.SYNOPSIS...
A strong low over NW Alaska will move east over the next several
days. This is causing West winds 25-35 kt and snow and blowing
snow across the Arctic Coast with blizzard conditions developing
along the entire coast by this evenings, with blizzard conditions
continuing through Sat morning. This could cause elevated surf to
push ice on to the beach from Point Hope to Utqiagvik today
through Sat. The winds widns are expected to decrease on Sat.

Flurries over the Interior will end Fri as high pressure builds
over the Interior and skies slowly clear.

NW winds 15-30 kt over NW Alaska and ocean affect snow showers
over zones 207 208 209 210 will taper off tonight as winds
decrease.

A band of snow showers in the NW Bering Sea will move east over
the Bering Strait and St Lawrence Is tonight, and over the Seward
Pen and Norton Sound on Fri. Could get 1-2 inches of snow with
this.

A low moving in the NE Gulf of Alaska on Sat will bring A slight
chance of snow to the ALCAN Border Area Sat PM.

A very strong low moving into the Wrn Gulf of Alaska on Sun will
move to the Northern Gulf of Alaska on Mon. This will bring
moderate chinook winds to the Alaska Range Sun, with east winds 25
kt in easterly channeled ares of the Interior on Sun, and NE winds
25-35 kt along the West Coast from the Bering Strait south on Sun.

.DISCUSSION...
Models initialize well aloft at 12Z and show similar solutions
through 3pm Sat. After that time, the NAM and ECMF linger short
wave energy just north of the Arctic Coast longer than the GFS and
Canadian models which eject the energy to the NE. At this time
favor the NAM and ECMF aloft after 3pm Sat.

With precipitation, models show similar solutions through 3am
Sat, then the NAM brings precip into the SE Interior more quickly
than other models. At this time favor a blend of the NAM/ GFS/ECMF
for precip through 3am Sat, then use a blend of the NAM and ECMF
precip for Sat and Sun to reflect their similarities aloft. This
also will keep precip pops very low Sat and Sat night in the SE
Interior due to the ECMF showing no pops then wwhatthe NAM does.

At the surface at 15Z, models all verify 7 mb too weak on the low
just west of Wainwright, and about 8 mb too weak on the low near
Inuvik. Due this disparity, winds along the Arctic Coast will be
at least 5 kt stronger than models indicate today through Fri, and
possibly into Sat. Models show fair similarity at the surface
through 3pm Fri, then the GFS weaken the low north of the Arctic
Coast more quickly than other models. Prefer a blend of the NAM
and ECMF at the surface after 3pm Fri, with still keep winds along
the Arctic Coast 3-5kt stronger than models through Sat.

Bottom line for models is we prefer a blend of models through 3pm
Fri for winds, precip, temps, but add 5 or more kt above what
models indicate for winds along the Arctic Coast. After 3pm Fri
will use a blend of the NAM and ECMF for precip, temps, winds, but
keep Arctic Coast winds 3-5 kt stronger than models through Sat.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 441 AM AKST Thu Dec 3 2020/

SYNOPSIS...Most of the focus today will be in the Arctic as
Blizzard or near Blizzard conditions develop. Strongest winds
will be in the Eastern Arctic with southwest gusts near 60 mph
possible, while the remainder of the coastal areas and the
northern plains could see winds gusting to 55 mph. Heaviest snow
will be on the Northwest Arctic Coast, while east of Utqiagvik
expect mainly flurries, but there is a lot of snow available to
pick up and blow around. The strong winds over the Southwest
Arctic bring the potential for an Ivu to the Northwest Arctic
Coast from Point Lay to Point Barrow as seas will be building to
10 feet offshore and the ice remains mobile. Conditions will
improve Friday in the Arctic as the winds diminish and the low
moves northeast. In the Interior snow tapering off with some
clearing this evening, then more clearing overnight. The West
Coast will be fairly quiet as snow showers taper off with the
winds diminishing. There will be another round of show showers
moving to the Seward Peninsula tonight.

DISCUSSION...

