Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow lingers across the eastern Interior as a slow moving
front tracks east. Colder temperatures are expected across much
of the state over the next couple of days as high pressure
traverses the Interior. Winds and temperatures will increase
across the West Coast and western North Slope early Thursday as a
strong front nears the northwest coast. Heavy snow and
potentially blizzard conditions are possible Thursday into Friday
across the northwest coast and western North Slope.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft 500mb...
A complicated setup aloft features a 501 dam low over the eastern
Brooks Range with a trough axis extending south to Anchorage. This
feature will push east and move into Canada by early Wednesday. An
Arctic ridge will follow and generally be the dominant synoptic
feature over the state through early Thursday. Longwave troughing
over Siberia will deepen and reach as far south as Japan by
Wednesday. At the same time, a low will become cutoff south of the
Aleutians and deepen as it remains relatively stationary near 40N.
This will force the ridge in between these systems to amplify as
it tracks east. The net result will be strong high pressure over
the Interior, with extensive southwesterly flow into northwest
Alaska by Thursday. Models are in general agreement that an omega
block pattern, anchored by a 575 dam high near Kodiak, will form
Friday and persist into next week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Cloudy skies and a few flurries will continue east of Nuiqsut
through this afternoon and gradually push east through tonight.
Wind Chill Advisories continue for this area through this
afternoon as west winds of around 15 to 20 mph gradually
diminish. Additionally, gusty north winds are also causing Wind
Chill Advisories for passes in the eastern Brooks Range, though
this is also expected to diminish by this afternoon. Surface high
pressure north of the coast will support light winds and below
average temperatures through Thursday. Over the Chukchi Coast,
winds will turn southerly Wednesday with the arrival of a weak
front which will quickly dissipate. The main event will be
Thursday as strong south winds and potentially heavy snow are
expected from south facing slopes of the Western Brooks Range and
along the immediate coast to Utqiagvik. Strong southwest winds
will spread east along the coast to reach Kaktovik early Friday.
Blizzard conditions are possible along much of the western Brooks
Range and immediate coast west of Deadhorse. This forecast remains
tricky given the unusual track of the associated slow, so expect
updates the the forecast over the next few days.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A few areas of low clouds and fog will linger this morning mainly
across Kotzebue Sound, but otherwise expect high pressure and
below average temperatures to be the norm through Thursday. A very
weak trough will move onshore early Wednesday, bringing weak
southerly winds and a few snow showers mainly south of the Bering
Strait. Thursday will see a marked increase in southerly winds
across the region. The bulk of the precipitation is expected to
be confined mainly north of the Bering Strait Thursday into early
Friday, though a second shot of moisture is expected to impact
areas farther south late Friday into Saturday. Some details,
particularly snowfall amounts and timing, remain low confidence at
this point.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light snow supported by a slow moving boundary will finally
accelerate east today as high pressure and clearing skies follow
behind. Areas generally east of Fairbanks to Fort Yukon can
expect up to an additional inch of snow before clearing out this
afternoon. A final round of cold is expected to last through
Thursday as widespread low temperatures again drop into the 20s
and 30s below. A warming trend will ensue Friday as temperatures
aloft warm and cloud cover increases. Strong winds over higher
elevations as well as through passes may become a concern later
this weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
A Strong weather system is expected to impact the northwest coast
beginning Thursday. At this point, strong south winds and warmer
temperatures are expected. Thick, extensive sea ice coverage
across the eastern Bering Sea should prevent any coastal flooding
issues, though we will continue to monitor closely.
