A 986 mb low 200 nm W of Point Lay will move to just N of 
Wainwright this evening, and over Utqiagvik Sun morning as a
trough of low pressure persists just N of the coast. High pressure
N of 75N will push S as a 1017 mb high moves to 500 N of 
Utqiagvik Sun morning, and to 400 nm N of Point Lay by Mon morning
at 1024 mb with high pressure extending SE to MacKenzie Bay.

.SYNOPSIS...
Major winter storm is moving inland along the West Coast. This
storm is also bringing coastal surge to the West Coast and parts
of the Northwest Arctic. Snow will move inland tonight with
moderate to heavy snow for most of the Interior, although less as
you move toward the ALCAN. Nonetheless, impacts will be far and
wide as this storm rolls through the Mainland through Friday
night. The next storm moves into the region late weekend with more
heavy snow potential.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
The main weather feature dominating the landscape is a powerful
956 hpa low over the northwest Bering Sea with the associated warm
occlusion moving inland along the West Coast. Blizzard conditions
are occuring across many locations, especially from Norton Sound
northward where cold air is continuing to get funneled out to the
coast from the Interior. Many locations are blowing 45-65 mph
along the coast, as well. Over the Interior, cold arctic air
remains with many locations remaining well below zero.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Cold arctic air remains entrenched, but this will gradually scour
out as a powerful front currently over the West Coast moves inland
tonight. This will bring heavy snow to parts of the Interior
including the Fairbanks NSB. Strong southwest winds will transport
the snow into the Interior, thus blowing snow is also going to be
a concern for highway summits along the Steese/Elliott Highways.
Given the warmth of this storm, most areas will see just snow, but
there is a chance some light freezing rain may accompany this snow
at times, mainly west of Fairbanks across the Central Interior,
although some light freezing drizzle can't be ruled out anywhere.

Snow begins to wane on Friday night with light snow favoring
higher elevations by Saturday. Much warmer temps will also move in
as they push above average. Another storm is expected to move in
on Sunday morning through Monday, bringing more snow, possibly
heavy, for parts of the Interior.

West Coast and Western Interior...
The long awaited major storm is moving inland this afternoon.
Blizzard conditions are occurring along parts of the West Coast
from Norton Sound northward, with a changeover to rain across the
Yukon Delta. Strong southeast winds of 55-70 mph will abate
somewhat this evening as the front moves inland, but will then
switch to strong southwest winds behind it. The strongest winds
will be along the coast and across Saint Lawrence Island lasting
into Saturday as the low moves up the Bering Strait. Warmer air
moving in will change more locations over to rain/snow with some
pockets of freezing rain across the Yukon Valley. Elsewhere, heavy
snow will continue with areas of a 12" or more across the Western
Brooks Range and Kobuk/Noatak Valleys. Coastal flooding and storm
surge will also be an issue as the southwest winds develop, with
coastal flood warnings remaining in effect for most coastal areas
through Saturday morning/afternoon.

As this storm winds down on Saturday, the very next storm is
expected to move into the Interior on Saturday afternoon through
Sunday, bringing more snow with some mixed rain/snow freezing rain
possible.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A storm force front is along the Northwest Coast, but this will
weaken in place then drift eastward as a much weaker frontal
system. It will bring gusty south winds through Saturday night,
along with areas of blowing and drifting snow in the favored gaps
across the Brooks Range. Periodic bands of snow showers will be
possible, with the heaviest snow over the crest of the Brooks
Range. With the deep low moving into the Bering Strait, elevated
water levels will come with it from Utqiagvik westward Friday
night into Saturday night.
