.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Weak upper trough over the north Gulf to across the Copper River
Basin is producing some scattered clouds with a few showers.
Patchy stratus and fog evident over Kachemak Bay and and over Knik
Arm this morning is rapidly burning off. The remainder of
Southcentral is under generally fair skies with light winds and
coastal seabreezes. Ridging over Southwest Alaska produced
widespread stratus and some fog over the Kuskokwim Delta and
portions of eastern Bristol Bay. A strong low near the western
Aleutians had a frontal zone extending to the eastern Aleutians
and then south to over north Pacific. Strong easterly winds were
observed on the leading edge of the frontal zone and on the
northern and western periphery of the low.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models synoptically are in general agreement. The models though
have struggled with the positioning of the remnants of Typhoon
Bavi as it moves north of the Alaska Peninsula Sunday. The NAM
keeps the low center further west than the GFS, ECMWF, and
Canadian and is the outlier. For now will go with the remaining
model consensus toward a more eastward track.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Patchy shallow fog could develop during the early morning
hours, producing brief periods of IFR conditions. The Turnagain
Arm wind will move into the area Saturday afternoon, but will
shift back south in the evening. Rain shower activity will become
increasingly common Saturday evening, which could bring visibility
and ceilings to MVFR conditions. Looking further out, there is
potential for stronger winds Sunday evening.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Expecting another day of nice fall-like weather for Southcentral
on Saturday before two frontal systems move through the area
bringing strong winds and rain through Monday. The first front to
impact Southcentral extends eastward from a low pressure system
over the Central Aleutians. This front is expected to reach Kodiak
Island Saturday morning and then push north towards the Kenai
Peninsula Saturday night. Steady rain is expected along the
western Kenai Peninsula and northern Gulf Coast as the front
moves in and then stalls.

Convergence along the northern Gulf Coast should lead
to coastal ridging and strong winds through the mountain passes
and into the Turnagain and Knik Arms starting Saturday evening.
The Turnagain Arm winds should turn into the Anchorage area
Saturday afternoon/evening due to a weak thermal trough setting up
over the Susitna Valley. Overnight Saturday/early Sunday morning
these winds should move back over the Arm and down-inlet as the
thermal trough breaks down; however, the Anchorage Hillside is
likely to have strong winds through Monday.

The second front is expected to bring another round of wind and
rain across Southcentral Sunday and Monday. The parent low
is the first large storm system of this fall storm season and is
expected to move over Bristol Bay Sunday afternoon. With this
weather pattern a deep southwesterly moisture fetch is expected
to setup over Southcentral. This should reinforce rain from the
first frontal system along the northern Gulf Coast as well as
provide the southwesterly moisture fetch needed to bring rainfall
to the Anchorage area, western Kenai, and up into the Susitna
Valley. Rainfall totals through Monday over the northern Gulf
Coast may reach up to 2.5 inches in areas like Seward and Cordova.
As for winds, strong up-inlet flow is expected to develop by
Monday morning, which will help to bring the strong winds off of
the Turnagain Arm back into Anchorage.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

The pattern is becoming more active across southwest Alaska as a
warm front moves through on Saturday and Saturday night and
brings a steady rain to the area. The heaviest rain bands are
expected to occur over Bristol Bay which is where the highest
total rainfall amounts are expected. Rainfall amounts will range
between 0.5" and 0.75" across central Bristol Bay with rainfall
amounts dropping off rapidly to the north and west. The bulk of
the rain is expected to miss the Kuskokwim Delta where rainfall
amounts between 0.05" and 0.15" are expected.

