Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED

.SYNOPSIS...Broad low in the Bering Sea will send a mix of rain
and snow to the West Coast tonight and Friday along with some
breezy conditions along the coast. High pressure over the Yukon
Territory is pushing west to the Bering Strait so mostly clear
through Friday. The exception in the Interior will be the Upper
Tanana Valley where stratus and flurries will hang on through
tonight. The high pressure will rotate northeast and potentially
create some breaks in the stratus Friday night in the Arctic as
flow remains offshore.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...The 22/12Z solutions are in pretty good agreement.
Checking the upper air sites, the the ridge is a bit stronger than
the solutions would have it be and winds are a bit stronger. The
stronger ridge is also slowing down the precipitation moving up
the West Coast. The GFS seems to have the better handle on the
slower precipitation so will be leaning that direction. For the
remainder of the elements will be using a general blend and making
minor changes.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...A 559 dam high has moved over the Western
Interior and will merge with ridging over the Northeast Pacific
Friday. Ridge axis lies from Kodiak Island to Huslia and west of
Shishmaref this afternoon and will lie from Yakutat to Fort Yukon
to Anaktuvuk Pass then west over Cape Lisburne Friday afternoon.
Ridging will persist over the state as one axis exits to the east
and but another branch continues to push northwest over the
Seward Peninsula Friday, then rotates northeast as the ridge
starts to flatten out. A stacked 516 dam low is just southeast of
Adak today and will move to just southwest of the Pribilofs by
Friday evening at 522 dam. The low will continue to move northeast
and by Sunday morning will be over Nunivak Island at 535 dam. In
the Arctic a 514 dam low will move to 80N and the Dateline Friday
morning as flow across the Arctic becomes zonal. The low will move
east over 80N to 600 nm north of Demarcation Point at 510 dam by
Saturday morning. A trough extending southwest from the low will
move over the Northwest Arctic Friday night, and by Saturday
morning will lie across the Arctic and over the Northwest Arctic
Coast. As the trough moves east the ridging over the state
flattens out until the trough moves east of the state. The ridging
will build back north over the AlCan Sunday night, then move east
Monday. The closed low over Nunivak Island will wobble around and
weaken into Monday, then move northeast as a trough. At 850
hpa...Temperatures generally 0C to -10C through the weekend.
Starting Tuesday the -10C isotherm will move south over the state
and by Wednesday morning will be south of the forecast area.

Surface...A 1045 high has set up in the Yukon Territory with high
pressure extending across the state to the Seward Peninsula and
Chukchi Sea with a 1037 mb high in the Upper Yukon Flats. A 1010
mb low has moved east into the Northern Beaufort Sea and the
associated warm front has move across MacKenzie Bay. A weak cold
front lies from the low southwest across the Arctic and will stay
just offshore as it is dragged east. Weak high pressure has moved
over the Western Arctic and will move east across the Arctic to
the Beaufort Sea Friday. Another low will move to the Northwest
Arctic near the Dateline at 1005 mb Friday morning and move east
along 80N to the Beaufort Sea by Saturday morning with the
associated cold front lying southwest across the Arctic to the
Northwest Arctic Coast. The front and low will continue to move
east Saturday and will move into the Canadian Archipelago Sunday
as a 1026 mb high moves to the Northwest Arctic Coast. A 987 mb
low near Adak will move to the Pribilofs by Saturday morning at
999 mb. The low will continue to move northeast and by Sunday
morning will be near Nunivak Island at 1007 mb. The low will fill
and merge with a strong low moving northeast out of the Central
Pacific that will be near Kodiak Island Monday morning.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...The rain extended a bit further
east than expected, but it will be turning back to snow and ending
this evening and overnight. Winds have kicked up a bit stronger
than expected but will be diminishing and turning from the
southeast to south by Friday afternoon. Temperatures will be
cooling.

West Coast and Western Interior...Rain and snow moving north a bit
slower than expected. Rain should begin Early Friday morning in
the Lower Yukon Delta and spread north to the Seward Peninsula
Friday afternoon. Expect rain for most of the area south of the
Seward Peninsula, the exception will be some snow or a mix of rain
and snow in the Nulato Hills. Winds will generally be offshore
along the coast at 10 to 25 mph with the strongest winds near the
capes. Inland winds will be lighter from the northeast to east at
5 to 15 mph. Temperatures warming with high in the mid 30s to
around 40 for all but the Kobuk and Noatak basins where highs will
be in the lower 30s. Lows tonight will be on the cool side as
skies have cleared for most of the area and temperatures will fall
rapidly into the single digits inland.

Central and Eastern Interior...Mostly clear and cool, except for
the Upper Tanana Valley where stratus will continue to hold over
the area with some flurries. Temperatures falling into the single
digits overnight for most areas. Locally temperatures could fall
to 5 below. Winds light and variable.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast Days 4 to 7...A big push of cold air next week,
but before that a strong low will move northeast out of the
Central Pacific and spread a mix of precipitation over the area
Monday and Tuesday. Heavy snow will fall in the Alaska Range, and
in the Interior it looks like a mix of rain and snow at this time
that could create travel problems.
