pressure will build N over Norton Sound this morning with a 1028
mb high near Emmonak. A 993 mb low will persist in the Western
Bering Sea as the high moves to the Arctic and a 1026 mb high 
center develops in the Chukchi Sea then moves NW over the 
Chukotsk Peninsula.

High pressure will hold on east of 170W with a 1027 mb center 
over the Seward Peninsula this morning. The center will move over 
Point Hope at 1025 mb this afternoon, then merge with high 
pressure over the Arctic. A 1020 mb high will develop over the 
Northern Chukotsk Peninsula tonight, while a 990 mb low moves to 
Adak. The low will move E to 200 nm S of Cold Bay as it deepens to
978 mb, and a inverted trough will develop over the West Coast 
Sun.

.SYNOPSIS...

A cloudy and showery weather pattern encompasses most of the
Mainland today. Temperatures are actually running slightly below
average, but this current pattern did bring in some much needed
rainfall to parts of the Interior, along with some locally heavy
rain across the Alaska Range. This pattern will persist through
tomorrow and then gradually warm through the end of the week.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
A moderately strong blocking high centered over the North Slope is
dominating the upper air pattern. "Easterly" waves disturbances
rotating around the underside of the ridge are responsible for the
extensive clouds, cooler temps, and showery weather regime across
most of the Mainland today. Otherwise, extensive stratus and fog
reside over the North Slope with some clearing over the Fortymile
area where upper ridging is reasserting itself behind the
aforementioned easterly wave moving into the Western Interior/West
Coast.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Showers and a possible isolated thunderstorm over the Interior
will be possible late this afternoon and evening as an "easterly"
wave traverses the region. On Wednesday, cold air advection
associated with a trough over the Bering Strait will steepen low
level lapse rates, so more showers and inland isolated thunderstorms
will be possible. Thursday will gradually dry out and warm up as
ridging aloft builds in and low level flow becomes north-northeasterly.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Showers and afternoon isolated thunderstorms will be possible
along the Brooks Range the next three days. The most active day
looks to be tomorrow afternoon as a shortwave trough moves across
the Range from the south, with some of these showers spilling over
to the Slope. Other than that, the usual persistent low stratus
and fog will continue along the Arctic Coast.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Rain showers with isolated afternoon thunderstorms will be
possible each afternoon, although shower coverage will be greatest
today with a gradual decrease Wednesday and Thursday and Friday. A
gradual increase in temps will also occur as upper ridging slowly
rebuilds and low level flow turns northeasterly Thursday evening
and increases Friday. By Friday expect temps to rebound back above
average.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A remnant thermal trough will support isolated/slight chance of
thunderstorms today and Thursday afternoon across the Interior,
although a better chance will occur Thursday as a shortwave trough
moves across the Western/Central Interior. However, instability
today and Thursday is rather meager and thunderstorms will be of
the wet variety. The pattern begins to change Thursday as upper
ridging builds back in and temps gradually rise above average over
most of the Interior. By Friday and Saturday, dry northeast winds
will develop and will push temps up into the 70s and min RH
values back down into the 20s. Isolated thunderstorms will
continue to be a threat Thursday and Friday, as well.

.HYDROLOGY...
Recent rainfall combined with continued snowmelt across the higher
elevations of the White Mountains are causing sharp rises on
streams and small rivers draining the White Mountains including
the Chena and Salcha Rivers. Some rivers and streams will rise to
near bankfull but currently no flooding is expected. River levels
will begin falling Wednesday and Thursday.

North Slope Rivers are starting to break up, and with rising
freezing levels, expect Brooks Range snowmelt to increase the next
several days. Will need to monitor North Slope Rivers closely
this week.
