.SYNOPSIS...

An active fall pattern is now in place as the remnants of a once
powerful Pacific warm front are moving northeast along the North
Slope, which is also tracking a weakening front into the Interior
with light rainfall. The front will clear the Arctic Coast this
afternoon bringing a brief reprieve to the strong east-northeast
winds. Right on its heels is another fall storm moving in from
Bristol Bay which will have impacts lasting through Friday as
strong Alaska Range gap winds increase once again (stronger with
this low), more moderate rain spreads into the Western
Interior/Coast before moving along the North Slope Thursday night
through Friday night, with some snow along the Arctic coast by
Friday night.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
Fifth day in a row, and the Bering Sea upper low remains the
dominant large scale weather feature over the region. A shortwave
trough embedded on the periphery of the Bering low is moving north
toward the Bering Strait and North Slope with the associated cold
front stalled over the White Mountains and Tanana Valley. A stout
ridge remains over the Arctic; this is supporting a very strong
easterly pressure gradient over the North Slope where wind gusts
were into the gale force range earlier today. Rainfall amounts today
were moderate with widespread 0.5"+ values over the Western Interior
with some localized 1.00" totals.

Model Discussion...
Numerical models are doing fairly well now with the overall
synoptic pattern as warm front number one lifts towards the North
Slope this morning. The next low is already developing this
morning in the North Pacific, and the models are now getting a
much better handle with this system as it rapidly deepens as it
moves into Bristol Bay before lifting into the Interior on
Thursday and Friday. The trend in the models has been west west
west, as models two days ago had this same low into the Gulf of
Alaska crossing over the Tanana Valley as it moved inland. Now, the
projected low track is from Bristol Bay to the Seward Peninsula,
which will impact rainfall distribution as it now looks like the
West Coast/Western Interior will once again see the greatest
rainfall totals over the next 2.5 days, with little to no rainfall
over the Eastern Interior with the second low. Favored guidance was
the NAM and GFS as the ECMWF was by far the most westward track.
While possible, it represented a large change from the current
forecast, so shifting west and stronger was the main priority for
this forecast as well as increasing AK Range gap winds and North
Slope winds later this week.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light rainfall this morning over the Eastern Interior and Upper
Koyukuk Valley will come to an end by the afternoon as the "cold
front" responsible for the precipitation falls apart. Attention
quickly turns to a developing gale force low which will move into
Bristol Bay then the Western Interior on Thursday and Friday. Deep
layer southerly flow aloft with some cross-barrier Foehn wind
forcing/chinook warming will rapidly increase gap winds through
the favored Alaska Range passes tonight, then peaking on Thursday
as gusts push into the 50-65 MPH range. An upper level secondary
shortwave trough will quickly track to the northeast and will push
winds into Delta Junction and the Tanacross area on Thursday night
and Friday, although these will remain much weaker than the gap
winds with gusts into the 35-40 MPH range. Through this whole
pattern, precipitation with the second low will be mostly
nonexistent as downslope drying will dominate, with any rain
favoring the Upper Koyukuk and Upper Yukon Flats. Cold air advection
on Friday night will drop snow levels into the 2500-3500 foot range
with showers moving into the Interior as the southwest flow aloft
increases behind the leading shortwave trough tracking into the
Yukon.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Rainfall will diminish and become much lighter and more
intermittent today as the accompanying front continues to weaken and
move north. The heaviest rain will continue to favor upslope areas
such as northern Norton Sound coast and mountains, and the Baird
Mountains. Strong southwest winds 20-30 MPH will diminish today, and
any minor water surge/high surf into Norton Sound will diminish this
evening.

Attention quickly turns to a rapidly developing low in Bristol Bay
which will then track north into the Lower Yukon and eventually
Seward Peninsula Thursday and Friday. This will bring more
widespread rain with another .30-1.00" rain expected Thursday
through Saturday. West to northwest winds increase Thursday
night and Friday, advecting in gradually cooler air as snow
levels drop to 2500-3000 feet by the weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Light rain associated with a warm front is already impacting the
region and will gradually weaken and fall apart as the front moves
offshore late this afternoon. This will also bring an end to the
near gale force easterly winds as the front switches the low level
flow to offshore southerly and much lighter overall.

Dry weather will persist through Thursday before another front
moves into the region, this time it will be even stronger and will
have more precipitation associated with it, as well as another
round of strong easterly winds into the 25-35 MPH range on
Thursday night and Friday. Uncertainty still exists with the low
track as it stalls over the North Slope on Friday, but expect
widespread rain gradually turning to a rain/snow mix as northeast
winds advect in cooler air by Friday evening/overnight with snow
levels possibly dropping to the deck in some places, especially
where the heaviest precipitation falls.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...See Special Weather
Statement for current day one hazards in Norton Sound.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7..
Beginning the extended period forecast on Saturday, there will be
a broad upper level trough over the entire region spanning the
Bering Sea to the ALCAN, through the Gulf of Alaska and along the
North Slope. Unsettled weather will be in place with the main
areas of precipitation over the North Slope and the West Coast,
with more intermittent and showery weather over the Central and
Eastern Interior. Snow levels will likely be dropping to near sea
level along the North Slope with values around 2500-3000 feet over
the remainder of the Mainland. Showery weather persists through
Sunday before a gradual drying trend develops. There is
increasing confidence that a deep low will track into the Gulf of
Alaska midweek, and this will usher in an strong offshore
pressure gradient which tends to result in drying and cooler
conditions. This will represent a large shift in the overall
pattern as the Pacific storm track shifts south of the Mainland
once again.

.HYDROLOGY...
Expect more moderate rainfall of 0.3-1.00" over the West Coast and
Western Interior up to the Baird Mountains Thursday through
Saturday. This will be on top of the past 2 day totals of
.50-1.50-". Rivers are expected to gradually rise but no flooding
is anticipated as rivers are not high to begin with. Elsewhere, no
concerns expected.

...Elevated Surf through Today Across Norton Sound and the Bering
Strait...

South winds of 25 to 35 MPH will cause elevated surf along south
and west facing coasts across Norton Sound to the Bering Strait.
The winds and elevated surf will continue into this evening.

Minor beach erosion can be expected, and objects left on the
beach may be washed away. Residents are encouraged to move
possessions inland from the beach.
