Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The low responsible for the strong winds and briefly heavy rain
over much of the area Thursday and Friday continues to fill and
drift slowly northeast and away from the forecast area over the
Western Brooks Range. Several smaller perturbations are drifting
CCW around the broader circulation as it crawls towards the
eastern Arctic Ocean. Little shower activity remains outside areas
with upslope enhancement around the Prince William Sound and
along the windward Kuskokwim slopes. While strong flow up the Cook
Inlet is persisting for now, conditions are continuing to become
gradually calmer over the mainland with cooler air now gently
filtering in across the Southwest behind the departing low.

A fast moving shortwave supporting a small, weak surface low is
entering the Gulf just south of Kodiak Island as it marches east,
and this feature is producing some gusty winds and showers as it
passes for mainly offshore waters. The initial reaches of another
system still out over the Kamchatka Peninsula are approaching the
Western Aleutians in the form of a warm front with plenty of
upper moisture nosing out ahead of this boundary into the far
Western Bering.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in good agreement for most synoptic features for the
next few days, especially for the track and timing for a deep low
crossing the Bering and then over to the North Pacific between
Saturday and Monday. However, there are still some differences
persisting for the placement and timing of a couple subtle
shortwaves that are set to move over Southcentral over the next
couple days. The most notable disagreement is with a band of
precip that should form somewhere along the Kenai Peninsula or far
Western Chugach from Saturday to Sunday. Some solutions show the
precipitation hugging the Prince William Sound and essentially
being purely upslope driven, while others show a deformation band
of cold rain and higher elevation snow develop as far west as
Anchorage and into parts of the Mat-Su valley. Confidence for this
portion of the forecast remains low to moderate with higher
confidence for the track and timing of the deeper low moving
across the Bering and then past the eastern Aleutian chain into to
the North Pacific by early Monday.

.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions will persist until late Saturday night when
MVFR cloud ceilings dropping to near 2500' are expected to
develop. Gusty southeast winds will continue through much of
Saturday, but they should gradually decrease from Saturday evening
to Sunday morning.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Monday Night)...

Some portions of Southcentral, particularly those inland, will
move into a relatively quiet period of weather the next few days.
Today, the main features will be a weak and fairly compact low
moving into the southern Gulf, and a weakening upper level trough
which will approach the mainland from the southwest. First with
the low in the Gulf, the center will track south of Kodiak Island
later this morning and then out into the open Gulf. There is some
disagreement as to how far west the precipitation shield will
reach, but a period of northeast flow along with lower ceilings
should result in rain in Kodiak City and surrounding areas around
the coast later today. As the low pulls away however, the winds
will shift northwesterly and clear everything out in a hurry, so
any bad weather in the area should be brief, only lasting a few
hours at most.

The upper level trough west of the area will be the animus for
scattered shower activity across much of mainland Southcentral
later on today, especially from Anchorage north, and focused along
the mountains. Light easterly flow across the northern Gulf in
response to the aforementioned low should move some Gulf moisture
westward into the Kenai and Chugach Mountains. When that moisture
reacts to the upper trough, an area of more concentrated shower
activity will develop. Where this small and otherwise subtle
feature develops remains a big forecast challenge, but appears
most likely to be in the mountains east of Anchorage, potentially
over Palmer, and into Hatcher Pass. This feature will gradually
shift east with time into the mountains. However, precipitation
activity should persist into the overnight hours in many of these
areas. For lower elevations, it's a certainty the precipitation
will fall as all rain. However with slightly cooler air moving in
aloft, up in the higher elevations of the Chugach and Talkeetnas,
including Hatcher Pass, the rain could mix with or change entirely
over to snow. Up to a few inches could potentially accumulate.
Freezing levels will fall to around 3,000 ft, so only in areas
above that level are any accumulations possible.

On Sunday, that area of precipitation will shift east, likely
focusing around the Prince William Sound area, where upslope in
the light easterly wind will assist in the maintenance of the area
of precipitation. For much of the Cook Inlet region, expect a mix
of sun and clouds with seasonable temperatures and an isolated
afternoon shower possible in the mountains.

By Monday, another much larger and stronger low will make its way
towards the Gulf. Fortunately, the track of this low will be even
further south and away from the mainland. However, it will also
have a much greater tap into subtropical moisture than its
predecessor. Thus, the occluded front wrapping around the northern
side of the large low is expected to produce several inches of
rain along portions of the Gulf Coast Monday and Monday night.
There is considerable uncertainty as to where the worst conditions
will be felt, but most of the solutions are honing in on Kodiak
Island likely being the greatest beneficiary of much of that
rainfall on east to northeast winds. Much lighter amounts of rain
are expected along the north Gulf Coast and Prince William Sound.

Looking ahead, there is decent agreement that the large low stalls
out over the southern Gulf for much of next week. This will
potentially keep rain, heavy at times, ongoing into Kodiak Island
for much of the day Tuesday as well. Conditions stay relatively
dry the further inland you go right through the upcoming workweek,
but every so often a disturbance could try to bring shower
activity to inland areas. Temperature-wise, conditions stay at or
above average, as the air mass warms several degrees next week.
For now, any cold air will stay out over the Bering.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A fairly zonal pattern will remain in place across Southwest
Alaska today with subtle upper level waves of energy. Most of the
rain shower activity this morning is across the western Alaska
Range and the Kuskokwim Mountains as the flow remains in from off
the Bering Sea. As the day goes on today, a weak upper level wave
in the flow will pass through Southwest that will initiate more
widely scattered rain shower activity for the Kuskokwim Delta and
the Middle Kuskokwim Valley. This rain shower activity will be
mainly diurnally driven and combined with weak cold air advection
aloft will help the showers to develop as it creates an unstable
atmospheric profile. After the sun sets, most of the rain shower
activity on the Delta and in the Kuskokwim Valley will diminish
with the Kuskokwim Mountains and the western Alaska Range holding
onto the rain shower activity as the flow remains upslope on the
west facing slopes. A shower or two also cannot be ruled out for
northern Bristol Bay.

