Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A drastic pattern change will begin Monday across Northern Alaska
as a large low moves into the Bering, bringing a potentially
significant winter storm to the West Coast and Western Interior.
This storm will also aid in the development of strong southerly
gap winds through Alaska Range Passes and strong winds along the
Tanana River. Warmer temperatures will surge north, initially
across the Southern Interior Monday night then north to the
Arctic Coast by Wednesday. In the meantime, light snow is falling
across the Central Interior, from Tanana east to Fairbanks, as a
low moves into Alaska near Prince William Sound with an occluded
front draped across the Interior. Snow chances will diminish and
push east through today as the low weakens and moves into Canada.
Cold temperatures, coupled with gusty winds over Northwest Alaska,
are creating very cold wind chills this morning and will improve
today as winds decrease over the Interior.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
At the surface, a weak low moving into Prince William Sound will
spread light snow into the Central Interior and then into the
Eastern Interior this afternoon as the low and associated
occluded front tracks east. A weak trough in the Bering Sea will
continue to produce light snow from the Bering Strait south across
St. Lawrence Island into this evening. High pressure over the
high Arctic is relinquishing its grip on the weather for Northern
Alaska today. Attention then shifts to a strong low, sub 960 mb,
moving into the Bering Sea Monday. This storm will feed ample
moisture into the West Coast and Western Interior, as front
rotates around the low into the YK Delta and then moves north up
the coast, potentially bringing significant snowfall Monday night
into Tuesday. Snow moving north coupled with strengthening winds
for St. Lawrence Island and the YK Delta, may produce blizzard
conditions by Monday evening. In addition, a strong gradient will
develop over the Alaska Range, increasing southerly gap winds
through passes and creating a Tanana Valley Jet. This system will
also be responsible for bringing a surge of much warmer
temperatures into Northern Alaska, initially across the Southern
Interior Monday night then north to the Arctic Coast by
Wednesday.

Models converge on a solution that shows a strong low moving into
the Bering Sea by Monday morning, but diverge on the strength of
the main low. So, with this morning's forecast package, we leaned
on the GFS as it reflects a deeper low.

Aloft, at 500 mb, models initialize well with a trough over much
of Northern Alaska. A shortwave will move through the Central and
Eastern Interior today, weakening this afternoon as it moves into
Canada. A ridge will build into Western Alaska Monday morning
ahead of a deep 480 dam (decameter) low moving into the Southern
Bering and will remain quasi-stationary over the Bering through
Tuesday. The ridge builds north and east over Eastern Alaska and
the Yukon on Tuesday. This will bring strong southerly winds aloft
across the Alaska Range, aiding in the development of strong gap
winds, and brings much warmer temperatures to most of Northern
Alaska by Wednesday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A weak trough draped over the North Slope will remain through
Tuesday, keeping low ceilings and the potential for flurries
along the Beaufort Sea Coast. Winds will ease today, easing the
affects of any blowing and drifting snow, along with the cold wind
chills. Cold temperatures have settled in, especially along the
Arctic Plain, this morning. Wind increase slightly Monday, with
cold temperatures in place, wind chill values plummet Monday into
Monday night. Then, temperatures will moderate drastically
Tuesday as much warmer temperatures pushes into the region as
southerly flow develops over the region due to a ridge building
over the Interior.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Winds easing today, with the strongest winds hanging on just
offshore near Point Hope. Otherwise, relatively benign weather
conditions over much of the region as ridging builds in ahead of
a large storm moving into the Bering Sea Monday morning. A weak
trough will linger over the Bering Strait south to St. Lawrence
Island today, continuing to bring blowing snow and snow to St.
Lawrence, and diminishing tonight. Attention then shifts to
Monday through Tuesday, where a strong low will move into the
Bering Sea. This low will bring the potential for a significant
winter storm to much of the West Coast and Western Interior, with
heavy snow, strong winds, freezing rain for the Southern Western
Interior, and blizzard conditions for St. Lawrence Island and the
YK Delta late Monday into Tuesday. Strong wind with snow and
blowing snow, creating blizzard conditions, will spread north
along the West Coast Monday night into Tuesday, bringing low
visibilities. Expect 4 inches of snow for most areas south of the
Bering Strait with up to 7 inches on the east side of the Nulato
Hills. At this time, winds are expected to remain offshore, which
will limit any coastal flooding concerns.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Radar returns this morning show light snow falling over the
Fairbanks Area, this will gradually diminish through this
afternoon with the associated front weakening and moving east.
Snow accumulations of around one inch expected through tonight.
Otherwise, temperatures will remain steady this morning with the
increased cloud cover and light snow across the area. Winds will
decrease through the day, easing the affects of cold wind chills.
Temperatures will fall again Sunday night as a quick shot of
arctic air moves through before a big changes occur Monday, as an
upper level ridge moves over the region bringing a significant
warm up on Tuesday. Very strong south gap winds are expected to
develop in Alaska Range Passes Monday night and continue into
Tuesday as a strong Chinook moves into the area, keeping the
Fairbanks free of any precipitation. Strong inversions will likely
develop over the interior on Monday and Tuesday as temperatures
warm dramatically over the hills, but will be slower to warm in
Valleys where arctic air will remains trapped.

Coastal Hazard Potential for Days 3 and 4...
No concerns at this time.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 to 7...
Beginning the extended period on Wednesday, model concensus shows
an upper level trough parked over the Bering Sea with an
associated large low at the surface, keeping conditions unstable
over the West Coast and Western Interior. This complex will
remain quasi-stationary through Friday and move north as another
large low moves into the Southern Bering on Saturday. Lows will
develop and ride up the east side of the trough into Prince
William Sound on Wednesday through Friday, spreading moisture
north into the Central and Eastern Interior.
