The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has cancelled the Red
Flag Warning. 

Lightning activity across the Interior has diminished this 
evening. Isolated thunderstorms will continue over the next couple
hours.

.SYNOPSIS...
Summer is alive and well across Interior Alaska for this weekend
as an Interior ridge builds into the region from the Yukon
Territory. Temperatures will continue to warm above average across
most of the region. This warming will increase atmospheric
instability, along with a favorable easterly flow aloft, for an
active region of thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday. The focus for
this thunderstorm pattern will stretch from Fortymile east to the
Alaska Range all the way to the Western Interior and Y-K Delta.
Locally heavy rainfall, hail, and strong winds will be a threat
across these areas, with the possibility of fast stream rises
across the Alaska Range, especially this afternoon and evening if
thunderstorms train over the same areas.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
The upper levels are in transition as an upper ridge axis builds
in from the Yukon into the middle portion of the Mainland from
Fortymile into the Western Interior. A closed upper level low is
finally exiting the state as it cross over the Arctic coastline
this morning. there is a subtle low amplitude shortwave trough
axis evident on satellite imagery crossing the Gulf Coast into
Southcentral Alaska this morning, and that feature will be the
focus for enhanced thunderstorms this afternoon and evening from
the Alaska Range west to the Western Interior.

West Coast and Western Interior...
An active day is expected this afternoon and evening from the
Yukon Delta north to the Nulato Hills, and west to Galena and the
Kuskokwim Mountains. An "easterly wave" disturbance aloft will
move over this region, bringing a shot of showers in the morning,
and then a regional outbreak of thunderstorms in the afternoon and
early evening. The focus for the strongest thunderstorms will
stretch from Mcgrath toward the Lower Yukon Valley before the low
forms into a larger area of widespread rainfall over the Delta.
Some thunderstorms may even move off the coast of the Yukon Delta
and into Norton Sound in the evening.

Sunday and Monday, expect continued gradual warming along with
isolated to widely scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms,
focused across the entire Western Interior and higher terrain.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
An upper low will exit off coast this morning, leaving most
showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening over the
Brooks Range. Thereafter, a persistent pattern will develop of
onshore northeast winds the next couple days, bringing dry
conditions back as well as possible stratus and fog.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Interior summer continue for this weekend as temps remain above
average as an Interior ridge asserts itself. Underneath this
ridge are easterly wave disturbances passing to the west (hence,
"easterly"). Today will be an active thunderstorm day as one of
these waves tracks across the Alaska Range and another one cross
FortyMile and the Tanana Valley. Thunderstorms with possible
heavy rainfall will be possible from the White Mountains south
today, with the best chance for locally heavy rain over the Alaska
Range and Fortymile. Recreators and individuals in these areas
should be on alert for possible rapid stream rises in these areas.

Sunday will see more showers and thunderstorms with chances
lifting further north into the tinder dry Yukon Flats and Upper
Koyukuk Valley. The best chances look to the over Central
Interior/Upper Koyukuk with more isolated activity elsewhere.
Isolated thunderstorms will continue into Monday along with above
average temperatures.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
The name of the game this weekend will be Interior upper ridging
and active easterly wave disturbances tracking along the southern
periphery of the ridge. This pattern is a classic wet thunderstorm
pattern with the potential for a lot of lightning and locally
heavy rainfall. Today looks quite active as a strong easterly
wave will track across the Alaska Range northwest through the
Lower Yukon and over the Kuskokwim Mountains into the Nulato
Hills. Another potential area of widespread thunderstorms is over
Fortymile and the far Eastern Alaska Range. Another day of warmest
temps will occur over the Yukon Flats. Sunday thunderstorm
threats spread north over the Yukon Flats into the Upper Koyukuk
Valley where the local fuels are rather dry. A warm (not hot)
thunderstorm pattern will persist into early next week.

.HYDROLOGY...
Heavy rainfall is possible today across all of the Alaska Range
and Fortymile area. Some storms may train over the same areas and
this could cause rapid runoff resulting in rapid stream rises in
these higher terrain areas. Local residents and recreators in
these areas should be on alert for these threats today and this
evening as thunderstorms move through.
