Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Most of Interior Alaska is under the influence of very quiescent
weather as an upper level ridge builds over the Northland. This
ridge was responsible for the first 40 degree temp of the year in
Fairbanks today, and this will persist and warm as we head into
the next week. Along the boundary of this ridge is where more
active weather is occurring, especially along the western
periphery of the ridge where warm air advection and southerly flow
is advecting moisture into the West Coast. This is supporting a
mix of rain and snow across the Yukon Delta into the southern part
of Norton Sound with light snow northward into the Lisburne
Peninsula.

.DISCUSSION...

Analysis and Upper levels...
An upper level ridge is dominating the upper air pattern over the
state this morning, with shortwave troughs rotating around the
periphery of the ridge. This is bringing snow and blowing snow to
the North Slope along with rain and snow to parts of the West
Coast and Western Arctic/Brooks Range. over the Bering Sea, there
is a stronger and large trough which is acting to both advect
moisture north and builds heights aloft over the state as warm air
advection increases the geopotential heights. This low will be
responsible for supporting more active weather across much of the
Northland today through Monday as it moves eastward.

Model Discussion...
The numerical weather models are in excellent agreement with the
large scale pattern through the end of next week as the pattern
amplifies and returns to an active regime. The next low to move
across the Northland today and Monday is also in good agreement
with good clustering and good depiction of the overall impacts as
rain/snow move across the area. Beyond that, well above average
temps will be the dominant mode as spring returns to the Northland
heading into the next work week.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Rain and snow has already moved into the YK Delta area and into
the Lower Yukon and Norton Sound regions. Coverage of
precipitation will expand rapidly this afternoon as the upper
level shortwave trough over the Bering Sea begins to go negative
tilt and move inland. Expect a mix of rain and snow with all snow
north of the Seward Peninsula. Snow accumulations with this system
will be rather low but widespread, with most areas seeing 1-3" by
the time the low exits on Monday.

A more potent warm front (in terms of the magnitude of warm air
advection) will quickly move up along the West Coast Tuesday,
bringing what will likely be mostly rain to locations below
1000-2000 feet, possibly mixing with snow across Kotzebue Sound
northward.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A front is crossing northeast of the North Slope this morning,
with snow and blowing snow across the region and broad southwest
winds. Periods of light snow will increase across the Brooks Range
this afternoon as a low across the Interior clips the region, and
this will move north into the North Slope on Monday although any
snowfall will be rather light. Mostly dry weather is expected
Tuesday as that low exits east, then a strong warm front is
progged to move into the region on Tuesday night and Wednesday,
bringing another surge of warm air and southerly winds.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Another warm day in store for the Interior today as a ridge of
high pressure aloft dominates. Today will also be cloudier as a
low across the West Coast begins shifting eastward. This will keep
temps above average, but it will also "dampen" how high they could
have gone given the ambient temps aloft. The next low moves in
tonight and will bring a mix of rain and snow to the Interior
(possibly all rain from Fairbanks southward for a brief period).
Any snow accumulations below 2000 feet or so will be rather light
as snow will mix with rain at times which will dramatically lower
the snow ratios, especially during the day on Monday. The low
exits Monday night with Tuesday being another warm day, likely the
warmest day of the spring for many areas in the Interior, as temps
reach or exceed the 50 degree mark.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
