Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 323 PM MST Sun Dec 27 2020 .SYNOPSIS... A storm system continues to make its approach toward the Land of Enchantment, with the brunt of the winter weather impacts expected late tonight through Tuesday afternoon. Several inches of snow can be expected in the northern high terrain, especially in the Tusas Mountains. Snowfall amounts in this region will range from 6 to 12 inches, with 3 to 8 inches likely for the west slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Meanwhile, 1 to 3 inches will be common along the Continental Divide in western New Mexico. This will result in slick road conditions. This system will also bring colder readings, with most areas 5 to 15 degrees below normal on Wednesday. Another system will impact the region Thursday night into Friday, bringing the threat for light snow to the higher terrain once again. Expect a reinforcement of colder weather with this system. Quieter weather and warmer readings are expected for next weekend. && .DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...(TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT)... Zonal flow aloft is gradually backing to the southwest as a potent storm approaches the West Coast. Diffluent flow aloft is developing and the KABX radar is picking up light returns over the northwest mountains. This trend will continue tonight and Monday with snow developing and expanding across northwest and north central areas. Meanwhile, the storm will move into CA Monday then lift northeast Monday night. Precipitation will continue to increase in coverage and intensity Monday night and beyond, mostly in the form of snow. There will be a mix rain and snow in the northwest and central valleys, and rain on the central and southeast plains. Model forecast soundings suggest there could even be a period of freezing rain or drizzle in the northeast late Monday night. Temperatures will remain mild for late December in the west Monday, but it will be cooler in the east as the downslope winds today gradually turn east, southeast and south. Lows tonight and Monday will be milder than recent nights thanks to the extensive cloud cover. CHJ LONG TERM...(TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY)... By 12Z/Tuesday, all numerical guidance depict a positively-tilted 500hPa trough axis stretching from the northern Great Plains to the southern Great Basin and southern CA. This complex system will bring a multitude of hazards and forecast challenges. Starting across the eastern plains, low-level southerly flow Monday night will continue into Tuesday morning, advecting moisture into the area before winds veer to more of a southwest-west component by afternoon. Pcpn in the form of light rain/drizzle along with stratus can be expected through Tuesday morning, but a main forecast challenge is whether evaporative cooling effects across northeast NM will favor more of a FZDZ or FZRA sounding profile. The NAM/HREF are more supportive of this potential, while the GFS keeps the sounding notably warmer. Will introduce FZRA in the grids thru 15Z/Tues, but it comes with rather low confidence. Shifting to western NM, orographic forcing Monday night will persist through Tues, but nearly all deterministic models depict a mesoscale band of moderate or brief heavy snow along the Continental Divide in advance of the Pacific front/trough axis. Depicting the exact timing and location of this band can be difficult this far out in time, but I-40 and morning commute travel impacts will be a concern. Expect the band to break-up once it migrates into the Rio Grande Valley and east of the central mtn chain - which is very typical in this situation. A third hazard will be the potential for strong winds in the srn parts of the CWFA. At 12Z/Tues, a 45-55kt 700hPa jet will be aligned across southwest to northeast NM, and this will favor gusty to strong winds in the Sacramento Mts and potentially locales immediately downstream. However, as the day progresses, the strength of the 700hPa jet should weaken considerably. The stronger winds aloft may not be aligned with deep mixing, and as a result, peak surface winds may occur during the morning/early afternoon hours for many locations. Timing will be key, so will need to monitor for the potential for wind highlights. By Tuesday eve, snowfall over the northern mountains will gradually wane as much colder air invades the region. Meanwhile, the backdoor component of the front will race southward through the ern plains. A relatively tight sfc pressure gradient immediately behind the front will support breezy to windy conditions Tuesday night into Wednesday. Pcpn chances on Wednesday should be southeast of the CWA compliments of dry northerly flow. The Gulf of Alaska will continue to be our friend as it sends another weakening upper low southward through the PacNW and into the southern Rockies. There are notable track and strength differences within the deterministic guidance and 500hPa height anomaly charts, with the EPS further south (central/southern NM) compared to its GEFS counterpart (southern CO/northern NM) at 12Z Fri. Unfortunately, the brunt of the moisture related to this system will be rung-out as it quickly moves through the Intermountain West, but enough juice should be present to support light snow across the higher terrain of NM Thursday night and Friday. This system does not appear to be a blockbuster event. Flow aloft will become more west-northwest on Saturday, then zonal on Sunday. Any hazards will be related to gusty winds downstream of the central mountain chain. High temps should return closer to normal for Saturday, then slightly above normal on Sunday. DPorter && .FIRE WEATHER... A storm off the west coast will come inland Monday and turn northeast Tuesday. It will be able to pull moisture north into NM. Snow over the northwest mountains tonight will spread south and east Monday, with rather widespread precipitation Monday night and Tuesday. Most of the precipitation will fall as snow, but there will be a mix of rain and snow in the northwest and central valleys and mostly rain will fall on the plains of southeast and east central NM. There could even be a period of sleet in northeast NM Late Monday night and Tuesday morning. Wetting precipitation will be widespread over the west and north, especially the higher terrain. The snow will diminish Tuesday night and end Wednesday with chilly temperatures. A break in the weather into Thursday will give way to another storm system for New Year's Eve night and New Year's Day. This system will be a quick hitter and a chilly one with all snow the likely form of precipitation. Next weekend should be dry with moderating temperatures. CHJ && .AVIATION... 18Z TAF CYCLE The strong winds along the east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains early this morning are diminishing. High to mid-level clouds will increase in coverage through tonight. A few snow showers are also possible late this afternoon across the Tusas Mountains with coverage expanding overnight across northwest and north central NM. In this TAF cycle, KFMN is the TAF site most likely to be impacted late tonight by light snow and possible MVFR conditions. Travel impacts may start to impact roads within the Tusas Mountains, including the Chama area, after midnight. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday The Pacific storm system will approach Monday night and pass over on Tuesday, bringing a round of accumulating snow and travel impacts to much of the western and northern high terrain. In addition, strong winds will develop across far western New Mexico on Monday, and may also impact the Upper Gila and Sacramento Mountains Monday night and Tuesday. Strong northerly winds are also possible Tuesday night into Wednesday behind a front in the far eastern plains.
