Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A 988 mb low currently in the southwestern Bering Sea will create
an active weather pattern that will impact the forecast area
through the weekend and early next week. It will bring abundant
moisture to the Yukon Delta north into the Western Brooks Range
through Saturday with a variety of precipitation types, mainly
rain south of the Seward Peninsula to snow in the Brooks Range and
along the Northwest Arctic Coast from Point Hope to Utqiagvik.
Ongoing precipitation over the West Coast and Western Interior is
falling in the form of rain. Snow is found in the higher
elevations of the Southwest Brooks Range and along the coast from
Point Hope to Wainwright. Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories
for snow and light freezing rain are in affect for several areas
along the Brooks Range to the Chukchi Sea Coast near Point Hope
and St. Lawrence Island. Rain, generally 0.25 to 0.50 inches is on
tap for many locations on the West Coast and Western Interior
today and 0.25 to 0.50 inches for the Central and Eastern Interior
tonight and Saturday. A second round of rain will push into the
Central and Eastern Interior on Sunday night and Monday with an
additional 0.5 to 0.8 inches expected.

.DISCUSSION...
Numerical weather models remain in good agreement through the
weekend with solutions diverging slightly with the strength and
placement of the areas of moderate to heavy rain beginning early
next week. At upper levels, a ridge will remain over Eastern
Alaska and the Yukon through Sunday. Active weather on the western
and northern peripheral of this ridge as a series of strong
shortwaves move north and east, bringing several rounds of
precipitation over the West Coast, the Western Interior, Central
and Eastern Interior, and the North Slope through Saturday. An
additional round of moisture will push northeast into the Central
and Eastern Interior Sunday evening into Monday. Snow levels are
high, with levels greater than 4000 feet over a large area of the
Interior and Southwest Alaska and generally around 2000 feet along
the southern Brooks Range and Arctic Plain.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Temperatures trending cooler through Sunday over much of the North
Slope and Brooks Range on the backside of surface low that will
track east across the North Slope today into Canada by tonight.
Winds will turn more northerly, with the strongest winds primarily
offshore of Point Lay and Wainwright. Gap winds through the
central Brooks Range will persist into Saturday morning.
Precipitation will be snow along the Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea
Coasts with a possible freezing rain, rain/snow mixture, and rain
in the interior plain, around Umiat, this evening. Precipitation
will transition to all snow by Saturday morning, bringing
widespread snow and accumulations to the region. A Winter Weather
Advisory has been issued for zone 206 for 4 to 6 inches of snow
and a chance of freezing rain.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Rain continues over the West Coast and Western Interior and will
continue through Saturday night. With high snow levels and warm
surface temperatures, expect the precipitation type to remain
primarily as rain from the Seward Peninsula and south. Snow,
localized heavy amounts, will occur from the upslope areas of the
Western Brooks Range to Point Hope and south to far western Seward
Peninsula and St. Lawerence Island. Winter Storm Warnings have
been issued for zones 207, 208, 213 and zone 217. Winds generally
less than 15 mph today and Saturday with some stronger winds from
Cape Lisburne south through the Bering Strait into western St.
Lawrence Island.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Rain continues to push into the Central Interior this afternoon
and will push into the the Eastern Interior this evening and will
continue into Saturday evening. Precipitation totals are expected
to be in the 0.25 to 0.50 inch range. Snow levels are expected to
remain high with only the highest highway summits expected to see
any snow mixing in with the rain. Winds generally variable and
less than 15 mph over much of the area through Sunday, except for
stronger gap winds through the Alaska Range Passes into Saturday
morning. With the warm temperatures in place combined with rain,
this will contribute to additional snow pack melting and ponding
of water with urban runoff. Another round of rain is expected
Sunday and Monday over much of the Interior with high values of
precipitable water for April, in the range of 0.50 to 0.80. This
will be monitored closely for hydro impacts as this additional
rain will likely cause significant melt off of already the well
ripened snow pack.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

We continue to receive reports of smaller streams, creeks, and
sloughs with open leads developing and ponding of water on top of
the ice with the warmer temperatures and rain that we've had.

with high values of precipitable water for April, in the range of
0.50 to 0.80. This will be monitored closely for hydro impacts as
this additional rain will likely cause significant melt off of
the already the well ripened snow pack.
