.SYNOPSIS...
Conditions in the Interior will continue to improve over the next
few days with the light rain in the Central and Eastern Interior
tapering off tonight. Expect clearing skies tomorrow and Thursday
over the Central and Eastern Interior. A front will bring strong
westerly flow and blizzard conditions in falling and blowing snow
to the northeastern Arctic Coast tonight and last through tomorrow
night. Otherwise, ongoing melt off over the Interior will slow
down as temperatures cool below freezing beginning tonight and
lasting through the rest of the week.

.DISCUSSION...
The 21/12z model suite initialized well against the 12z surface
analysis and verified well against the 18z surface analysis. Model
spread remains minimal in the short range and is reasonable
through the end of the week and into next weekend.

Aloft at 500 mb a deep trough extending southwest over mainland
Alaska from a 502 dam low over Banks Island will continue dig
south and west over Northern Alaska through the middle of the week
and then push south and east as the upper level low pushes north
and east in the the Canadian High Arctic over the weekend. An
upper level high pressure system will build east over the Bering
Strait and West Coast Wednesday and Thursday and over the Western
and Central Interior Thursday and Friday. This will produce a
drying trend and slightly cooler temperatures over much of
Northern Alaska through the end of the week.

On the surface, a weak front stretching east to west from the
Yukon and into the Central and Eastern Interior will slowly slide
east throughout tonight and will continue to weaken. Light rain
associated with this feature will continue to diminish tonight.
High pressure along the Western North Slope combined with a low
pressure system dropping south over the Eastern North Slope will
will bring strong west winds, with snow and blowing snow to the
eastern Arctic Coast late tonight. The low pressure will move
quickly east, with snow continuing along the North Slope going
into Thursday morning. Otherwise, strong high pressure situated
over Siberia will leave quiet conditions along the West Coast
going into the later portions of the week.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light rain will diminish over the Central and Eastern Interior
tonight. Relatively cloudy conditions will continue into tomorrow
before high pressure building into the area will allow skies to
clear by Thursday. Temperatures will cool slowly over the next
several days and as a result, expect melting snow to slow as
nighttime temperatures drop below freezing and no rain expected. A
ice jam has developed on the Chena river near the confluence of
Hunts Creek at mile 26 of Chena Hot Springs Road and is producing
minor flooding. Other reports have come in with small streams,
creeks, and sloughs beginning to see meltwater buildup and minor
flooding in places. Continue to use caution upon going onto the
rivers as melt off has begun the process of weakening the river
ice. Snow melt off will slow in the coming days as temperatures
cool and nighttime temperatures dip below freezing.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Low to mid-level stratus along with light snow will continue along
the North Slope this evening. A low pressure system moving south
and east over the Eastern Arctic Slope tonight will produce strong
winds and snow over the Eastern Arctic Coast tonight. Expect low
visibilities in blowing snow from Prudhoe Bay east and blizzard
conditions in zone 204. A strong gradient along the Brooks Range
will develop Wednesday and through Thursday morning with north
winds sustained around 25 mph and gusting to 35 mph.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Quiet conditions for most of the area in the near term. Low stratus
persists in areas along the West Coast as north flow continues
into late week. Strong high pressure over Siberia will keep any
foul weather from moving into the West Coast going into the
weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Flood Advisory for an Ice Jam on the Chena River just downstream
from Milepost 26 on Chena Hot Springs Road near the confluence
with Hunts Creek was issued with public reports of an ice jam near
mile marker 26 on Chena Hot Springs Road. Other reports have come
in with small streams, creeks, and sloughs beginning to see
meltwater buildup and minor flooding in places. Continue to use
caution upon going onto the rivers as melt off has begun the
process of weakening the river ice. Snow melt off will slow in
the coming days as temperatures cool and nighttime temperatures
dip below freezing.
