currently over the Western Bering Sea deepens to 982 mb as it

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Northern Alaska will continue to experience a quiet
but cooler than normal weather pattern into the middle of next
week. Temperatures in the Arctic will range from the 20s to 40s
below, while the West Coast and Interior will see temperatures in
the from 5 below to 30 below today, then a little warmer Monday.
Temperatures will rise nicely during the day with mostly clear
skies across the area. Strong winds are expected on the Northwest
Arctic Coast, West Coast, and across the Brooks Range, and Delta
Junction Monday. Potential for ground blizzard on the Northwest
Arctic Coast as winds increase Tuesday...continue to monitor.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...the 29/00z models initialized well against the surface
analysis and verified well against the 06z surface analysis. The
model suite displays minimal spread with synoptic scale features
both in strength and position in the short range and into the
middle of next week. Significant differences appear in the suite
of products and in particular the position and strength of a deep
low depicted by the GFS next weekend over the Central Bering Sea.
Both the Canadian, and ECMWF display a much weaker low well to the
west of the GFS solution. Significant differences are apparent in
with upper air solutions as well by the end of next week.

Aloft...At 500 mb a trough extending south and west over Northern
Alaska and the Yukon from a 488 DAM low just east of Wrangel
Island continues to slip south and east as a 547 DAM ridge
continues to build rapidly over Western Alaska and the Eastern
Bering Sea Monday and Tuesday. The upper level ridge continues to
build and push northeast to be over Wrangel Island as a 552 DAM
ridge by Wednesday. A trough begins to deepen over the Western and
Central Bering Sea on Wednesday. High pressure also builds in at
both 700 mb and 850 mb following the same track as the 500 mb
ridge with mostly clear skies and lower than normal temperatures
the result through mid week over much of Northern Alaska.

On the surface, the low that was over Southwest Alaska yesterday
has now push south and east into the Eastern Gulf of Alaska as t
988 mb low. A 1036 mb high pressure system centered over the
Eastern North Slope and Eastern Brooks Range will slowly drift
east through Monday. A 982 mb low with a strong front will sweep
north and east out of the Western Bering Sea to near the Gulf of
Anadyr Monday and will weaken over the Chukotsk Peninsula on
Tuesday. A strong pressure gradient will develop ahead of the
weakening low and the high pressure system over the Eastern North
Slope and Eastern Brooks Range on Monday night and Tuesday over
the Northwest Coast, the Southern Chukchi Sea Coast and Bering
Strait with the strongest gradient and strongest winds expected
north of Kivalina. Will continue to monitor for Winter Headlines
with very strong winds, and low visibility in blowing snow
possible in these areas late Monday and Tuesday. High pressure
aloft and at the surface will limit clouds and snow over the rest
of Northern Alaska. Gusty northerly through the passes in the
Eastern Alaska Range will continue into Monday where a Winter
Weather Advisory continues for blowing snow and low wind chill
values. Gusty winds are also expected over the highway summits
over the Interior today and tonight.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Winds are slowly diminishing over
the Eastern North Slope, however low wind chill will continue to
be a problem with a Wind Chill Advisory still in effect for zone
204. Conditions are expected to improve as temperatures begin to
slowly warm today.

Central and Eastern Interior...Another cold morning today with a
wide range in temperatures depending on local winds and mostly
clear skies. Strong insolation from the late March sun will warm
rather chilly start this morning. Gusty winds continue north of
Fairbanks so have issued a Special Weather Statement for drifting
snow and wind chill along the highways and on summits. North
winds continue through the Eastern Alaska Range Passes where an
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through this evening.
Expect blowing snow and wind gusts to 55 mph with visibility less
than one half mile at times.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...A weather system will move up
the West Coast bringing a mix of precipitation to the West Coast
and Western Interior area Wednesday, then moves northeast across
the state Thursday and Friday as it weakens and dissipates near
the AlCan border. Another system will move into the Bering Sea by
Friday evening, but models diverge on when it will make it to the
coast at this time.
