.Critical fire weather conditions will impact much of northern and
central New Mexico today. As a vigorous upper level trough 
organizes to the west of New Mexico, and a surface low deepens in
eastern Colorado, strong west to southwest winds will develop over
much of New Mexico. The strongest winds are expected across
western New Mexico. Even though temperatures will be near to 
below normal across central and western New Mexico, the lack of 
precipitation and dry fuels combined with the strong winds and low
humidity values will create critical fire weather conditions.
Even cooler conditions are expected for Tuesday, but critical 
fire weather conditions are still expected to develop across 
portions of eastern New Mexico.

VFR conditions are expected to prevail across northern and central
New Mexico through Monday. A batch of high-based cumulus clouds will
continue blossoming over the higher terrain with a few virga
(evaporating rainfall) showers and mostly dry thunderstorms possible
over and just east of the higher mountain locations. With such little
rainfall falling from these showers and storms, the primary aviation
threat will be the gusty downburst winds associated with them.
Otherwise prevailing winds will be breezy to locally windy this
afternoon, decreasing in the lower elevations overnight and then
re-strengthening late Monday morning into the afternoon. The hot
temperatures this afternoon and on Monday will create high density
altitudes, posing difficult ascents for some aircraft.

.SYNOPSIS...
Increasing winds and dryness will result in critical fire weather
conditions for western New Mexico today and Monday and across the
east on Tuesday. Any showers or storms that develop today will
produce gusty erratic winds but little to no rain. Monday and
Tuesday will be dry. Quiet and less windy weather is expected
Wednesday with indications for increased moisture and thunderstorm
potential to kick off the July Fourth holiday weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH MONDAY)...

A weak upper level trough will cross NM today, though little
precipitation is expected due to much drier air moving into the
area. If any precipitation develops, it will be favored near and
just east of the Sacramento Mountains as well as near the CO border
in NE NM. In both cases, any storms will be drier in nature, and
produce very little rainfall. Instead virga and gusty winds will be
the rule.  Otherwise, a breezy day in store with near to below
normal temps across the west, and above normal temps across the
east.

Late tonight into Monday, a PacNW low will dive southeastward into
southern Idaho with the trough axis extending southward into AZ by
Monday afternoon. Mid level winds will increase over NM while a
surface low deepens to near 990 mb over eastern CO, increasing the
low level pressure gradient. Therefore, it will be a bit windier on
Monday than today. Additionally, as a dry slot moves over the state,
precipitation will be on hold.

LONG TERM...(TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY)...

Upper trough and associated cold front to pass over New Mexico on
Tuesday resulting in breezy to windy, dry and relatively cooler
conditions. Wednesday will be dry as well, but less windy and
warmer. It will be a transition day as the upper ridge starts to
build northward into New Mexico. The high center will be east of New
Mexico Thursday into Friday, allowing moisture from Old Mexico to
circulate into the state, and sparking a return of showers and
storms to the Land of Enchantment. By the July Fourth weekend, the
high center could migrate a bit westward, but moisture will remain
trapped under the ridge, leading to daily rounds of showers and
storms.

.FIRE WEATHER...

More breezy conditions are in store for today, especially across
western New Mexico. The strongest winds are expected near Gallup,
and have opted to upgrade the Fire Weather Watch for zone 105 to a
Red Flag Warning. Forecast winds across zone 101 continue to be shy
of critical criteria, thus will not upgrade the Fire Weather Watch
in this area. It will remain close though, and an hour or two of
critical conditions are not out of the question. Additionally,
spotty critical conditions will be possible across eastern New
Mexico, particularly between Las Vegas and Tucumcari.

Winds will increase further on Monday as a PacNW trough dives
southeastward and a surface low over eastern CO deepens to near
990mb. A dry slot shifting overhead will also help reduce humidity
values further. Critical fire weather conditions are expected across
much of western NM Monday afternoon and early evening, despite
temperatures forecast to be a few degrees below normal. A Fire
Weather Watch has been issued for this area. This watch may be
expanded on later shifts as forecast winds may strengthen. As for
now, 1 to 3 hours of critical conditions can be expected in most
other areas. Also of note, between 2 and 5 hours of single digit
humidity values are expected across portions of the Rio Grande
Valley and eastern plains.

On Tuesday, the surface low will shift eastward into KS, which will
allow the pressure gradient, and hence the strongest winds, to be
focused across eastern NM. Critical fire weather conditions will be
possible across much of eastern NM.

Less wind is expected for Wednesday through the end of the week as
an upper level ridge builds over the area. Instead, low and mid
level southerly flow will help draw up moisture, which should mean
increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms by Thursday and
Friday.

New Mexico.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A Red Flag Warning is in effect between 2 PM and 8 PM today for the
Northwest Highlands where low humidities combined with strong winds
will create critical fire weather conditions. Any showers or storms
that develop today will produce gusty erratic winds but little to no
rain.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Potential for critical fire weather conditions will persist Monday
especially over portions of western New Mexico where a Fire Weather
Watch is in effect. Critical fire weather conditions are most likely
to impact eastern New Mexico on Tuesday.