A weak upper level ridge will develop across Southwest out ahead
of the approaching front with the next storm system. As the ridge
is building in Saturday night into early Sunday, expect clouds to
dissipate for a time with a mostly clear to partly cloudy sky
briefly. As a result, morning temperatures Sunday will be low to
mid 30s for the interior with upper 30s where the clouds hold on
with near 40 degrees at coastal regions. Clouds will quickly
increase on Sunday as the frontal system moves onshore. Rain will
overspread the Bristol Bay area west to Kipnuk Sunday evening and
continue into Monday morning when the flow will be mainly onshore
for all locations. As the center of the system continues moving
eastward, the orientation of the front will change causing the
main flow to become cross barrier. Therefore, areas to the west of
the Alaska Range and west of the Kuskokwim Mountains can expect
to dry out Monday afternoon and evening. Breezy conditions are
expected Monday afternoon through Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

The well advertised storm system is underway this morning and has
rapidly intensified since last night. Shemya's observation this
morning showed light rain and mist with winds around 18-20 kts or
21-25 mph. Winds will continue to increase this morning as the
system approaches and the pressure gradient increases. Expect rain
and wind for a good chunk of the morning before tapering to
showers in the afternoon and evening though the winds will stay
up. The western Aleutians will then dry out this evening and
remain dry through early Tuesday morning. Cold air advection is
expected to move through Shemya and Attu Island beginning this
evening. 850 mb temperatures are expected to fall from around 6-7
degrees Celsius this evening to around 0 to -1 Celsius by early
Sunday morning. As a result, the back side of the low is expected
to have the stronger winds as well as the stronger gusts due to a
more unstable profile to the atmosphere with the cold air
advection moving through. The center of the system will pass by
either near or just north of Shemya creating a particularly
interesting situation for them as if the low moves directly
overhead, the winds may go completely calm for a time before
ramping up again on the backside.

With all that said above, the storm will continue to move across
the Bering rather quickly as it never actually occludes and a very
fast 140+ knot jet will be steering the storm. Winds will be
mainly small crafts to gale force across the Bering Sea especially
on the front side of the storm. As the system moves eastward, the
backside is where we expect the storm force winds and gusts to
occur. As the rather intense cold air advection moves across the
Bering behind the low, storm force winds are expected in the
marine zones south of Shemya and Amchitka late this afternoon into
tonight. Another area of storm force winds are expected in the
marine zones around Amchitka and Adak Monday afternoon through
Monday night. As a result, wave heights are expected to be 20-30
ft south of the Chain with 10-20ft wave heights in the Bering.
The front is expected to reach the Pribilofs and the eastern
Aleutians by this evening with periods of rain and breezy
conditions.

Lastly, the first decent cold push of air from the Arctic and
Siberia will move over the Bering Sea Monday afternoon into early
Tuesday. 850 mb temperatures with this push are expected to be in
the -4 to -6 degree Celsius range. This will create a rather unstable
temperature profile over the Bering that will result in showery
activity with possibly even cold enough air for some snow to mix
in with the rain across the northern Bering Sea not far from Saint
Matthew Island. Small craft advisory criteria winds are expected
during this time frame.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5/Monday through Wednesday)...
A very large storm system will make its way from the vicinity of
the eastern Aleutians/southern Alaska Peninsula on Sunday night
into the Gulf of Alaska and northeast Pacific by Monday night.
Widespread gales are likely across much of the region from the
eastern Bering Sea to the Gulf of Alaska Monday through Tuesday.
There is also potential for a secondary surface low to form over
the Gulf sometime Tuesday. If this does occur, then would likely
be at least a small area of storm force winds. The system does
look like it will begin to weaken on Wednesday and exit toward
Southeast Alaska. Thus, winds should finally begin to die down.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Tuesday through Friday)...
The main focus to start the extended period on Tuesday will be a
very large storm system tracking from the Bering Sea to the Gulf
of Alaska and northeast Pacific. Based on this storm track, rain
and wind will clip Bristol Bay and then impact Kodiak Island and
the Gulf coast. Further north areas of Southwest and Southcentral
Alaska will remain mostly dry with seasonable temperatures. There
is some uncertainty in low position over the Gulf and in whether
a secondary low will form and enhance winds/rain somewhere in the
Gulf. However, do expect this system to weaken and exit eastward
Wednesday through Thursday. In general, after the impacts of that
system diminish, the weather looks relatively quiet across the
forecast area through Thursday.

As we head to Friday there is fairly large model spread in the
details of specific storm systems, but there are some commonalities
in the upper level pattern. It looks like an Arctic trough (or
multiple short-waves) will dig south across the Bering Sea and
into the north Pacific, causing the upper level flow to amplify.
This would then favor cyclogenesis over the Pacific south of the
Alaska Peninsula, with a storm track into the Gulf, which would
bring a return to storminess over the Gulf on up into Southcentral
Alaska. Stay tuned.
