Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 316 AM MDT Sat Jun 6 2020 .SYNOPSIS... Light showers with a few embedded thunderstorms will continue through the morning hours before focusing across north central New Mexico by mid day. Additional showers and thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon just east of the central mountain chain. Strong south to southwest winds will be the rule area wide today, and any light precipitation may enhanced wind gusts through the afternoon. Widespread critical fire weather conditions are also likely along and west of the Rio Grande Valley due to low humidity values combined with the strong winds. Breezy to windy conditions are expected again on Sunday and Monday, with critical fire weather conditions likely across much of northern and central New Mexico. Otherwise, drier conditions will prevail after today, with temperatures slowly dropping back below normal through Tuesday. Thereafter, temperatures will start to bounce back above normal for the end of the work week. && .DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY)... Ongoing active weather with light showers and isolated short lived thunderstorms tracking rapidly northward over the CWA. Some nasty wind gusts associated with some of the convection, although suspect some of the gusts may also be related to the strong south wind profile detected by KABX with 45kts right off the surface although the wind has diminished in the closest 2K feet to the surface during the last hour. Have gone ahead and upgraded the high wind watch for portions of ne NM to a high wind warning, as well as painted a wind advisory for much of the north and west. Timing is an issue for the wind highlights as the stronger winds aloft pass overhead during the day, with some far western areas likely seeing the stronger winds earlier, and the central and northeast, midday and later. Models continue to indicate drier air will push into the far west later today with showers and storms becoming focused over the north central and along/east of the central mt chain this afternoon. Potential for gusty and erratic winds with any shower or storm also continues although the SPC Day 1 outlook clips north central NM with the marginal threat today. Sunday will be drier and cooler west and central but slightly warmer east due to southwest winds, which at this time are forecast to meet wind advisory criteria, over a good chunk of northeast NM. LONG TERM...(SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY)... A quiet night is expected Sunday night. Then, dry and breezy conditions will be the rule Monday and even Monday night as an upper level trough crosses the central/southern Rockies. An associated front will push through the state from northwest to southeast, likely increasing wind speeds along and directly behind it as it does so. Temperatures will drop below normal Monday across the west and all areas on Tuesday in the wake of the cold front. On Wednesday, the upper level high will begin building back over MX and TX, then further northward over NM on Thursday. Less wind will be expected overall, though weak southerly flow may draw up moisture from the south, potentially increasing shower and thunderstorm chances by late Thursday or Friday. The GFS also continues to advertise a back door cold front moving into the area late Thursday, though other models are lacking the intrusion. As always, it will depend on the position and strength of the high to see if and how much moisture is able to advect into NM. Stay tuned. 99/34 && .FIRE WEATHER... Showers and storms moving north over central and western NM at this time were producing some very gusty and erratic winds and only light amounts of rain. No changes to the red flag warning for today, as drier air is expected to overcome this mornings higher humidities by this afternoon and sustained winds rapidly increase. Dry lightning will be possible, as the drier air pushes into central NM later today and this evening, although humidities aren't quite low enough to trigger an expansion of today's red flag warning. Sunday into Monday will see widespread critical fire weather conditions as a broad upper trough swings through the central Rockies. NM will be on the southerly and windy and dry side both days, so went ahead and upgraded the Sunday watch to a Red Flag Warning. Also issued a Fire Weather Watch for Monday. High temperatures on Monday will be cooling however, and about 2 to 9 degrees below normal over the west and central, while remaining up to 10 degrees warmer than average east. The cooling trend continues Tuesday as a cold front drops into NM. Thereafter a warming trend occurs under a building ridge although a cold front late this week could spark a revival of showers and storms over eastern NM. && .AVIATION... 06Z TAF CYCLE Scattered showers and tstms will continue to track to the north over western and central NM through 15Z before shifting to north central NM and east of the central mt chain.