Models...The 03/00Z solutions continue the trend of good
agreement in the short term, and initialized well aloft and at the
surface. Solutions turn to spaghetti after about 60 hours so will
need to lean more on the Ensemble means late in the short term
and through the extended periods. The good agreement on the
evolution of the stacked low lifting northeast over the Arctic
Friday, then merging with a low over the Canadian Archipelago by
Sunday remains on track. Surface solutions are not as messy as
they continue to hold the hold the high pressure between the
ranges through Sunday. Precipitation solutions a bit messy with
the ECMWF being a bit heavy handed, while the Hi Res solutions may
be a bit too light, so will need to find the middle ground and
will lean toward a blend of the NAM, GFS, and the Hi Res for the
near term. Temperature forecasts remain on the crazy side as
temperatures will continue to fall across the forecast area
through the day and into Friday before the start to moderate.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Ridging to the east is finally relenting and
the trough associated with the 500 dam low over Point Lay is
swinging around it and lies over Galena to Homer this morning. The
trough will continue to swing around the low as it moves
northeast and will lie over Allakaket to Anderson to Valdez later
this morning, and from Wainwright to Eagle this afternoon. Zonal
flow developing behind the trough will extend from Siberia to the
AlCan Border and persist into Friday before troughing starts
digging south over the West Coast and Western Interior. The low
over the Northwest Coast will move into the Arctic this evening
and will be 100 nm north of Utqiagvik Friday morning, and will be
moving northeast across the Central Beaufort Sea by Saturday
morning. Weak ridging will develop over the Western Arctic Friday
and move over the Central Arctic by Saturday morning. Weak ridging
over the Northeast Pacific is pushing northwest over Unalaska and
the Central Bering Sea this morning and will slide northeast as
the troughing moves north and will lie over the Gulf of Alaska and
the Eastern Bering Sea. A 526 dam high will develop near St
Matthew Island Saturday as a 518 dam low develops over the Upper
Koyukuk Basin. At 850 hpa...The -10C isotherm lies from Oliktok
Point to Chalkyitsik to Glennallen this morning and a pool of -20C
has been pulled southeast across the Northwest Arctic Coast and
the Middle Yukon Valley to the Western Alaska Range. The colder
temperatures will slide east later today to be over the Central
Arctic, Brooks Range, and Central and Eastern Interior. The colder
temperatures will continue to push south and east through
Saturday. A strong low moving to the Gulf of Alaska to start the
week will send warmer temperatures north into the Southern
Interior starting Sunday evening.

Surface...Broad area of low pressure continues to dominate the
forecast area, but change is on the way. A trough lies west to
east just offshore of the Arctic with several lows over the
nearshore waters from the Southwest Arctic to MacKenzie Bay. The
primary low is a 986 mb low that is 100 nm north of Demarcation
Point this morning, while a 983 mb low is over the Northeastern
Yukon Territory and the front extends southwest over the AlCan
Border Crossing to a 995 mb low in Prince William Sound. High
pressure is pushing east along the north side of the Alaska Range
with a 1008 mb high near Dillingham. By this evening the troughing
over the Arctic will be slowly sliding to the northeast as it
lies along 74N with a 988 mb low 200 nm north of Oliktok Point,
and a 982 mb low moving south of Banks Island. High pressure will
continue to build into the Interior with a 1015 mb high in the
Fortymile Country, a 1015 mb high in the Middle Kuskokwim Valley,
and a 1012 mb high near St Matthew Island. As the high pressure
builds a strong pressure gradient will develop over the Arctic
Coast and Plain with strong southwest to west winds that will
persist into Saturday before diminishing as the low moves
northeast. The high pressure between the ranges will continue to
build into Saturday with a 1020 mb high over the Upper Yukon
Flats, and a 1019 mb high over the Seward Peninsula.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Winds increasing through the day
with Blizzard conditions developing on the Coast and into the
Plains north of Umiat that will continue into the afternoon
Friday. Snowfall amounts will generally be light, but that
combined with blowing snow will create difficult travel conditions
with potential whiteout conditions and heavy drifting snow.
Temperatures cooling. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph will be
increasing locally to 20 to 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph.

West Coast and Western Interior...A few lingering snow showers
this morning, then some clearing south of the Seward Peninsula.
Another round of showers for the Seward Peninsula tonight with
local accumulations of around 1 inch. Winds diminishing today as
they turn from the north to northwest, then west tonight.
Strongest winds will be north of the Bering Strait today at 15 to
30 mph diminishing to 5 to 15 mph. Winds south of the strait will
be 5 to 15 mph. Cooler air continues to move into areas north of
the Strait and temperatures will continue to slowly fall, while
south of the strait temperatures will be fairly steady.

Central and Eastern Interior...Snow tapering off with a few
snow showers possible as colder air continues to push in
today. Clearing for most areas starting late this evening and
overnight. Winds picking up a little from the southwest and
gusting up to 15 mph into the afternoon, then light and variable
for most locations tonight and Friday. Temperatures will be
falling through the day with the high temperatures already
occurring and the low temperature being late this evening. Cold
will hang on through Sunday, then a short warming period in the
Southern Interior to start the week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Potential for Ivu along
the Northwest Arctic Coast from Point Lay to Point Barrow tonight
and Friday, otherwise no hazards.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Troughing aloft redeveloping
over the West Coast and Western Interior while ridging is pushing
in over the AlCan and building over the Western Bering Sea. The
troughing will drift east through the week as it weakens. At the
surface a strong low will move south of the Aleutians, then
northeast to Kodiak Island Monday pushing warm air into the
Southern Interior to start the week. Strong south winds developing
near Alaska Range Passes Monday night and will continue into
Tuesday. High pressure in the Interior will be pushed north of the
Yukon River Tuesday, then builds back south the remainder of the
week. A front will spread snow into the Western Interior, Northern
Interior, Brooks Range, and Eastern Arctic Monday as a similar
pattern to the last few days sets up to start the week.

Northwest winds of 25 mph blowing across a 200 mile stretch of the
Chukchi Sea are causing elevated surf at Shishmaref. The winds
are expected to decrease this afternoon and evening, with the surf
subsiding about 6 pm.
