Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 315 AM MDT Mon Jun 8 2020 .SYNOPSIS... Slightly cooler temperatures are expected today, but strong winds and dry air will remain. Windy conditions are expected late this afternoon through tonight as a strong cold front pushes from northwest to southeast. Gusts between 50 and 60 mph will be possible for much of the area. Critical fire weather conditions will also return area wide thanks to very low humidity. Smoke impacts will be possible again overnight. On Tuesday, breezy to windy conditions will continue, but temperatures will be cooler still. In fact, high temperatures will be 5 to 15 degrees below normal for most areas. Winds will finally relax for Wednesday through the end of the work week, however, precipitation chances will trend upward Thursday through the weekend. && .DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY)... A very active weather pattern is setting up for today through Tuesday as an abnormally cold troughing pattern moves through the western CONUS. H5 temperatures within the core of the trough are coming in ~2-3 std devs below the norm at -20C to -27C through the Great Basin area. With active fires going on throughout the region, the main concern will be with strong southwest winds increasing mid- to-late morning through New Mexico today. Peak winds this afternoon will be in the 20-30kt range out of the southwest, however the strongest winds will accompany a Pacific cold front moving through during the evening period. A sharp pressure gradient of ~15-20mb stretching across the forecast area will support high winds of 30- 40kts spilling over the continental divide into the middle RGV, peaking near the 9pm hour. These winds follow the front through the central mountain chain into the eastern plains Monday night into Tuesday morning. Wind advisories have been hoisted for parts of west- central NM, the central mountain chain, and the northeastern plains, while a High Wind Warning has been raised for the middle RGV this evening. Winds quickly subside, thankfully, behind the front through the western half of the state Tuesday morning as the trough closes off to a low lee of the Rockies. This leads to the backdoor frontal portion of this wind event, which will surge southward through the eastern plains late Tuesday. There are notable inconsistencies between numerical models concerning the speed of the exiting upper low into the Great Plains, affecting timing and strength of winds behind the backdoor front Tuesday into Tuesday evening. Therefore, will hold off on any wind highlights during this timeframe, but any that would be raised would likely focus along the TX border. Fire weather concerns remain a main concern through the entire short term period given strong winds, very dry conditions, and active fires (see Fire Weather Discussion). Elsewhere, some smoke has settled into the RGV this morning and is expected to dissipate through the early morning hours. However smoke plumes from fires in AZ are expected to restrengthen bringing more smoke into Catron and Socorro Counties later today into Tuesday morning, depicted by the HRRR. Temperatures fall sharply across the area for Tuesday behind the Pacific and backdoor cold fronts, well below normal. There is a slight chance for a some light precipitation to reach the Johnson/Bartlett Mesas with the backdoor cold front early Tuesday. LONG TERM...(TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY)... Winds relax Tuesday night. On Wednesday, 500 mb heights start to build over the area and this trend will continue on Thursday, thus temperatures will start to rise again. However, low level southerly flow will draw up Gulf moisture into south central and southeast NM by Thursday afternoon. A weak upper level disturbance is expected to spark at least a few showers and thunderstorms over the southern high terrain, though the GFS remains much more bullish with convection across east central and southeast NM where the moisture meets a weak back door front. Other models continue to lack any frontal intrusion. On Friday, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop as moisture continue to advect into NM underneath the upper high. Storms look to favor areas along and just east of the central mountain chain, though at least isolated activity is possible further west. Over the weekend, as the next Pacific low shifts inland, moisture will continue to be pulled northward into NM, and daily rounds of thunderstorm activity is expected. However, Saturday looks more robust than Sunday, as drier air will start to move into the area from the west as the Pacific system shifts eastward. 24/34 && .FIRE WEATHER... ...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS AGAIN TODAY AND TUESDAY... Widespread critical fire weather concerns will return again today, coinciding with strengthening southwest winds during the mid-to-late morning period. Winds this afternoon strengthen to the 25 to 35 mph range with peak gusts of 40 to 45 mph. Single-digit RHs with high Haines and strong winds will make any fires susceptible to rapid growth and spread. The strongest winds will actually accompany a Pacific cold front reaching the Northwest Plateau at or an hour before 6pm MDT this evening, spreading to the RGV by 9pm MDT, and through most of the eastern plains by midnight. Gusts of 40-50 mph, peaking to 55-60 mph will accompany this fropa. Expect a W/NW wind shift with this frontal passage that will certainly keep fires active through overnight period for central and eastern NM. Thankfully winds through western NM will subside rather quickly once the front moves through toward the early morning hours. Much cooler and drier air fills in behind the Pacific front for Tuesday. So despite a significant drop in temperatures to below normal, MinRHs will still be critical with single-digit RHs through the lower Rio Grande and Pecos River Valleys. Elevated NW winds linger Tuesday as the storm system responsible for the winds exits into the Great Plains, keeping critical fire weather concerns going through parts of central and east-central NM where a Fire Weather Watch has been raised. After Tuesday, temperatures warm with a building ridge, winds calm, and precipitation chances stay low until the end of the week. 24 && .AVIATION... 06Z TAF CYCLE Winds are settling down and with it some smoke from fires in southwest NM and AZ. This has brought some slightly lower vis at KABQ to 6SM. HRRR smoke models are indicating the smoke will continue to settle into parts of the RGV from KSAF to KABQ, and near KLVS over the next few hours before dissipating later toward sunrise thanks to the source plume losing its strength. Will include TEMPO groups mentioning slight reductions in vis with only KABQ and KAEG showing MVFR vis at 5SM through 10Z. TAF amds may be necessary to remove this if it doesn't persist that long. The main story for Monday remains very strong southwest winds increasing during the mid to late morning, lasting through the afternoon, and peaking during the evening hours with a fropa. Late this afternoon and evening, a strong cold front will blast from northwest to southeast. Another burst of strong to potentially damaging winds is expected along and behind the cold front for one to three hours. Wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph will be common. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday Critical fire weather conditions may return Tuesday for the Sandia, Manzano and Gallinas Mountains eastward to the Texas border due to strong winds and low humidity. Winds will be strongest across northeast New Mexico where gusts near 50 mph will be possible. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
