...WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 6 PM AKST
WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...Southeast winds 25 to 35 mph, with occasional gusts from
  the south at 50 to 65 mph. 

* WHERE...near Delta Junction.

* WHEN...From midnight tonight to 6 PM AKST Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Strong winds could blow down trees on power lines and
  power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially
  for high profile vehicles. Blowing snow will causes reduced
  visibility and drifts will form. 

* ADDITONAL DETAILS...Winds are expected to be mainly from the
  southeast at 25 to 35 mph, but there will be occasional strong
  gusts from the south at 50 to 65 mph after midnight tonight. 
  The strongest gusts are expected during the day Wednesday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high
profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Another day, more storms. The Pacific firehose pattern remains in
place as one front brings more snow to the Interior while another
Bering low is on track to bring more rain and snow to the West
Coast. Along the North Slope, a tight gradient associated with
the first storm continues to result in blowing snow with the worst
conditions over the Northwest Arctic where combination of snow
and blowing snow resulted in significantly reduced visibility.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
The remnants of a once strong storm over the bering Sea has moved
inland and continues to bring snow to the Interior, although the
upper level trough associated with it is quickly shearing out and
weakening. The next storm is brewing over the Eastern Bering Sea
with the associated inverted trough axis already moving into the
Yukon Delta. This low is associated with a 180 knot jet streak,
and will be the final storm of this very busy and active storm
cycle.

Model Discussion...
The numerical weather models are in excellent agreement with the
general large scale synoptic pattern and impacts. Models fall
apart as the Bering low moves inland and interacts with the strong
negative tilt ridge over the Interior on Thursday and Friday.
However, the impacts are mostly minimal although the NAM is noted
for being the most aggressive in bringing down an arctic trough
and merging it with the Bering low, then forming light widespread
snow over the Interior the latter half of the week. For this
forecast the Hi-Res WRF models were favored in short term, and
the GFS for the latter term.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Snow continues over much of the Interior this afternoon as a front
quickly shifts eastward toward the ALCAN. Snow will end everywhere
this evening, leaving weak high pressure in its wake. A strong
Bering low will begin to induce a strong pressure gradient across
the Alaska Range with winds likely reaching near hurricane force
if not stronger through Isabel Pass and Windy pass. Winds weaken
Thursday morning. Thursday and Friday, cold arctic high pressure
will drop down and result in a cooling trend back closer to
average.

West Coast and Western Interior...
The last storm has moved well inland, and the next storm is
already moving toward Bristol Bay with the inverted trough axis
already moving into the Yukon Delta. Onshore southwest winds
quickly switch to offshore easterly winds this evening, resulting
in rapidly diminishing water levels and high surf over coastal
areas. This next front will bring more oceanic air northward so
expect more mixed precip, with predominantly rain along the coast
north of the Seward Peninsula, with mostly rain over the Lower
Yukon and Yukon Delta. Western Interior areas will also see a mix
of rain with some locally moderate snow accumulations. The front
clears the coast on Wednesday, with a second shortwave trough
moving in from the east stalling out somewhere over the Western
Interior. This will bring widespread light snow accumulations,
likely 2-4" over a 36 hour period. Light snow showers continue
through Friday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
The winter storm for significant blowing snow over the Northwest
Arctic will gradually wind down as winds weaken and falling snow
ends this evening. Elsewhere, blowing snow will continue as east
winds remain gusty into the 35 MPH range, but without significant
falling snow, expect that vis reductions will generally not be
all that bad and will increase after midnight. An arctic trough
will move into the Eastern Arctic on Thursday and Friday, bringing
light snow accumulations to the region.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
The main story of the extended period forecast on Saturday will be
a shift in the storm track to the North Pacific. Thus, the rather
intense storm cycle the region has been in recently will be well
past us as cold high pressure redevelops with periodic light snow
and more normal weather conditions. The Interior looks high and
dry and normal for temps all the way through the weekend into the
middle of next week.
