Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 805 PM PST Sun Nov 24 2019 .SYNOPSIS...Tranquil weather across the region will come to an end Monday as a fast moving dry cold front sweeps across southern Nevada and surrounding areas bringing gusty north winds. An unusually cold and expansive storm for late November will then bring deteriorating weather conditions across the western states late Tuesday through the Thanksgiving Holiday. Expect difficult travel conditions from Wednesday through at least Friday. && .UPDATE...No changes to the overnight forecast. Other than a few high level clouds in Lincoln County, clear skies will persist across the area. Low temperatures will be about the same as last nights lows. && .PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...305 PM PST Sun Nov 24 2019 .DISCUSSION...The much discussed Thanksgiving storm is still shaping up to impact our region beginning over the southern Sierra and Inyo County Tuesday night. The leading edge of the system will then spread across the rest of the forecast area Wednesday and Wednesday night then the broad core of the system will slowly churn over the area through early Friday leading to unusually low snow levels for late November. The main impacts will be related to the potential for snow to make travel difficult across a wide area. Prior to its arrival, the cold shortwave that was near the Pacific Northwest this afternoon will dive across southern Nevada Monday morning through early afternoon ushering in gusty northwest to north winds. The strongest winds with gusts over 40 mph are expected to occur across Inyo County and nearby Esmeralda, central/southern Nye and western Clark counties and northern San Bernardino County. A Wind Advisory is in effect from 10 AM until 7 PM PST Monday for these areas. The winds will become light Tuesday while colder air settles over our region waiting for the arrival of the broad closed low spinning up and expanding over the western states Tuesday night and Wednesday. While this system will have widespread significant impacts, especially to travel, the latest models have continued to indicate a more inland trajectory which has lead to a modest reduction in expected precip amounts, especially across the valleys and deserts. Moisture will be somewhat limited as it no longer appears that it will tap into any of the abundant moisture near Baja California. Instead, it will bring its own plume along the leading edge Tuesday night through Wednesday then we will likely see some breaks in precip behind the initial baroclinic band. However, cold air instability and orographic enhancement will still probably produce significant snow amounts in the mountains above 6000 feet. Snow levels will likely lower to near or below 3000 feet Thursday and Thursday night across the Mojave Desert zones. This could produce significant snow near Mountain Pass on I-15 and there may be potential for snow showers in the Virgin River Gorge Thursday night and Friday morning. I-40 east of Kingman will likely be impacted with snow near the eastern Mohave County border as well. The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for zones north of Las Vegas but may need to be expanded further over the Mojave Desert if trends continue to favor low snow levels with sufficient snow accumulations. The system will be exiting to the east late Friday through Saturday. Yet another Pacific System is indicated by the medium range models to approach the California Coast next Sunday. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Light winds, clear skies, VFR conditions expected into Monday. By Monday afternoon, a cold front will slide through the valley, with north to northwest winds starting sometime around 21Z-23Z. Gusts should quickly subside overnight Monday night, but a northwest wind around 12 kts may persist. A few clouds can be expected with a front, but no ceilings are expected, especially not any below 15 Kft. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...The main concern for the next 24 hours is a cold front sliding south across the region. Gusty north winds are first expected at KBIH, gradually working south across the area. Areas north of KLAS will have light and variable winds ahead of the cold front, whereas areas south, such as KDAG and KEED will pick up with westerly and southerly winds respectively ahead of the front. A few clouds with bases AOA 15 Kft are possible along and behind the front. && .FIRE WEATHER...Gusty north winds will develop across southern Nevada and southeast California Monday. Critical fire weather conditions will be most prevalent in the Owens Valley where dry fuels, gusty north winds 40 to 50 mph and relative humidity values around 15 percent can be expected.
