Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED

Issued at 950 PM CDT Wed Mar 18 2020

Based on area webcams and surface obs (revealing fog/drizzle), as
well as the low level thermal profile across north central South
Dakota (revealing drizzle becoming freezing drizzle or light
freezing rain tonight, changing over to light snow into Thursday
morning), went ahead and introduced a preliminary three county
winter wx adv (Corson/Campbell/McPherson) for a wintry mix of
precip types. Not really all that much of each type of precip
accumulation ("light ice glaze" followed by "skiff/few tenths of
an inch of snow" type amounts), but enough to potentially
introduce slick roads/bridges/sidewalks. The wind, once it picks
up on Thursday will add another layer of difficulty to travel on
snowy/icy roads. The remainder of the forecast is in pretty good
shape this evening. Updates are out.

.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Thursday Night)
Issued at 244 PM CDT Wed Mar 18 2020

A southwest CONUS upper level low will continue to organize and
propagate to the northeast this evening, overnight, and through the
day Thursday.  A mixed bag of precipitation is expected with this
system.  Initially precipitation looks to start out as drizzle for
most of the area as low level stratus thickens this evening.
Fortunately, this drizzle is not expected to be freezing as
temperatures start out in the upper 30s to low 40s at the onset.
Drizzle will become a more solid precipitation as saturation begins
to extend through the mid layers.

As temperatures cool off aloft and at the surface, a transition from
drizzle to freezing drizzle/rain followed by snow is expected.
Shortly after surface temperatures begin to drop below freezing,
BUFKIT soundings indicate saturation will occur throughout the DGZ.
This will lead to a relatively small window of freezing
rain/drizzle. Therefore, ice accumulations are expected to remain at
a couple hundredths or less.  And even then, there is a question of
whether or not road temperatures will cool down fast enough to
allow  ice to develop from damp roads.

Overall, most of the CWA is not expected to get a ton of moisture
with less than a tenth of an inch expected for most areas except the
far southern and southeastern zones that may see up to a quarter
inch.  Ice should be limited to a couple or few hundredths and snow
generally less than an inch except maybe slightly more in the
southeastern forecast area.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

The extended period starts off with high pressure settling in over
the region, which looks to be the dominant feature over the area
through Friday night before getting pushed eastward by low pressure
sliding across the Rockies. May see some light rain or snow showers
over the eastern CWA Sunday afternoon and evening ahead of the
system. Quite a divergent pattern in the models after that, with all
of them showing the potential for some precipitation around the
Tuesday/Wednesday time frame. Will just stick with small POPs for
now during those time periods.

Friday will be the coolest day of the long term, with a gradual
warming trend expected after that. Highs will be in the 20s on
Friday, in the 30s Saturday, and in the 40s and 50s Sunday through
Wednesday. After a chilly night with lows in the single digits and
teens Friday night, overnight lows will be in the 20s Saturday night
and Sunday night, and in the lower to mid 30s Monday night and
Tuesday night.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday Night)
Issued at 1227 AM CDT Thu Mar 19 2020

Sub-VFR cigs will be common throughout the TAF period. After 18Z
Thursday however, cigs will begin to improve/clear off from
northwest to southeast across the region, despite the strong north
winds persisting. A storm system will bring mainly drizzle/freezing
drizzle (very light freezing rain) potential to the area for the
rest of tonight. Expect a switch over to snow from north to south on
Thursday. Periods of sub-VFR vsbys from fog and precipitation will
be possible as well. Finally, look for northerly winds to increase
on Thursday to 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph or higher, and
persist into Thursday night before beginning to diminish.
