Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
The very active weather pattern continues across northern Alaska
with heavy snowfall expected from the Eastern Arctic Coast to the
Central Alaska Range and east to the AlCan border. Large amounts
of moisture will push across the area as flow aloft remains out of
the west and northwest. Temperatures warm slightly bringing a
chance of freezing rain mixing with the snow south of the Yukon
river this afternoon and Tuesday afternoon.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft, at 500 mb, a 473 dam low moves into the Canadian
Archipelago tonight and will continue slowly eastward through
midweek and weaken, while a ridge extends north across the NW
Pacific and into the southern Bering. Largely zonal flow will
persist across much of northern Alaska with several shortwaves
moving through the flow. A weak and subtle shortwave will push
eastward across the Chukotsk Peninsula and the Chukchi Sea
overnight and across northern Alaska Tuesday. A second more
distinct shortwave will follow closely behind the first moving
across the Chukchi Tuesday night and pushing across Alaska
Wednesday into Thursday. A shortwave rotating across the northern
periphery of the ridge will push across the Pribilofs Wednesday
morning and across Bristol Bay by Thursday evening.

Surface...High pressure extends north across the Y-K Delta and the
Eastern Bering Sea from a 1042 mb high centered south of the
Aleutians. A 1009 mb low is centered just north of Prudhoe Bay
this afternoon with a weather front draped south of it extending
south across the Brooks Range, the Yukon Flats, and to the
Fortymile Country. Another weather front extends from this low
southwest across the NW Alaska coast. This low will slide east
tonight and weaken. A 1002 mb low is 150 nm east of Wrangel
Island. It will move east tonight to be 350 nm northwest of
Wainwright by early Tuesday morning, deepening during the day
Tuesday to be a 999 mb low 200 nm north of Prudhoe Bay by Tuesday
afternoon, and a 990 mb low 50 nm south of Banks Island by early
Wednesday morning. As this low moves eastward it will drag a
weather front east across the Arctic Coast Tuesday and Wednesday
and send one south across northern Alaska during the same time
frame. The front that moves south to be along a line from Kotzebue
Sound to Allakaket To Eagle by Wednesday morning. A 1010 mb low
northwest of the Pribilofs Wednesday morning will weaken as it
moves eastward Wednesday across the Y-K Delta.

Models...
12Z model suite initialized well aloft against the 12Z RAOBS and
remain in good agreement with the overall large scale features
through Thursday, as well as the timing and strength of the smaller
scale perturbations in the flow. Run to run continuity remains
good. At the surface, models initialized fairly well, within 2 mb
of obs. Solutions are in good agreement overall, but a 4 mb
spread remains (albeit a few millibars smaller than previous model
runs) in the 12Z runs in the strength of the low that moves
across the Arctic Coast on Tuesday. Continued in the trend of
using NAM for winds and a general model blend for precip.

North Slope and Brooks Range: Snow continues with heavy snow
developing south and east of Nuiqsut, and along the Dalton Highway.
Winds have largely shifted to the west today. Expect west winds
to persist through Tuesday and increase with the frontal passage.
Winds will average 15 to 30 mph from Utqiagvik west, while winds
east of Utqiagvik will average 20 to 40 mph, with the strongest
winds occurring from Kaktovik east. Blizzard conditions will be
possible on the Eastern Arctic Coast Tuesday night.

West Coast and Western Interior: Heavy snow continues north of the
Seward Peninsula across the Kobuk and Noatak Valleys where an
additional 2 to 5 inches are expected through Tuesday afternoon,
with localized amounts up to 13 inches possible north of Ambler.
From the Seward Peninsula south, snow has largely diminished.
Temperatures will warm slightly and allow for the chance of
freezing rain in the lower Yukon Delta Tuesday night and
Wednesday; confidence remains low at this time as models are
having difficulties resolving temperatures.

Central and Eastern Interior: Snow continues across much of the
area today and will continue to do so for much of the time through
Wednesday. There will be variation in intensity and breaks in
snowfall, especially on Tuesday. Some of the heaviest snowfall is
expected to occur Tuesday night and Wednesday. Snowfall amounts
will range from a couple inches to possibly an additional 16
inches with the higher amounts in the Upper Chena, Salcha, and
Goodpaster River Basins and the White Mountains. In the Fairbanks
area, an additional 8 to 12 inches is expected, with higher
amounts in the hills. In addition to the falling snow will be an
increase in winds this afternoon, with west to southwest winds
gusting to 30 to 40 mph, with the highest winds occurring in the
hills. These winds will cause blowing snow as well as drifting
snow and will make travel difficult. Temperatures will warm
slightly Tuesday and Wednesday and could result in a chance for
freezing rain during the afternoon hours, but it will be mixing
with the snow.
