Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 305 AM MST Mon Feb 10 2020 .SYNOPSIS... Light amounts of rain and snow associated with a weakening cold front and passing upper disturbance are expected through early this afternoon over portions of the west and central. A short break is expected later this afternoon, then conditions will rapidly deteriorate tonight through Tuesday as a winter storm impacts New Mexico. Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected to spread across the mountains, portions of the Rio Grande Valley and eastern plains by early Tuesday. Strong and gusty canyon winds will make for highly variable snow amounts as well as areas of blowing snow through the Albuquerque and Santa Fe metro areas. Travel will likely be impaired across northern and central New Mexico due to the snow, wind and colder than normal temperatures. The storm should exit the state by early Wednesday, but colder than average temperatures persist through the rest of the week. && .DISCUSSION... .SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT) Weak subtropical disturbance crossing NM this morning has aided in the development of lower elevation rain and mountain snow. Snow levels should be around 6500 feet where it is precipitating this morning, and based on the T/Td at the Sunport, it does not look like there will be a transition to snow in the Albuquerque area later this morning, and this agrees well with forecast soundings. That said, the Sandia, Manzano and South Central Mountains should be picking up some snow. Tusas look to largely be missing out as the disturbance is slightly farther to the southeast than originally thought, but will keep all current Winter Weather Advisories intact through the noon hour. There still looks to be a break in the action for most areas this afternoon, however, weak mid-level convergence may produce a light band of rain/snow across northwest NM. Snow levels will rise this afternoon thanks to weak southwesterly flow. The next winter storm will impact NM tonight through Tuesday night. A closed low, now off the coast of SoCal, will shift eastward along the AZ/MX border today and tonight. As it does so, it now appears that it will phase with a northern stream trough. Meanwhile, a strong back door cold front will drop into NE NM this evening, and push south and west through Tuesday morning. Strong PVA ahead of the trough combined with very strong low and mid level frontogenesis and above normal moisture will lead to widespread rain changing to snow tonight. Snow will be the dominant precipitation type by sunrise Tuesday, as the front will have pushed through the entire CWA. Snow may be heavy at times with poor visibility. Additionally, behind the back door front, breezy conditions can be expected across much of the plains, leading to areas of blowing snow. However, as the front pushes through the gaps of the Central Mountain Chain around 08-09Z tonight, a 7 to 8 mb pressure difference between ABQ and CQC will lead to the potential for high winds with gusts near 60 mph to develop downstream of Tijeras Canyon in the ABQ Metro, with lesser but still strong gusts around SAF and Glorieta Pass. Since this is when the colder air will arrive, this will coincide with rain changing over to snow, however, as we have seen in the past, the east winds may leave a snow hole over portions of the Metro areas. Given the likely varied snow amounts (higher over Rio Rancho, north sides of Santa Fe; lower downstream of gaps), and the potential for blowing snow and high winds, opted to go with a Winter Storm Warning for the Metro areas. The remainder of the watch was converted mainly into other Winter Storm Warnings, though portions of the southwest and northwest will be upgraded to Winter Weather Advisories. Snow will persist across the area on Tuesday, and will focus across the southeast quarter or so of the area by late afternoon as the phased low/trough finally shifts into NM. The system will continue to shift eastward Tuesday night, and much of the precipitation will be gone by sunrise Wednesday. LONG TERM...(WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY)... Despite leaning toward the colder guidance, forecast highs might still be too warm for Wednesday depending on areal coverage and amount of snow accumulations. Snow to taper off from northwest to southeast by early Wednesday, but northwest flow may keep scattered snow showers going over the Sangre de Cristo mountains through the day. Winds will be gusty in areas that favor northwest flow, such as Clines Corners. Models continue to struggle with the timing and strength of disturbances embedded in northwest flow aloft. One such disturbance could bring snow to the northwest and north central Friday into early Saturday and again Sunday into Monday. High temperatures will remain mostly below normal over northern and central New Mexico through early next week. && .FIRE WEATHER... Critical fire conditions are not expected for the next several days. Rather a winter storm will drop several inches of snow across the majority of northern and central NM tonight through Tuesday night. A strong back door cold front will bring breezy conditions to much of the plains tonight, but will also bring the potential for gusts upwards of 60 mph below gaps in the Albuquerque Metro early Tuesday morning. Below normal temperatures will be the rule for much of the area for the next seven days. Much drier weather will be on tap after Tuesday night until next weekend or early next week when additional storm systems may impact NM. Periods of poor ventilation will be the rule for the next several days. 34 && .AVIATION... 06Z TAF CYCLE Backdoor cold front will continue to push wwd into the RGV and KSAF, KABQ and KAEG tonight with gusts of 25 to perhaps 30 kt most likely at KABQ. Conditions will deteriorate further after midnight, especially across central New Mexico where areas of rain and snow will develop with widespread MVFR to localized LIFR conditions.
