Increasing winds along and increasing chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms across far western portions of the state this afternoon are forecast for today. Strong to very strong southwest winds will continue for many areas overnight rain and high mountains snow chances along with a few thunderstorms in northwest and north- central portions of the state. Cooler to colder condtions move in Sunday with moderate to strong winds continuing. Another storm system remains on track to move through western and northern New Mexico Monday with accumulating snow favoring areas above 6500 feet or so. Fall like weather is forecast for the remainder of next week with cooler temperatures and breezy condtions. && .DISCUSSION... .SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY)... A 541dam 500mb low, currently diving south along the central CA coast, will turn the corner today and progress east across the Great Basin and Desert Southwest as an open wave. This progression will bring strong winds aloft and a fetch of Pacific moisture into NM late today and overnight into Sunday morning as the upper level trough lifts northeast across the Four Corners and into CO and northern NM. PWATs are modeled to rise well above normal and when coupled with strong orographic forcing will result a quick, but significant round of precipitation. Snow levels will be relatively high with this wave, with valley rain and mountain snow initially followed by a brief change-over to snow early Sunday morning at locales such as Taos, Gallup and Grants. Persistent and moist southwest flow overnight will favor the Tusas Mountains, including Chama, picking up some solid snow ranging from 3 to 6" with higher amounts over the peaks. Will issue a Winter Weather Advisory for the Tusas Mountains including Chama for tonight into Sunday morning. Peaks in the Sangres and Jemez mountains may pick up a quick 3-6" as well, but are not expected to reach advisory threshold below 10K ft. The other part of this story is the wind, with 700mb winds forecast to increase to between 50-70kts out of the southwest overnight across the northern mountains and much of northeast NM. Given the unfavorable timing of the strongest winds aloft being in the middle of the night when atmospheric mixing is at a minimum and the overall lack of downward forcing, these strong winds should remain aloft and will likely only impact the higher terrain and Raton Pass. Will upgrade the Tusas and Sangre De Cristo Mountains, including Raton Pass and Johnson Mesa, to a High Wind Warning and surround those zones with a Wind Advisory. Otherwise, breezy to windy conditions are forecast across much of the area overnight into Sunday. Sunday will be 5-15 degrees colder behind the departing trough, with a second and colder upper low on approach from over the Great Basin. LONG TERM...(SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY)... Closed upper low over northern AZ and southern UT will likely begin to bring widespread rain with snow above about 5500-6000 feet or so across the northwest quarter of the state late Sunday night into Monday morning. Models consensus, however, is to open up the closed low into a progressive wave rather rapidly by late-day Monday. Snow levels are forecast to range from near 5K feet far northwest to around 6.5k feet in central areas. Accumulating snows will favor the west slopes of most mountain ranges in the northwest half or so of the state with the highest accumulations in the Chuska and Tusas mountains. A winter weather advisory will likely be necessary for these two areas late Sunday night into Monday. Much cooler, mostly dry and breezy weather is in store for Tuesday and Wednesday. It will certainly feel like the last month of meteorological fall. GFS and ECMWF are at odds with one another for late in the week. GFS brings a clipper type trough through northern NM Thursday while the ECMWF is farther south with a trough for late Friday into Friday night. Given the current phase of the MJO (phase 8 headed into phase 1), the ECMWF is the favored solution. 11/33 && .FIRE WEATHER... A cooling/moistening trend is in play through Monday as two consecutive upper level troughs/lows impact the state. In addition to good chances for wetting precipitation including accumulating snow in the mountains, both troughs will bring strong winds to the state. However, humidity is not forecast to reach critical threshold. Temperatures will trend below to well below normal over the next couple of days and are forecast to remain at or below normal thereafter. Another trough may bring strong winds back to the area on Thursday, with at least some potential for an hour or two of critical fire weather conditions across the highlands and portions of the plains. 11 && .AVIATION... 06Z TAF CYCLE A few moderate breezes may be periodically observed overnight (mainly in western and central New Mexico). Low level moisture will attempt to increase in southeastern New Mexico, but it is appearing unlikely that many low stratus clouds will impact the forecast area. Rather, copious mid to high clouds will continue to move overhead, and by late Saturday morning winds will be increasing more with rain and high mountain snow showers taking shape late in the afternoon and evening over western to northern parts of the state. A few thunderstorms may also develop in these areas. Cold air overnight will change rain to snow above 7,000 feet where a few inches are likely, especially across northern New Mexico. Strong south to southwest winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected with this system, especially in higher mountain locations. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday The next storm system will move in from the west Sunday night with more rain and mountain snow through Monday. Snow levels will be lower with this system so a few inches of snow are possible for a larger portion of the northwest half or so of the state. Strong southwest to west winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are possible again with this system. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT... Spotter activation is not anticipated. 33
