Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Unusually quiet weather for winter time for northern AK as the
storm track shifts back to the south and the Bering Sea for the
time being. A weakening front draped along the North Slope will
continue to bring light snow through this evening then end. A
rather weak "cold air" low in Norton Sound will reach the
northwest Arctic this evening, spreading light snow along its path
along parts of the West Coast. For the Interior, ridging aloft
will continue to build in with increasing Alaska Range gap winds,
but otherwise quiet weather for the Christmas holiday.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
It is a bit of a messy upper level pattern as the region
transitions away from an active storm cycle back to an
Oceanic/Bering Sea storm cycle. In general, upper ridging is
building back in aloft over the Interior with weak upper troughing
over the West Coast. There is a weakening surface low over The
Seward Peninsula quickly moving north, with this low around 994
mb and weakening as it tracks north. Over the North Slope, there
is an elongating and weakening deformation zone which is actually
a good pattern to bring light snow, which it currently is. With
the ridge building in aloft, gusty gap winds have developed in the
AK Range with S 35-45 mph currently, and these will remain through
Christmas. Mid-level temps (850 temps around -9 to -13C) are rather
homogeneous across the entire Mainland which is to be expected given
the weak baroclinic zone as the storm track has shifted south.

Model Discussion...
The numerical models are in excellent agreement through the
weekend. The biggest difference is a strong front expected to move
into the Southwest Coast and Lower Yukon on Sunday afternoon. This
front will bring wintery weather and blowing snow to these areas.
For this forecast, a blend of all models was favored for the
entire period.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Very quiet weather as ridging aloft builds in. Temps will
gradually fall back to normal as inversions redevelop. High clouds
will pass through the flow, with some patchy areas of low stratus
and fog in valleys. Gusty southerly gap winds in the AK Range and a
Tanana Valley Jet (easterly winds) will remain persistent into the
weekend with gusts to 35-50 mph at times.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A weakening low moving north toward Kotzebue Sound is bringing
light snow to the West Coast and this low will continue to move
north into the arctic through tonight, bringing an end to light
snow. A stronger inverted trough will move into the Lower Yukon
and YK Delta tomorrow, bringing heavier snow (2-4") along the warm
frontal band as it moves north into eastern Norton Sound. The
trough will move as far north as the Seward Peninsula then fall
apart on Saturday. Yet another front moves into the Southwest
Coast and Lower Yukon Sunday, and this front may bring more
impactful winter weather. Stay tuned...

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Light snow will come to an end tonight as the associated front
moves offshore into the arctic ocean. Very quiet weather will
persist into the weekend with only some weak disturbances aloft
bringing periodic light snow showers.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
Beginning the extended period forecast on Sunday evening, there
will be a near hurricane force low in the Bering Sea with the
powerful occluded front moving into the Southwest Coast. This
front will bring snow and blowing snow to parts of the West Coast
through Monday as the pattern remains stable and blocked to the
east. This will keep waves of energy moving over the West Coast
and Western Interior through most of the week while the Interior
remains on the southerly flow side of this ridge (the eastern
side). Expect mostly dry and near to slightly above normal temps
for the Interior, along with periods of gusty southerly AK Range
gap winds.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
