Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
An active, wet, and messy weather pattern continues this afternoon
over much of the forecast area due to a front stretching from the
Central Bering Sea east over Norton Sound across the state to the
Yukon Flats. This activity will continue through Tuesday as the
front slowly drifts southeast through the Central and Eastern
Interior. Rainfall amounts at lower elevations generally less than
0.25 inches over a large area west and northeast of Fairbanks,
with higher elevations receiving snow accumulations of 1 to 3
inches. This additional rainfall combined with day time temperatures
above freezing will continue melting of the snowpack at lower
elevations resulting in localized issues with runoff and ponding
of water. Slightly cooler temperatures and drier weather will help
slow melt off over the next several days.

.DISCUSSION...
Numerical weather models are in reasonable agreement through
Thursday with a few minor differences Friday and the Weekend. An
upper level ridge that has been persistent over the Eastern
Interior and Yukon will continue to move east and south. A trough
will slowly move south across the North Slope this evening to the
Seward Peninsula by Tuesday morning from a low over the Canadian
Archipelago. Ridging will build in from Siberia to the Chukchi Sea
Coast Tuesday morning, resulting in clearing over the Northwest
Coast south into the Interior by midweek.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Much of the North Slope will remain relatively quiet through
Tuesday due in part to high pressure extending east across the
Chukchi Sea. In the meantime, stratus pushing south over the
Arctic Coast is producing some flurries and patchy fog.
Temperatures will be seasonable for much of the area through
Tuesday. Conditions will begin to decline Tuesday evening, when a
trough reaches the Central and Eastern Arctic Coast, increasing
the chances of snow. Winds, generally light and variable, will
increase along the Eastern Arctic Coast, near Barter Island as the
trough pushes south over the area. A Winter Storm Watch has been
issued for late Tuesday night through Wednesday Afternoon for the
possibility of blizzard or near blizzard conditions developing on
the Eastern Arctic Coast.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Clearing over the next few days as high pressure out of Siberia
pushes into the area, resulting in cooler temperatures. Winds
along the coast and slightly inland, north at 10 to 20 mph, with
stronger winds of 20 to 30 mph along the capes. Inland, winds will
be generally light and variable. Areas of dense fog will continue
over portions of the West Coast and the Western Interior.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Rain, mixing at times with snow at higher elevations, across much
of the area this evening continue to produce areas of fog which
is expected to be come dense this evening over the Southern
Interior and will limit visibility to one quarter mile or less at
times. Rain and snow will slowly drift southeast, resulting in
rainfall amounts at lower elevations generally less than 0.25
inches, with higher elevations receiving snow which could
accumulate to 1 to 3 inches at the highest elevations. Rain
combined with slightly above normal temperatures will continue
melting of the snowpack resulting in localized issues with runoff
and ponding of water. Winds generally variable and less than 15
mph over much of the area through Tuesday. Light winds combined
with light rain and additional moisture from snow pack melt will
contribute to areas of dense fog tonight and into Tuesday morning.
A Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for zone 222.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

No concerns at this time.

.HYDROLOGY...
Smaller streams, creeks, and sloughs are opening up and lake ice
is starting to turn as meltwater from the snowpack is ponding on
it. Minor nuisance flooding is occurring where drainage ditches
are still frozen. Ice is still firmly in place on major rivers and
lakes, but caution should be used if you venture out on them.
Cooler temperatures will continue through the week, with overnight
lows dropping to near or just below freezing over much of the
Southern Interior, but aside from the nuisance problems there are
no concerns at this time.
