Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Weather over the Interior will continue to be relatively quiet
and will continue to cool to near normal temperatures by the end
of the week and will feature periods of clouds and a little rain
in the Southeast Interior and the Koyukuk River Basin. Snow may
mix with the rain even at valley levels by the middle of the week.
The West Coast and Western Interior will continue to be the most
active area as trough remaining over the areas with ongoing light
rain and showers diminishing this afternoon before the next strong
weather front moves to the coast Tuesday night and Wednesday. The
Arctic will remain cloudy with some light snow and onshore flow
with winds increasing to 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will be
trending down across the area.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft...at 500 mb a deep and broad longwave trough extends from
near the North Pole south over Mainland Alaska while a weakening
longwave ridge remains over the Yukon and British Columbia. A deep
upper level low pressure system will push east into the Western
Bering Sea on Tuesday and into the Central Bering Sea on
Wednesday. A weak ridge ahead of the upper level low will push
onto the West Coast of Alaska Tuesday night and Wednesday. The
upper level low will push southeast into the Eastern Bering Sea
late Wednesday and Thursday and will push southeast over the AK
Peninsula on Friday.

On the surface...A 987 mb low near Yakutat continues to weaken and
push northeast into the southern Yukon while a ridge over the
Central Bering Sea and Siberia pushes east today. As the ridge
builds and pushes east a trough along the West Coast responsible
for ongoing rain along the West Coast and Western Interior and
Snow over the Western North Slope will push eastward and weaken.
a 998 mb low near the McKenzie Delta will continue to weaken and
drift to the southeast.

A 988 mb low currently southwest of Kamchatka will deepen to 976
mb as it passes south of Kamchatka Tuesday morning and will
deepen further to around 965 mb as it passes into the Western
Bering Sea Wednesday evening and into the Central Bering Sea on
Wednesday. A strong front rotating around this low will push over
St Lawrence Island Wednesday morning and over the West Coast
through the day Wednesday. Expect strong winds and periods of
rain as this front approaches. Wind gusts to 55 mph are expected
on St Lawerence Island and to around 50 mph are expected elsehwere
along the coast. Elevated water levels are possible along the West
Coast as this front approaches.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Northerly onshore winds  will
persist, so not expecting much change as fog will be moving in
and stratus will continue to hold on. Better chance of light snow
across the area and with the north flow heavier snow in the Brooks
Range. Low that is parked near MacKenzie Bay will produce
enhanced snow east of Deadhorse. Temperatures trending down.

West Coast and Western Interior...The trough over the coast that
is producing ongoing rain will continue to weaken and then push
inland today as high pressure moves over the Area. Expect some
morning fog across the area Tuesday clearing by afternoon. A
strong low moving into the Bering Sea will send a front to the
coast late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning bringing more
rain to the area. As the low in the Bering Sea moves east Tuesday
winds will sharply increase on St Lawrence Island to gusting
around 55 mph. Temperatures will be cooling.

Central and Eastern Interior...Light rain continues to push into
the Southeast Interior as a low that moved northeast out of the
Gulf of Alaska into the Yukon Territory continues to push north
and east. Expect precip to remain southeast of Dot Lake. Clouds
will spread north and west over most of the Interior today. Winds
generally light and variable. Temperatures will continue to slowly
cool with scattered rain showers mixing with snow at valley level
by mid week.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Temperatures will be trending
down across the area. It looks like a snowy week across the
Arctic as onshore flow will prevail and with the open water
accumulations may be significant along the Brooks Range. The
Interior will see a mix of clouds and sun with no significant
precipitation expected, while on the West Coast rain will be the
primary story with some snow mixing in overnight from the Seward
Peninsula north.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Some elevated surf
expected on St Lawrence Island, the Lower Yukon Delta Coast, and
outer Norton Sound Wednesday but at this point it looks like it
will not be of significant impact.
