Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Relatively quiet weather is expected today for the Interior and
the West Coast of Alaska. A series of weather system will move
from the Gulf of Alaska into the southern Bering Sea tonight
through the weekend. The first system will bring gusty east to
northeasterly winds tonight and Wednesday for areas to the south
of the Brooks Range as a front moves north over the state. Gusty
easterly winds will develop along the Arctic Coast Wednesday
night as the aforementioned front reaches the Arctic Coast. Strong
southerly gap winds are expected to develop in the Alaksa Range
Wednesday night into Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...
The 00 UTC model suite generally initialized well when compared
to observations. The models are generally depicting the same
general synoptic scale pattern through the weekend there are
still some differences in the placement and strength of the lows
that will be moving through the Gulf of Alaska late in the work
week.

Aloft, at 500 mb, A broad trough is currently in place over the
Bering Sea. During the day today, we expect a ridge to begin to
build over the eastern Interior as a 517 dam low moves northward
in the Gulf of Alaska. This low will move into the southeast Bering
Sea late Wednesday, where it will remain quasi-stationary into
Saturday. A series of lows will will move from the Gulf of Alaska
into the southeast Bering Sea and merge with the aforementioned
low Thursday into Saturday. On Sunday, a low moving to the
northeast through the North Pacific will merge with the low in the
southwest Bering Before moving into the Gulf of Alaska. Mainly
southerly flow is expected over the Interior late today into the
weekend. By tomorrow afternoon, H850 temperatures over the
Interior will rise into the 5 to 10 Celsius range.

Central and Eastern Interior: Fog is currently occuring around
Fairbanks. We expect the fog to dissipate by mid-morning. Current
radar imagery indicates that some light precipitation is falling
early this morning to the east of Fairbanks along an old frontal
boundary. Any precipitation is expected to diminish this afternoon
as a ridge builds in aloft. Dry conditions are expected from this
afternoon into Wednesday afternoon. A front moving to the north
will bring chances for rain to areas north of Fairbanks Wednesday
night into early Thursday. After this front moves through, mostly
dry conditions are expected through the weekend. Southerly flow
aloft will help to bring a warming trend to the Interior through
Thursday. Thursday looks to be the warmest day of the week, with
temperatures reaching the low 60s in some locations (including
Fairbanks). Temperatures will cool somewhat for Friday into the
weekend; however, temperatures will remain above normal. Gusty
southerly gap winds have been observed in the eastern Alaska Range
overnight. We expect these gap winds to diminish this morning.
Breezy east to northeasterly winds are expected to develop on
Wednesday as a front moves north across the Interior. The
strongest winds on Wednesday will be in the Tanana Valley,
especially near Delta Junction, as well as the higher terrain
north of Livengood. Breezy easterly to northeasterly winds will
continue at times across the Interior into the weekend. On
Wednesday night, the pressure gradient across the Alaska Range
will tighten up resulting in strong, southerly gap wind
developing. Winds will likely gust in excess of 50 mph in the
eastern Alaska Range late Wednesday night into Thursday. Winds
will diminish Thursday afternoon. Another (potentially stronger)
round of gap winds is possible Friday night into Saturday as the
gradient across the range tightens up again; however, the models
still differ on the details of the system that will drive this
event.

West Coast and Western Interior: The next system of interest
comes Wednesday as a strong low moves from the Gulf of Alaska to
the Alaska Peninsula. This system will spin a front northward,
bringing gusty northeasterly winds to the West Coast and the
Western Interior. Winds with system may approach low end Gales in
the northern Bering and across Norton Sound. Rain chances will
move into the Lower Yukon and Yukon Delta Wednesday afternoon in
association with this front. Another low looks to move from the
Gulf of Alaska into Bristol on Friday. This system looks to be a
little bit deeper than the system on Wednesday and thus, has the
potential to bring stronger winds to the northern Bering Sea and
the Southern Chukchi Sea and adjacent coastal areas; however,
there is also still some uncertainty in the timing, placement and
strength of this system at the moment. As this system moves
through it will bring rainfall to areas along the coast, with the
heaviest rainfall expected in the Yukon Delta and the lower Yukon
Valley. The low will continue to move north on Saturday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Stratus and fog will persist along the coast today. A weather
front moving to the north will bring chances for snow to the
Brooks Range on Wednesday night and an mixture of rain and snow to
the Arctic Coast on Thursday. This front will also bring strong
easterly winds to the Arctic Coast on Thursday. Winds will
dissipate on Thursday evening as the front pushes north of the
coast. Another round of breezy easterly winds is expected along
the coast Friday night into early Saturday.

...Very Windy and Warm Along the Alaska Range Through This
Weekend...

Winds are expected to increase tonight along the Alaska Range,
and remain windy through the weekend. Several chinook events
occuring Wednesday night and Thursday, and again on Friday could
cause strong winds. The chinook winds will cause afternoon
temperatures to reach the upper 50s and lower 60s along the north
side of the Alaska Range Wednesday through Friday.

Near Delta Junction, south winds could gust as high as 40 to 50
mph on Wednesday night and Thursday, and again on Friday.

Through Alaska Range Passes, south winds could gust as high as 50
to 60 mph on Wednesday night and Thursday, and again on Friday.
