Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...

A spring weather pattern will continue to dominate the Northland
through the end of the week as a series of Pacific warm fronts
favorably interacts with a strong upper ridge to bring seasonably
warm temperatures and periods of wet/rainy weather to most of the
region. A potent warm front is already tracking through the
eastern Bering Sea and will begin to impact the region by late
this morning as it eventually races up along the West Coast and
into the Arctic Ocean by Wednesday.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
A shortwave ridge axis currently over the West Coast and Interior
is building and merging with a much stronger Pacific upper ridge
this morning. A deep longwave trough over the Bering and North
Pacific to the west of this ridge is tapping quite a bit of
subtropical moisture, and this is being realized as a potent and
fast moving warm front crossing the eastern Bering Sea. There is
some leftover stratus and fog behind the departing shortwave
trough (which brought widespread rain and some higher elevation
snow) now moving into the Canadian Prairies. Warm temps will
permeate the Northland today as this ridge aloft builds stronger.

Model Discussion...
The numerical weather models are in excellent agreement with the
general pattern regime of very warm, along with wet and stormy at
times, for the Northland through this week. Forecast confidence is
very high.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A fast moving warm front along a low amplitude upper level
impulse will blast north through the Bering Strait this morning
through tonight, reaching the Arctic coast by Wednesday morning.
This low will bring strong east to southeast winds, especially
through Norton and Kotzebue Sound and along all the coastlines.
Expect widespread rain with this leading front, although some snow
will fall along the leading edge before turning to rain from the
Seward Peninsula northward. A more substantial moisture plume will
bring more widespread and heavier rain on Tuesday night and
Wednesday with yet another blast of warm air and rain moving
across the West Coast on Thursday night.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A strong warm front will quickly change winds from westerly to
east southeasterly today as the pressure gradient quickly
tightens. Rain and snow will move across the Brooks Range onto the
North Slope tonight and Wednesday, and this will increase through
Thursday as the frontal zone stalls and a series of wave
disturbances aloft pass over. A cold front will move east on
Thursday, changing precipitation back to all snow along with some
increasingly gusty west winds along the coast.

Eastern and Central Interior...
Upper ridging building in today and tomorrow will bring widespread
very warm days to the Interior as temps soar into the 50s. A
tightening pressure gradient across the Alaska Range and downslope
compressional warming will aid warming aloft, so it is not out of
the realm of possibility that Fairbanks gets darn close to
breaking the record of 58 degrees. With that said, besides high
clouds floating through, it is going to be warm and spring like
today. Attention quickly turns to a subtropical warm front moving
into the Interior from the Pacific. This front will gradually work
east tonight through Thursday, bringing widespread rainfall to
the Interior. Snow levels will be very high (in excess of
4000-5000 feet), so only the very tops of the high interior
mountains will see snow. Given the combination of warming and
rain, expect increasing areas of water ponding and possibly local
urban runoff to be an increasing issue.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
