degrees today, but expect a big warmup Sunday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...A front will be working its
way northeast across the state Sunday and Monday. Snow will push
into the Western Interior and north into the Upper Kobuk basin
Sunday night, then into the Central Interior and Central Brooks
Range during the day Monday. The front falls apart, but will
continue to bring some light snow to locations north of the Tanana
Valley through Tuesday. As the low moves into the Arctic, the
front will move east over the coast spreading snow to most of the
Arctic Tuesday and Wednesday. More cold on the way for late in the
week.
