Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...

The region is under the influence of a classic chinook warming
pattern as a series of lows from the Pacific tracks inland across
the Alaska Range. This has pushed Interior temperatures well above
average, and this will continue into the weekend. The next low to
bring chinook warming to the Interior will also bring very high
winds to the Alaska Range Passes, and some of those winds will
move into the lower elevations such as Delta Junction.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
There is a large upper level trough over the Bering Sea, and this
feature is anchoring a deeper Bering-Pacific trough pattern with
the next low in line moving north into the Gulf of Alaska this
afternoon. Embedded within the flow is a low amplitude wave moving
north through the flow, and this is inducing a moderate pressure
gradient along the Alaska Range, along with continued downslope
chinook warming which has pushed temps 10+ degrees above average
for most of the Interior. The chinook pattern will persist into
the weekend as the next low moving into the Gulf moves inland on
Friday and Saturday, bringing continued warming and strong gap
winds out of the Alaska Range.

Central and Eastern Interior...
High and dry weather continues as strong fronts cross the Alaska
Range, resulting in chinook warming well into the upper 50s to low
60s. This is 15+ degrees above the normal highs for early
October. The next powerful chinook front is coming into the Gulf
and will cross the Alaska Range Friday and Friday night, pushing
southerly gusts to hurricane force across the Alaska Range, and
gusts into the 70 MPH range as far north as Delta Junction. As a
result, high wind warnings will be issued with this forecast
package for those areas. Elsewhere, the strong downslope shadow
will keep the Interior dry with periodic bouts of high clouds with
the exception of a few sprinkles over the far western Central
Interior and Yukon Flats (west/north of the White Mountains).
Expect continued well above average temps to continue through the
weekend.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Showers and breezy conditions will persist over the West Coast and
Lower Yukon through tonight as a weakening front moves offshore. A
stronger front will move into the region tonight with the remaining
low moving into the region through Sunday morning, bringing
widespread showers and clouds. Temperatures will gradually cool
through the weekend as the overall low level flow switches from
southeast to southwesterly.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A strong warm front will cross the Brooks Range, resulting in
increasing easterly winds with gusts to gale force along the
Arctic Coast on Friday. Periodic rain showers will be possible as
this front crosses, but precip will be very light. Otherwise,
normal stratus and fog will continue to be a persistent threat.
