.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow will persist across the West Coast from the Seward
Peninsula south through Sunday afternoon. Visibility may be
reduced at times as gusty east winds linger across the region.
Cold wind chills will continue for the Selawik Valley and
Kotzebue Sound coast, as well as across higher elevations of the
Interior through this afternoon. A more potent system will impact
the Y-K Delta beginning late Sunday into Monday, packing heavy
snow and gusty winds. Much warmer temperatures can be expected
statewide and the system continues east through Tuesday. Strong
south winds will cause a Chinook to develop north of the Alaska
Range early Monday into Tuesday.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft 500 mb...
Weak ridging dominates the Central and Eastern Interior. A
weak shortwave lies across the West Coast, emanating from a
decaying low northwest of St. Matthew Island. A longwave trough
encompassing much of the central and western Bering is anchored
by a closed low tracking east towards Amchitka. This system will
continue to deepen as it tracks toward the Southwest Coast Monday.
The ridge ahead of this low will amplify considerably, causing
strong southerly flow aloft across the Interior Monday into
Tuesday. However, the longwave trough will become negatively
tilted late Monday, causing the low to separate and meander around
the Y-K Delta as it becomes increasingly occluded. This is
causing some inconsistencies among model guidance, with
differences in strength and placement evident by late Monday.
Overall, this early occlusion should keep the system relatively
anemic compared to what could have been. Temperatures will
certainly be warmer, though above freezing temperatures are not
expected, except locally in and north of the Alaska Range, where
strong downsloping is expected.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Winds have moderated along the coast, but continue to be gusty
through the eastern Alaska Range causing a Wind Chill Advisory to
remain in effect for that area. Temperatures will maintain a very
slow warming trend through Tuesday before the arrival of a weather
front from the southwest ushers in much warmer temperatures for
the mid week. Light snow will accompany the front and will persist
along the coast into early Wednesday. High pressure will again
build over the Chukchi Sea Thursday, causing temperatures to
return to seasonably cool levels.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A front associated with weakening low pressure northwest of St.
Matthew Island will bring light snow to the immediate coast from
the Seward Peninsula south, as well as the lower Yukon Valley.
Up to an additional inch of snow is expected with this system
before it dissipates this evening. The next system will impact the
Y-K Delta late Sunday, then track north up the coast into
Tuesday. Despite becoming quite occluded by Tuesday, the initial
front is expected to contain heavy snow as it moves rapidly north.
Gusty east to southeast winds are also expected, so near blizzard
conditions are possible at times late Monday into Tuesday as the
front tracks north. Light snow will linger behind the front,
adding to the storm totals through Wednesday. Storm total
accumulation of around 6 to 10 inches is expected for much of the
Yukon and Kuskokwim Valleys north to the central and western
Brooks Range. The immediate coast will see around 3 to 6 inches in
total through Wednesday. Winter Weather Advisories have been
issued primarily along the coast for snow and blowing snow. Winter
Storm Warnings are in effect for the Yukon Valley for heavy snow.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Dominant high pressure and an easterly gradient will support
continued cold temperatures and hazardous wind chills through
early Monday. Strong southerly winds aloft brought on by the
Bering Sea low will cause a strong Chinook event to develop Monday
into Tuesday. Above average temperatures can be expected across
the region into Wednesday. Additionally, strong winds through
Alaska Range passes will become an issue Monday, so High Wind
Watches are in effect. Easterly Tanana Valley Jet winds may
support cold wind chills for a brief window of time Sunday into
Monday near Delta Junction before the arrival of the full Chinook
and warmer temperatures.