Southeasterly winds will increase Saturday night into Sunday
morning ahead of the first large storm of the season. The
strongest winds will occur along Cape Newenham and Cape
Constantine due to the localized funneling of winds. High end gale
force winds with storm force gusts are expected in those areas.
Another area that will have localized funneling is Kamishak Gap.
High end gale force winds with storm force gusts are expected in
Kamishak Gap mid-day on Sunday. Winds will gradually ease in
Kamishak Gap Sunday afternoon as the winds veer southerly and
then southwesterly. The heaviest rainfall will be when the center
of the storm moves over Southwest Alaska Sunday morning and
afternoon with the highest rainfall amounts above 1.00" in the
Ahklun Mountains due to upslope. An additional 0.75" to 1.00" of
rain is expected across Bristol Bay and between 0.5" and 0.75" of
additional rainfall is expected in the Kuskokwim Valley. The
precipitation associated with this storm will be stratiform which
will inhibit any chance of convective thunderstorms over
southwestern Alaska. Winds will gradually ease on Monday as the
rain gradually tapers off from west to east.

A Coastal Flood Watch has been issued for Bristol Bay from Sunday
evening through Monday morning due to the potential for water
levels to rise 2 to 4 feet above highest astronomical tide as
strong southwesterly onshore flow is expected at that time.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

The first large storm system of the season is expected to form in
the western Bering Saturday night as the post-tropical remnants of
Typhoon Bavi merge with an upper level low. This will result in a
rapidly strengthening low pressure system that is expected to
track eastward into Bristol Bay by Sunday afternoon. Widespread
gale force winds are expected with this storm with areas of storm
force winds along the central to eastern Aleutians and Bristol Bay
Saturday night through Sunday afternoon. In addition to storm
force winds, high seas between 20-25ft are expected south of the
Aleutians as storm force winds combined with large fetch will
create favorable conditions for high seas to build. These seas
can be locally higher at times as the west-southwesterly winds and
primary swell will oppose the east-northeasterly currents which
can locally stack the seas and shorten the wave periods. Winds may
also be locally higher in the bays and passes along the Aleutian
Chain ahead of the center of the low as those gaps are prone to
funneling from the south. Winds will then gradually ease from west
to east across the Bering/Aleutians Sunday afternoon onward. Seas
will also gradually abate from west to east Sunday afternoon
onward.

This storm will also bring ample rainfall in the Aleutians with
the highest rainfall amounts expected in the Central to Eastern
Aleutians on the windward side of the mountains.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5/Monday through Wednesday)...

Gulf of Alaska: For the Monday morning into Monday evening time
period the Gulf of Alaska especially the western side will
continue to be experiencing southwesterly gale force winds as a
tight pressure gradient remains across the region. Gale force
winds will subside to small crafts overnight along with
diminishing waves as the pressure gradient eases. These winds
and waves will continue to further diminish throughout the day
Tuesday. A fairly benign pattern is expected for Wednesday with
generally light winds and low waves. However, this time period
for Wednesday is being watched as some model guidance is showing a
system moving up into the eastern Gulf of Alaska with increased
winds and waves potentially. The strength, track, and intensity
remain uncertain at this time and will be fine tuned in the coming
days.

Bering Sea and Aleutians: The beginning of the forecast period
will feature a mainly northerly to northwesterly wind flow regime
on the back side of the low pressure on Monday. Small craft
advisory criteria winds are expected through at least Monday
evening especially across the eastern Bering Sea to Bristol Bay.
The overall trend beyond Monday evening will be continued
diminishing winds and waves as a more benign pattern sets up for
Tuesday into Wednesday. Model guidance is hinting at an upper
level disturbance moving through the western Bering/Aleutians
Tuesday into Wednesday that may bring a slight uptick in winds to
maybe low end small crafts. This will continue to be monitored.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Tuesday through Friday)...

Upper level troughing is expected to dominate much of the long
term forecast period with multiple upper level waves moving
through the flow. This will support a showery, wet, and cool
pattern for much of Mainland Alaska and the Bering Sea/Aleutians.
The timing, strength, and intensity of these individual waves will
be fine tuned each day as the new model guidance comes in. Towards
the very end of the period, model guidance is hinting at some
upper level ridging nudging northward into Southcentral Alaska
east to the AlCAN border and Southeast Alaska. The placement of
this upper level ridging is very uncertain at this time with the
apex being over Southeast Alaska or over the North Pacific. This
will affect the sensible weather if it is further west, it would
provide a respite from the wet, cool, and cloudy weather to end
next week.
