Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
The warm chinook pattern continues as a barrage of lows pummel the
North Gulf Coast then move inland across the Alaska Range. Temps
barely dropped below 50 degrees overnight this morning at
Fairbanks, which is an indicator of how warm it is. Should
Fairbanks not drop below 45 degrees before midnight, that would
break the record "high" minimum temperature. Moreover, yesterday
was 23 degrees above average for the daily high, which was not a
record (72 was the record). Elsewhere, strong east winds are
developing over the Arctic Coast in response to the warm front
lifting north. Intermittent light rain is sputtering along over
the West Coast and parts of the Western Interior.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
A sprawling upper level trough spans the Bering Sea and the entire
Mainland of Alaska, including the northern Gulf of Alaska. A very
potent shortwave trough is ejecting across the Alaska Range this
afternoon and will continue making inland progress tonight. The
associated surface low is weakening and moving northwest across
the Bristol Bay coastline. Chinook winds are ramping up fast
across the Alaska Range while a TVJ (Tanana Valley Jet) continue
over Delta Junction and parts of the Tanana Valley. Winds will
continue to ramp up this evening and tonight as the surface low
ejects.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Warm and dry is the name of the game as temps continue to stay 15 +
degrees above average. Temps have once again soared into the 60s
over the Interior, with lows barely dropping into the 40s. The
next low is moving across the Alaska Range, and this is enhancing
this pattern, and also pushing stronger chinook winds threough the
Alaska Range as winds have reached 60+ MPH across Antler Creek,
and will continue to rise there and Isabel PAss through tonight.
The High Wind Warnings remain, and it is still expected that winds
will push through into parts of Delta Junction this evening and
tonight.

Winds diminish slowly on Saturday with slightly cloudier but
otherwise continued warm conditions persisting all weekend. The
next low moving into the Gulf of Alaska on Sunday and Monday and
will bring in even more clouds, and graudally cooling temps as the
chinook winds over the Alaska Range abate.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Cloudy and showery weather will continue as another low moves into
the region, with rain persisting through Monday along the coast.
The Interior will slowly dry out by Sunday, but with plenty of
clouds hanging around, temps will remain more normal as the strong
southerly flow abates.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A low moving up along the North Slope will continue to push strong
easterly winds along the coast through this evening before the
front moves offshore and the winds abate. Rain will come with the
front, favoring the western half of the Slope. The front will
stall over the western Slope, thus rain wil, continue then
gradually turn to all snow as a cold front shifts east on Sunday
night and Monday. Over the eastern side of the slope, weakening
winds will allow for the possibility of fog development in place
of the low stratus and strong winds.
