Quick update to lower temperatures across most areas, though especially so across the southeast plains. The back door front plowed through the plains a bit faster than expected, and snow is already falling across much of the area. Temperatures may have already reached their max for the day across the east. Based on current snow totals and radar trends, have also opted to upgrade the Winter Weather Advisory for the SC Mtns and adjacent highlands to a Winter Storm Warning. Will continue to evaluate the need to upgrade additional zones across southeast NM this afternoon. Updates out shortly. 34 && .PREV DISCUSSION...1100 AM MST Tue Feb 4 2020... .AVIATION... 18Z TAF CYCLE A mixed-bag of VFR to LIFR conditions prevail, with areas of snow and widespread mountain obscurations. Some improvement is forecast across western NM later today, but much of eastern NM will remain steady or deteriorate even more. Snow accumulation is possible on runways, especially at KLVS and KTCC and later at KROW. Conditions will improve slowly overnight, but patches of low stratus/fog will may prevail across central NM and snow will linger over eastern areas overnight, especially at KROW. && .PREV DISCUSSION...840 AM MST Tue Feb 4 2020... .UPDATE... Based on radar trends and web cams we have issued winter weather advisories for much of the central zones and all the eastern plains. This includes the Albuquerque and Santa Fe Metros. Actual snow amounts may be below criteria, but with the cold temperatures can cause roads to become icy. Chaves, Roosevelt and Curry Counties will see snow for a longer period of time and could end up with warning criteria when all said and done tomorrow morning. && .PREV DISCUSSION...233 AM MST Tue Feb 4 2020... .SYNOPSIS... A big cooldown arrives today as a very cold storm system makes its way eastward across the central Rockies. High temperatures today will be 20 to 40 degrees colder compared to yesterday. This system will also bring snow to the northern mountains and portions of eastern New Mexico. One to three inches of snow will be possible for areas near Las Vegas to Raton Pass and eastward into San Miguel and Harding counties. This combined with very cold temperatures may create hazardous travel, particularly along the Interstate 25 corridor. Snow will linger across the southeast plains Wednesday afternoon before the system finally exits late in the day. Breezy to windy conditions are likely though on Thursday, but after that, temperatures will warm into the weekend as conditions remain dry. && .DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY)... An anomalously cold upper level trough is progressing slowly eastward from the Great Basin and Desert SW toward the southern Rockies and New Mexico. At the same time, a backdoor cold front is sliding southwest across the eastern plains with temperatures dipping down into the lower 20s behind it. The 00Z upper air data showed a very cold airmass on the way from the west, with 700mb temperatures ranging from -10C over Flagstaff to -18C over Elko and Salt Lake City. This system exhibits strong baroclinicity and areas of precipitation are currently on the uptrend across central and eastern portions of the state. Higher snow ratios will maximize snow amounts today/tonight given our relatively low PWAT atmosphere...and a very cold airmass behind the backdoor front will increase impacts to area roadways. Therefore, have expanded the Winter Weather Advisory to include the eastern highlands, Raton ridge, south central mountains and SW Chaves County. May need to add the Chaves Co. plains and possibly Roosevelt Co. later...and may also need to extend the southern zones deeper into Tuesday night. Our forecast snow amounts barely meet advisory criteria, but again the very cold airmass will ramp-up impacts to area roadways with snow-packed and icy roads anticipated. The wind highlights for the south central mountains and adjacent highlands continue through 12Z, but may need to extend for a few more hours. Precipitation will focus over southeast NM and west TX tonight through Wednesday as the upper level trough swings east across the state. Lastly, the backdoor portion of the front will push into the RGV later today and may bring sufficient added forcing for a round of snow to the Albuquerque and Santa Fe Metro areas, with potential for an inch of accumulation. Otherwise, the big story will be the brutally cold temperatures for the next 36 to 48 hours, with a number of northeast NM locales remaining below freezing. Temperatures will be well below normal and will likely set a few new record cold high temperatures today. Tonight's low temperatures will be equally impressive and will dip down below zero at several lower elevation locales including Taos, Raton, Des Moines and possibly Las Vegas. 11 LONG TERM...(WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY)... The storm system exits by late Wednesday, leaving behind brisk, northwest flow. With a strong upper-level jet and 700mb winds approaching 50 knots, winds will be breezy to windy across portions of western NM as well as the Sacramento Mountains northward to Clines Corners. Some advisory level speeds may be possible in these areas. Those winds will taper off after sunset as the flow relaxes. After that, flow will become zonal into the weekend and temperatures will warm up nicely to above normal for most. The exception may be across the east on Saturday as a backdoor cold front cools temperatures a few degrees. The slight dip in temperatures won't last long though. The next chance for precipitation comes early next week as a storm system potentially impacts the area Monday into mid-next week. Lots of uncertainty this far out, of course, so stay tuned. 15 && .FIRE WEATHER... A very cold airmass will overtake the area today and bring well below normal temperatures through mid week. Good chances for wetting precipitation in the form of accumulating snow will prevail along and immediately east of the central mountain chain today, including the east central plains. Strong northwest flow will bring windy conditions to the higher terrain and eastern highlands Thu/Fri. Daytime temperatures will be back above normal areawide by Friday, but the warming will continue through the weekend despite a short- lived setback across the eastern plains Saturday due to a weak backdoor front.
